Obviously, you're the Brit, so I defer to your wisdom on this one, but I would think that the Candian-born-and-raised son of an Englishman might consider himself English, but would be less likely to consider himself British. "English" suggests an ethnicity, whereas "British" would really be more of a nationality. Granted, I haven't really been paying attention, but I don't think I've ever heard any Americans of English or Scottish or Welsh or Northern Irish descent describe themselves as "British," though they may use one of the former terms when talking about their background. Am I far off the mark here?
