Jimmy Smith has been my favorite player for going on a decade now. The way he talked in the off-season, I expected this upcoming year to be his final season anyway. Still, a bit of a shocker, as it sounded like he was ready to give it a go this season.

As for the Hall of Fame, he's got the numbers, but two things are lacking: he hasn't played in a Super Bowl (he does have a ring from when Dallas won and he was on IR), which I think is an overrated "qualification" for getting into the HOF, and he doesn't have many TD catches. I really hope he gets in though.

From the article:

He has more receptions than every receiver in the Hall of Fame, and only Marvin Harrison has had more catches and yards receiving than Smith since 1996.

If having more receptions doesnt get him in, nothing will.

It hasn't seemed to work for Art Monk yet.

After watching Merril Hoge and James Hasty discuss it on NFL Live, I can definitely understand why Jimmy probably won't be in the Hall of Fame.

To steal criteria from Bill Simmons, this is one of those cases where numbers kind of lie. I don't think there's any time where people said "Wow, Jimmy Smith! I have to buy a ticket to see him in town!" If you asked people, even knowledgable football fans, to name the best or even the most valued receivers in the league during Smith's time, I doubt his name would crack any higher than the top five.

He's very good, but he ain't Hall.

You say numbers lie, I say underrated. He made the Pro Bowl four or five times and is second to Marvin Harrison in receptions and yards over the past ten years. Just because he doesn't act out like Chad Johnson or T.O or live in a pass-based offense like Marvin Harrison, so he doesn't get the pub, doesn't mean he wasn't highly valued.

Plus, playing in a market like Jacksonville won't get you recognized too often.

All I know is I always picked him up in Fantasy Football in the later rounds and LOVED his production.
