That's quite good for a fan-made ad. However, just watching that ad makes me kind of pull away from wanting to buy it. Who the hell wants to do motions even close to that over and over during a game?

Sorry, but I owned the Power Glove. There's a reason it didn't work. I don't care how much innovation they throw into this, this is going to be a hard sell to all but the most devoted Nintendo fans.

So while I understand you think the name is gay, no it isn't going to hurt sales.

Since when did anyone say that the name "Wii" or that Nintendo users are homosexual? Or Pikachu for that matter. I haven't watched much Pokemon, but my girlfriend assures me that there is not any homosexuality (or sexuality in general) in the show/game.

Your post, and general obsession on homosexuality, really confused me.

Let me catch you up a bit on popular slang term used these days. Hopefully it will help explain the situation. See, for quite a while now the kids have been using "gay" to refer to things they believe are "stupid".

Earlier some people were basically saying the Wii name was stupid, or in the above slang "gay". Why I chose to use gay instead of stupid....I dunno. Maybe I'm just more hip than you, old man.

So yeah, making fun of you out of the way, those were examples of horrible, stupid names that didn't seem to hurt anything sales wise.

Psst. You're older than me. I guess that makes you "gay?"

In any event, it seems kind of insulting that you would use gay as a synonym for stupid. What if you started using "African" to mean retarded? Don't you think people might start to question your word choices?

I'm just trying to tell you that if you're going to grab your slang from "kids" as you say and resort to referring to gay people as stupid, you will invalidate your whole argument.

Personally, I think Wii is a stupid name. The Revolution was a good enough name for me. I'm with guru on how a name can effect the product. Would you buy the new Dodge Daisy? Ford Lavender? No, you want something that conveys a sense of power that is in the truck. Dodge Magnum. Dodge Durango. I NEVER told people I posted at the Wienerboard/ville.

There are a few factors keeping me from buying two new systems. More and more I am looking to put a PS3 next to my 360 and not a Wii. The name is far down the list, but it is on there. Really, I think the controller made the choice for me. I'm a huge Madden/NCAA fan and I don't want to have to have to swing the controller around like Bruce Lee to play the game.

If I want that kind of activity, I'll plug in my mats and challenge my girl friend to some more DDR.

First, on the whole "gay" thing....get over yourself. It's a slang term pretty much used everywhere(do you watch any popular tv show???) and has been for years now. I don't in any way equate it to homosexuality when used in that context and trying to say it invalidates the whole arguement is just plain silly. It's not like I go around in my day job telling my co-workers things are gay. There's a time and place for it, like many, many words and somehow as much as I like this board I don't find the setting formal enough to watch my words. Also I knew I was older by a bit, it's called a joke.

Second, I think you and others are acting like old codgers with this Wii thing. It's a name and I think it's incredibly petty to say you won't buy it no matter what based on said name. I think the only people that believe that are the ones who likely wouldn't have bought it anyway. And this not wanting to move around is all fine and good, but I think a lot of people are going to enjoy it. Perhaps people that don't enjoy sitting there like a lump? Perhaps a new market of people that OMG Nintendo is purposfully going after? Nawwww, couldn't be.

Overall, just chill. About the gay thing and about the Wii thing. Neither one means jack.

You probably don't want to click here, then ...

As for the name, I think that the comparison to this very message board's original "Wiener"-ized name is a fabulous example; as much fun and innovation the system (potentially) has to deliver, it's going to be very hard for some people to stop by their local Best Buy and asking "Could I have a Wii, please?"

Seriously, if people are (still) bothered by it so much, then you can always call it the "NW" (Nintendo Wii) ... just because Nintendo says that there's no need to abbreviate, doesn't mean that you can't.

Or, if you're one of the more deluded members of the Nintendo fanboy community, you can just keep on believing that the whole thing is just a hoax and the REALLY REAL name will be revealed at E3 (just one more day to go!) ...

I didn't see these pictures (infendo.com) with the Time article above, but allegedly they were scanned in from the print version. Screenshots of Twilight Princess, Rayman, Red Steel (the Yakuza game), and Tennis. The way the hands are animated for the sword in Red Steel give a good idea about how you'll be swinging that around.

Also, I don't know how much credibility to put in this, but allegedly, the controller will have a speaker built in (lakituslair.com). That sounds silly, but as the article pointed out, if you're playing a shooter, the controller can make gun sounds when you pull the trigger, which sounds like it could be a fun feature.

Also, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the Wii, among other things... (gamespot.com).

This week is going to be crazy.

Nintendo has grasped two important notions that have eluded its competitors. The first is, Don't listen to your customers ... That's a bit of a controversial statement, isn't it?

Oh, and I don't like the fact that "Animal Crossing" has been retroactively labeled as being "designed for girls"; that just makes me ... uncomfortable.

Out of its context, yes. In context, the point was that due to the state of the industry, Nintendo feels it's important to try to rope in a much broader base than the current hardcore gaming community. Which makes sense, if you think about it, especially since they're third right now for hardware in a market that hasn't really expanded beyond that base in quite a few years.

I still stand by my opinion that "Wii" is an awful name (and don't know if it'll be as marketable to the American public as they're thinking it is), but as one of those that aren't part of the gaming community, their approach makes sense to me.

Rumours are now starting to float around that the console will cost $250 (engadget.com). I had heard $200 previously, but I would think that as we're closer to the announcement, these later rumours will probably pan out. Besides, Sony has certainly given Nintendo plenty of room to raise the price and still be the cheapest console on the block.

Watching the E3 conference now. Two things that have me even more excited...

1. The left hand joystick attatchment is also motion sensitive so you have two thing to swing around. Very cool.

2. There is a speaker on the remote. Example of it's use was you launch an arrow, you hear the bowstring pulled back on the remote and as you let go the sound moves from the remote to your front speakers. That's kinda cool.

Zelda at launch likely means no Mario at launch (which looked amazing), so that sucks, but for as primitive as the graphics on Wii Sports looked, I bet they'll sell at a 1:1 ratio with the system.

And TWENTY SEVEN games playable now? Regardless of whether they're released on launch day or launch window, that's pretty astounding, especially for a company that used to launch with three or four games.

Did they not talk about the Virtual Console? The Gamespot feed kept coming in and out, so I must have missed it.

edit: thought it was 27 games at launch, not playable at E3...

They didn't really touch on Virtual Console too much. They did, however, talk about the WiiConnect, which is that your Wii connection is always on, even when the machine is off, so that developers could push out updates or friends can leave messages while you're sleeping or whatever.

Before E3 began, I was on the fence as to what I would get to complement my 360, but there's not even a competition now. With the absurd price of the PS3 combined with that lame Wii controller mechanics ripoff, there's no question that I'll be getting the Wii.

And oh, man, Super Mario Galaxy looked OUTSTANDING.

From engadget and joystiq's coverage of the event (engadget.com), Reggie Fils-Aime, on the name 'Wii': "Okay, the name ... we want to thank everyone that had good things to say about it ... both of you."

Interesting that the commentator noted that the graphics are sub-par compared to the PS3 and 360, but that's what Nintendo's been saying. I don't think anything truly surprising came out of this press conference, although he did mention the console would be available Q4 2006. That would suggest a November-ish launch, right, or could he possibly mean June (isn't that the fiscal Q4?) I should stop trying to get my hopes up, right?

I think in the past they have said we would be playing it by Thanksgiving so I would guess November. Launching a week before PS3 would be the smartest move if possible, especially with Zelda being there for it.

Also nice to hear it will include the Opera web browser, as that's something I really wish the 360 had.

The graphics were not a big leap above current gen, but then again that's the route Sony tried and they didn't impress anyone. It's about the gameplay here and watching the demo people play it I think it was very impressive. Lots of new possiblities I didn't think of with that joystick attachment being motion sensitive too.

At this point, no way am I missing out on this system.

edit - http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2006/wii/img_con/photo_classic.jpg

That one is a picture of the controller attachment that is more like a standard one.

http://wii.nintendo.com/home.html

If you click on Hardware and scroll you can get the first look I've seen at the sensor bar that detects the motion. I think it's the thing lying on the ground in front of the tv there.
