So, the Revolution finally has a real name (revolution.nintendo.com). The Nintendo Wii. As a self-proclaimed fanboy, there's really nothing I can say about that...

Of note, there are more details on the capabilities of the console (gamasutra.com), such as what type of media it will play and DVD add on capability, as well as an interview pertaining to Madden on the Wii (gamasutra.com). That sounds REALLY fun, being able to mimic throwing the ball and stiff arming defenders. I'm still hyped about this, and will get one when it comes out, even if I still keep calling it the Revolution.

Wii????

I'm too lazy to google it, but I distinctly remember reading that most of the Nintendo first party games from the NES to N64 will be available for download at a fee, much like a game you could download onto your phone. I've also heard rumor of many Sega games, Altered Beast, Sonic, and Phantasy Star as example, also being available upon system launch.

They do a pretty good job of explaining their philosophy on the name, but that doesn't really change the fact that it's a dumb name. Still gonna buy it, though.

On one hand, the name is really cool and unique.

On the other hand, I can't stop making fun of it.

I'll likely buy one regardless.

And all kindergartners around the world rejoice at the new Nintendo system now having a name that's very, very easy to make childish jokes about.

Also, I wonder if the team responsible for putting together that ad used to work at Pixar.

I think it's absolutely awesome. Love the philosophy, love the name. It's so much cooler and modern than "play station" or "x-box," which actually sound outdated now that I think about it. And just think - a few years ago, people said "what the hell's an iPod?!?" and now it's a household name even old people know. Wii has that same potential.
I guess based on the coolness of this, the old game library, the controller and other factors, THIS will be the first system out of the next gen consoles I buy.

I wanted to get this too but I refuse to believe this name isn't going to hurt sales which will hurt the amount of good games available. I mean really, its just TOO stupid a name. It sounds like something the Nuni family on SNL would buy.

Though a bit trite, I prefer the name "Revolution" for the system.

What's particularly confusing is that the "Revolution" moniker, much moreso than the "Dolphin" name they had given the Game Cube in its infancy, has established a good amount of brand-name recognition given all the media coverage it received and the buzz surrounding the system. Granted, they have time to sway consumers into making "Wii" more recognizable, but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.

That, and like everyone's pointing out, it's a really dumb name.

I don't care about the name; most console names are silly and pretentious. I'm just really amused at many gamers on the Internet going bonkers over a name.

Now if the Wii ignites a fire three minutes upon booting up and running or another major defect occurs, then I'll join the outrage.

As a Nintendo fan, I find myself constantly having to apologize for Nintendo's choices. It starts to drag on you after a while, and when you see them make a decision that is OBVIOUSLY going to cause you grief, it upsets you.

Forget apologizing on this. Admit that its a dumb name. But also admit that even if they called the console "Double Trouble Crap on a Stick", that it'd still be awesome and totally worth owning.

In other news, rumours are surfacing that the Wii will cost $199 and be available as early as July (the-mole.org). There's also speculation that Nintendo is sitting on a warehouse of these and is going to pull an Apple by announcing the console at E3 only to admit that it is now available. I don't know how important the pre-order market is to console releases to know if this is viable beyond mere speculation.

I like the name. Yeah, I said it.

I can't believe how much kvetching is going on over a product name. One of the other boards I visit is fixated on the word "wee"-it being "slang" for urine, which would make sense, if I were six years old.

Don't look at the name out of context. Look at it with the console, and the controller. Everything they've shown, from the small size, to the intuitiveness and familiarity of the remote control-style controller, to the soft curves in the logo, to the Pixar-ish bouncing "i"s. It's completely gender neutral-compared to sames such as Genesis/Mega Drive, TurboExpress, Jaguar, NEO GEO, Super Nintendo, Playstation and XBox. I've seen comparison to the iPod name, which makes perfect sense, because the iPod name is safe, simple, and nonthreatening. Do you think it would have sold as well if it were the Apple Extreme Power Music Box?

Plus, going by the launch website, it seems like they're looking for a gaming experience that is not solely focused on the single player, but in a social/family setting. When I got a NES as a kid, it was in the family room, and playing it was a family event. Mom played Super Mario, Tetris and Dr. Mario, my father played Golf and Tecmo Bowl-but we played the games together.

But as the controllers got bigger, and the buttons increased, and the games got more complex, my mother's interest waned, and my father-with the sole exception of his Madden obsession-doesn't play anymore either. But my mother just bought a GameBoy (another non-aggressive name), and she's intrigued by the Wii.

I'm no Nintendo fanboy, but I *am* patient enough to see how they market the thing before I jump on the "doom and gloom" bandwagon that seems to circle around Nintendo. After all, people hated the Playstation name, and we see how much that hurt their business.

As one of my sources put it: “they could have those things in a warehouse somewhere ready to roll”. I know that sounds crazy, but Apple does that a few times a year, so it’s not that crazy is it?

I hope launching at E3 is as successful for the Wii as it was for the Sega Saturn!

Well no, but that's kind of apples and oranges, no pun intended. iPod isn't slang (juvenile or not) for anything. I'll ask this...do you think it would have sold as well if they had named it iDong or Phallicus 2000?

I just think that there was some lack of common sense here.

They can hope it won't have any affect on sales, but I think that's wishful thinking. If I wanted to name my child Gay because it was a family name I could HOPE it wouldn't guarantee him ass beatings on the playground, but again that would probably be wishful thinking.

This article (wiredblogs.tripod.com) makes a similar point to yours. It would seem the main problem, causing all of the 'kvetching', is that the name isn't directed at the hardcore-internet-fanboy types. Its meant to get parents and non-gamers interested. Unfortunately, those people aren't the ones paying attention to the announcement, and they certainly aren't the ones leaving posts in forums about the name. Sure there will be some kids who make fun of it, but by the time all is said and done, the system will sink or swim based on the gameplay. Either everyone is going to fawn over at the ability to 'swing a sword' or 'throw a ball' and this will be the biggest system since the NES, or they are going to yawn and ignore it and this will be remembered as another Virtua Boy.

Based on what I've read about Madden for Wii, i think the bigger potential disappointment will be that you probably *won't* be "swinging a sword" or "throwing a ball", at least not in the traditional sense. It sounds like it will be more of flicking your wrist forward to make a pass*, rather than mimicking throwing a football. And since that's what everyone been harping on since the controller was announced, that could be the next potential bump in the road for the Nintendo Marketing Team.

edit: Here's a link discussing Madden (gamespot.com).

While many details will have to wait until E3 kicks off, GameSpot was given an advanced scouting report which said that the gameplay will make extensive use of the Revolution controller's motion-sensing capabilities.

Players will hike the ball by mimicking a quarterback receiving the ball from the center, and then pass it to a receiver by making a throwing gesture with the free-hand controller. The faster the passing motion, the more of a bullet pass it becomes (in previous Madden editions, bullet passes were made by holding the passing button down longer).

Kicking the ball will be accomplished by sweeping the controller up as if it were a kicker's leg striking the ball. A fast, level swing will make for a hard, straight kick.

The Revolution controller will also come into play when running the ball, as jerking the controller left or right will make the ball-carrier juke to either side, while shoving it straight ahead will make him stiff-arm the opposition.

No, but I think that kids can make piss and dick jokes from anything. I remember several photoshop floating around depicting a product called the "iPoo", after all.

Honestly, when I first read the name, urine was the last thing I thought of. I first thought of "WHEE", as in the exhilarating sound a child makes when he's having the time of his life. And then I thought of "we" as a community. And really, if this name is part of some grand online plan (WiiFii?), then the name will certainly make more sense than "XBox 360".

Also, the "ii" in the "Wii" logo look suspiciously like controllers. I hope this means they're packing two in the box. They won't, but they should.
