"Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has two fractured bones in his left wrist, team general manager Jim Hendry said Thursday.

Lee will be in a cast for 6 weeks and likely will face 2-4 weeks of rehab after that, meaning the Cubs will be without one of their best hitters for 8-10 weeks."

Well not quite eliminated, but even when he comes back you can almost bet something else will go wrong. Being a Cards fan, part of me is laughing. Hard. That part is on the outside. But inside, I feel some sort of pity for the poor Cubs fans. Either that or it's indigestion from eating Dominos. I'm not sure.

There are teams that can't catch a break. And then there are the Cubs who let the break go through the glove, smashing their nose, breaking an eyesocket and ruining yet another season.

As a Cub fan, part of me is laughing, hard, on the outside as well. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Don't feel pity for us, though. We love this team for some unknown reason, without regard to the fact that the Trib makes a ton of money whether we win or lose.

When I saw the injury on Sportscenter yesterday morning they were calling it a sprained wrist. I looked at my girlfriend and told her that being a Cubs fan requires a lot of patience. She told me that it could have been a lot worse...the wrist could have been broken. I told her that with me being a Cubs fan for as long as I have that it would not surprise me if the injury turned out worse than what they said it was.

I hate being right.

What it's like to be a Cubs fan - My Story

The first time I was ever able to visit Wrigley Field was for Opening Day in 1983. Mel Hall was the current "next great Cub", having played reasonably well in limited action at the end of 1982. As I passed through the turnstiles behind home plate, a light rain began -- the game was ultimately rained out without ever beginning. I wasn't able to get back for my first game for another few years.

While waiting for the game to begin, however, I overheard the following conversation, which (in my opinion), is the best statement ever on what it's like to be a fan of the Cubs.

Guy #1 - What do you think of the Cubs' chances this year?

Guy #2 - Well, if Mel Hall has a bad year, they'll probably finish 5th. BUT, if Mel Hall has GREAT year ... they'll probably finish 5th.

At least Cubs fans love their team no matter what. How must it be to be a Royals fan and know you are mathematically eliminated in mid-April.

I still haven't figured out how the Royals won back-to-back games against the White Sox opening week.

They caught us basking in the pride of those new flashy championship rings. We made up for it though.

As for the Cubs fans...nah, I won't do it.

Oh, say what you want. Cause if you're a White Sox fan this year, you probably won't be one next year. Unless you're one of the 62 guys living between 31st and 33rd on Halstead. You're due for another 30 or so years of being ignored.

Cubs teams are a lot of things, but never ignored.

Mel Hall, what a bad memory that is. Unless it's Corey Patterson, Jerome Walton, Jimmy Qualls, Brooks Kieschnick, Bobby Hill, Chad Meyers, and many more...

Wait this isn't even fun anymore. You post a thread about a huge injury, take a few digs at the Cubbies and rather than defend their team like all other fans would, they come on and go "yep, ya got us. We suck." Then they turn the thread into a trip down bad memory lane.

There is something disturbingly wrong with you people. Is it a symptom or is it the problem is my only question.

What do you want us to do? Our stud first baseman got his wrist broken by our big FA target in the offseason that spurned us for more years in LA-LA land. This kind of shit just doesn't happen to other teams.

*SIGH* Yes, you're probably right on both counts.

Did I ever post about the first time I watched a Cubs game on TV? Paul Popovich pinch hit, it was back in 1973.

I watched all through 1974, hoping that the pickup of Billy Grabarkewitz would help out for 1975. It didn't.

Ouch. Someone's bitter about the way the last few year have gone

I don't like seeing Lee injured, as I enjoy baseball and Lee is a hell of player to watch. And honestly, I don't revel in the Cubs loss of their best player.

That said...hope you guys enjoy winning the Attendance Trophy this year. Let me know when the parade for that will be, It was nice last year that it didn't interfere with our World Series Champions parade. Thanks for the consideration.

Don't worry AWA...any team can have a bad century...or two.

Sox fans should know. Don't worry, you'll be back in shorts, build another ugly stadium and be ignored for another 40 years soon.

Sadly, not as difficult to figure is that as of this morning, those are the Royals' only two wins of the year.

Where have you gone, George Brett and Frank White?
