And the whole thing was really an unhappy accident:
- The home plate umpire's copy of the IL rulebook was missing the rule on the league's curfew, and the game should have been suspended at the end of the first inning to finish after 1 am.
- Failing the rulebook, the Pawtucket GM tried to call the league president, who himself was out until after 4 in the morning, and stumbled back home to find that two of his teams were still playing. Had he stayed out a couple of hours later, they could have just finished that game, and gone right into the scheduled game the next day, a day game for Easter Sunday.
Perhaps the best of all, according to the Rochester website? The scoreboard operator in Pawtucket, left his car headlights on...for 8 and a half hours. So, that was the treat that awaited him at quarter after 4 in the morning.
