"This years Diva Search, unlike in the past, will be held on both RAW and SmackDown."

At first i thought this made the news even worse, but i'm also sort of looking forward to some divas in DEAN's SD! comix.

Eh, we've already had it for two years now, I can't even really get upset by this news. I'm kinda used to them now.

Why? They've previously shit-canned the first winner, and the second winner (while I liked her during the contest) might as well be shit-canned. They have another $250,000 to throw away on another female who can't/won't wrestle, and will be gone within 18 months?

We all know the reason why. His name starts with a V.

Business wise, it makes sense. These bimbos fill roughly ten minutes each week, and they are likely paid far less than the rest of the roster - their benefit is exposure - so to speak.

It's an excuse to pretend they can tie a few storylines together, to bring out an old-timer for nostalgia purposes, and reset the crowd between real matches, making them seem all the more vicious.

Sure, I have tuned out for a few of these segments, but most of the time I leave it on and just do something else like work on my computer.

I don't like it, but I'm not going to necessarily overreact to it (since as Tenken347 pointed out it's come to be expected).

However, you bring up an interesting point...I believe WWE's line of reasoning is that it makes money in the sense that it creates some media attention, specifically having Hemme in Playboy. Hemme I would say was more successful than Ashley, and the former was released. Subsequently, I wonder if any small monetary gain is worth the investment of a quarter of a million dollars, especially when there's a good number of women on the indy scene they could pick up or models they could hire for a lot cheaper.

Both years they've done this it seems to me that the smarks hate it, the crowds boo the segments, and if I'm not mistaken they don't really pop a rating. So is the only rationale that it gets them some mainstream attention, and if so does that justify wasting time and money on this again?

I agree, Leyla was the hottest and she SHOULD HAVE won.

In general, the Diva Search does what it sets out to do: provide low brow T&A segments, provide a few new girls to look at and help sell their lucrative annual Diva Magazines and DVDs, get an annual Playboy cover and feature pictorial, generate interest from other media like FHM, Maxim, and the local papers the girls are from, and piss off a lot of workrate smarks.

I will never for the life of me understand why Christy was fired. Unless she was secretly stealing company profits and funneling them to North Korea, I just don't get it. Christy, who continually tried and improved a great deal in every respect (her matches with Melina pre-release were actually decent showings), was shitcanned, which doesn't bode that well for Ashley, although I suspect Ashley will hang around until they get a Playboy spread out of her. (And yes, she was already a Playboy Cyber Girl, but so was Candice before this year.)

Somehow, Maria might be the most successful out of all the Diva Search contestants. She's got an endearing character, she has an announcing gig that occasionally leads to (some bad) matches, and she's in OVW the rest of the week, getting some developmental cred.

The odds of getting another Trish out of the Diva Search are slim, and I think WWE knows it. Mickie James, Melina, and Jillian all came out of OVW and there are a few more girls that could be called up to wrestle. For the Diva Search girls, Christy had potential to wresle that was squashed. Ashley is abysmal, no matter how hard she WANTS to learn, she has displayed minimal athletic ability. It takes years to become a decent wrestler and Ashley might not hang around that long.

I think a few more Marias (and Kristals) could actually be the template they are looking for now: hot girls with some personality, wrestling ability is appreciated but not required, although a willingness to learn the business is. And there's nothing wrong with more characters in WWE, it's a television show after all. If they just came up with some decent segments as competitions every week that are actually entertaining, I think that would be a big help.

Actually, as I understand it the reason they keep doing these is that the call-in voting is all toll, and it's basically a license to print money. There's no additional overhead for the segments, and they make more money than they do on normal add revenue.

Something no one has mentioned: Isn't the Diva Search usually one of the higher rated segments of RAW, too?

Actually, now that you put me on the spot, I don't remember where I heard that. I know I heard it from somewhere, I didn't just make it up, but I have no idea what my source is. I guess unless someone else has heard this, everyone should just forget I said anything.

Especially since, if memory serves, last year's Diva Search voting was exclusively online on wwe.com. This year's will probably be the same.
