| #1 Posted on 5.4.06 0726.19 Reposted on: 5.4.13 0726.55 | On today's "Today," Katie Couric announced she's leaving at the end of May sweeps to go to CBS' Evening News program.
This was probably the most uneventful announcement since EVERYONE (trades, news outlets) had this days before this morning's confirmation from Katie.
Who'll replace her? The big rumors have been Meredith Vieira leaving ABC (and possibly Millionaire -- she's got two years left on her contract, but if she stays she would not be the first news person to host a game show on a different network -- Hugh Downs' hosting of Concentration while newsing on ABC is one example), Campbell Brown and Natalie Morales. Anne Curry is also mentioned, but IMO she's a long shot.
I'm sorta rooting for Vieira to get the job, only if because that causes more turmoil in contracts and networks. Personally, though, I hope Campbell gets the job. Promote this thread! | | PeterStork

To nitpick, Millionaire is produced by Buena Vista (Disney) but does not air on ABC - it's syndicated. So much less of a conflict (granted that ABC doesn't want to air a primetime edition, but at this point, why would they?)

She's better as one of those smiling zombie celebrity interviewers or when she's interacting with co-hosts or wacky morning show guests.
Of course I'm sure the money is huge, and there have been rumblings that while NBC is worried about how her departure will affect ratings, people aren't going to miss her attitude and personality behind the scenes. | Matt Tracker

and she doesn't have to get up at 3AM, and she becomes the big dog and can choose a lot of her cohorts - maybe she's tired of Matt getting the "where in the world" gig. | ekedolphin

| #7 Posted on 5.4.06 1904.40 Reposted on: 5.4.13 1904.43 | I agree with AWARulz-- when you've got that kind of money and seriously don't have to work another day in your life if you don't wanna, take the job that best makes you happy. I may just think this because I've never had a $20 million salary before, but the difference between $13 and $20 million really isn't all that much-- either figure is more than enough to allow you to lead a comfortable life.
So I don't blame her for taking the lower-paying job on a rival network where she becomes the big dog and doesn't have to get up at 3 in the morning every day.
On the other hand, I don't care for Couric's interviewing style, as she seems to spend more time asking the questions than she allows her subjects to answer the damn things, and she's constantly using either leading questions or just plain stupid ones. Granted she's got star power, but trust me when I say the Today Show is going to be a better program without her.

To nitpick back: True that it is syndicated, but until the rights contract to ABC lapses, to me, it's an ABC product. I mean, if you're NBCUni, do you want Meredith to do those remotes at Disney or move it over to Universal Studios? Synergy, man, synergy. ;) | AWArulz

| #12 Posted on 6.4.06 1059.18 Reposted on: 6.4.13 1101.10 | According to this article (cnn.com), the ratings for the network news broadcasts were as followed:
NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 8.9 million viewers (6.3, 13). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 8.1 million viewers (5.7, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.7 million (5.3, 10).
That's 24.7 million viewers (if my math is correct). The closest cable competitor (if you really want to call it a news show) was The O'Reilly Factor, which regularly has 2.3 million viewers or so.
This website here (stateofthemedia.org) says that nightly news total viewers has declined since 1980, when 52.1 million people regularly watched network TV news.
So there has been a big drop. I'm not sure what the factors are, though. | DrDirt

The primary factor is that there are hundreds of channels to choose from, instead of just the three networks and PBS that you would have had in 1980. The ratings pie is just split in so many pieces now that natuarly network ratings for ANYTHING is much lower today than it was in 1980.
More recent declines can probably be traced to similar reasons, more options for news, with several 24 hour news channels joining CNN, the internet, and the popularity of talk radio. | The Thrill
