Nothing really groundbreaking here (sportsillustrated.cnn.com), but I found it pretty interesting in the fact that it garners some mainstream press for the Hall of Fame.

Great story.

I've gotta admit, though: with all the talk about how Bret would walk out if Shawn Michaels was present in the building, I can almost see them trying to pull something with Shawn for the sake of creating controversy.

Instead of that, why not just have Vince walk up and spit in Bret's face ...

I think its kinda dickish for Bret to threaten a walk-out if Shawn shows up, since they are inducting Eddie Guererro on the same night.

I think someone's misquoting.

It was Shawn Michaels who said he'd no-show if it ment Bret Hart would be there. Not Hart saying he'd be there only if Shawn wasn't.

Nobody's misquoting. From the SI interview: "I've made it pretty clear that I don't want to be around Shawn," said Hart, who also doesn't plan on speaking with wrestlers such as Terry Bollea (Hulk Hogan), Paul Levesque (Triple H) and Richard Fliehr (Ric Flair), with whom he's traded personal barbs in the past but whose presence he will tolerate for one night. "Shawn's different. If I even see Shawn I'll probably get back in the cab and you'll have your April Fool's. I won't have him around. I won't allow myself to be agitated by his presence. If I have to deal with that, I'd rather not even be there."

And from a Calgary Sun interview (found here: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2006/03/26/1506615.html): Hart's final request pertains to the man who cheated him out of the WWF title all those years ago in Montreal, Shawn Michaels.

The Hall of Fame would be the first time the two have come face to face since that match -- but not if the Hitman has anything to do with it.

"I've basically told them that if I see Shawn, I'll get back in a cab and go straight to the airport. They'll have to get him to do my induction speech. I just feel that there's too much anger for me. Too combustible."

After reading the HBK Autobiography, I find it hard to believe that Shawn and Bret have not already made amends. Shawn saw it as business and not personal and Bret seems to be leaning to the 'forgive and forget' with regards to Vince, so I would wager they both have spoken, or have at least talked through others to get thier points accross and bury the hatchet.

I was unaware that Vince had called him when he had his stroke. That's a very stand up move on his part.

Also, how great would it be to pull a suprise and have them announce while Bret is there, that Owen is going in the HOF as well.

Bret's problems with Shawn are far bigger than the Montreal incident though. There never would have been a Montreal incident if Bret didn't have problems with Shawn in the first place.

Speaking of mainstream press for the Hall of Fame inductions, today's Around the Horn winner, Jay Mariotti, used his face time to blast the fact that WWE has a Hall of Fame. "It's not real!," etc. etc. He made fun of the fact that the Fridge and Pete Rose are supposed to be inducted (are they? I haven't been following closely enough) and basically said it's all one big joke. Hmm, I always did prefer Woody Paige.

Are the Hollywood Walk-Of-Fame stars a big joke because they're just acting?

Also, Pete Rose went in two years ago. He was the first "celebrity inductee".

It's a shame that they just end the show with face time and only a quick reaction, because it really seemed like Reali wanted to rip him apart for that (for whatever reason...I don't think he's a wrestling fan or anything). He did get in the shot, though, that he wishes AtH got the kind of ratings that wrestling does.

It's amazing that sports writers like Mariotti can at times seem so informed, and in-depth with their analysis, and then when it comes to subjects such as pro wrestling or (especially) MMA their ignorance knows no bounds.

ESPN does have an agenda against Vince. A few examples are the hidden monday night wars between Raw and MNF, back when MNF's ratings were low. ESPN did all it could to quash the XFL, which I thought was a great idea (paying players for winning, etc). The Cowherd idiot comment, ESPN's own failed wrestling show.

But poker, figure skating, spelling and sawing wood are sports.

Two topics in one thread? this board is amazing.

Worse yet, those stars on the Walk of Fame are ALL bought and paid for - there's no voting involved.

The last time I saw Around The Horn (a month or so ago), he muted a guy for saying "WWF" instead of "WWE", so I kinda got the feeling he was a fan. Just because I doubt anyone else would care.

With all the press about Bret threatening to walk away at the sight of Shawn... doesn't this almost GUARANTEE that they'll be doing something together at WRESTLEMANIA?

What's CRZ's quote about if you see it on tv, then it's a work or some such something...

I think the WWE is going about their HOF the wrong way.

They should appoint a board of HOF voting members (comprised of maybe Vince, other Hall members, some wrestling journalists), announce the final 12 or so (like they do with the NFL) maybe a month beforehand, and then finally unveil the new inductees.

That way, the induction will seem more official, and the debate over who from the final 12 should be included will generate more interest from the fans...
