Have you ever accidentally given bad information to a stranger? For example, for some reason I was convinced that this Sunday was the shift to Daylight Savings, and I mentioned this to a few people. Unfortunately, while this would be true if I lived in Europe, in the US it is actually next week.

Now I feel like I should try to track down these people to let them know I was wrong.

I already switched my clocks today, too, before I realized I was wrong.

Now I'm considering leaving them ahead for a week so I don't have to do this two more times.

For things like this - unless it is something I am 100% sure of (i.e. I have something I can refer the person to), I usually qualify most information I give people by saying "but you might want to double check, just to be sure".

Nice little out, just in case...

And likewise, I tend not to just assume everything I'm told is true, either. If someone told me last night was daylight savings, I would prbably double check before setting my clocks.

Then again, I usually have no idea until the next morning, anyway.

I kind of assume that people over the age of 18 should be responsible enough to take care of themselves, regardless of who tells them what... although an apology for accidentally misleading might be a good idea.

Often, if I give directions somewhere, and I realize afterward that they're wrong...I feel really bad, but there's nothing I can do about it. I can only hope that those who asked will find someone else to point them in the right direction.

A lady asked me where the police station was the other day. I told her, to make a left, go two lights, and then make a right. I sent her to the library. Of course, I was on foot all afternoon after classes, and was waiting for her to pull up and yell at me.

I actually did this with my students last year. I forget the random info I gave them, but the class went off on a tangent (and seemed very interested), so I busted out some very wrong facts. So I then had to make the correction the next day. There would have been nothing worse had I not corrected them.

All I can do when I give people wrong info is hope that they understand I did it out of my general incompetence and not out of malice. The worst is when, like Oliver and Roy. pointed out, you give bad directions to someone and you can only hope that they ultimately get to their destination.

Guru, I'd advise you show up to work an hour early on Monday and feign confusion.
