One of the most overlooked QBs in the game. He should have been the starter last year. I hope he gets another shot.

I was disappointed when he was benched in favor of Palmer (even though Palmer turned out great), because Kitna was playing well at the time.

As a Lions fan, I am extremely happy to have him. Sure, I would've much rather had Brees, or even Culpepper. But last I checked, Kitna's name isn't Harrington, which can only be a good thing.

Over Carson Palmer? Who completed 68% of his passes for 3,800 yards and 32 touchdowns, with only 12 interceptions?

Wow. The Lions get Kitna. I can't wait to see the cycle repeat itself again in Detroit. Both have a strong mini-camp, both have a strong preseason. Millen and Marinelli both think Joey has a better chemistry with the offense and give him the start. Charles Rogers gets caught snorting a line of cocaine off a hooker's ass. Roy Williams gets hurt. Mike Williams bitches about being triple-teamed even though Corey Bradford is on the other side.

The Joey loses 3 of his first four, the braintrust finally lets Kitna play and before Kitna has enough time to gel with the first team offense, the Lions are 2-6. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

At least I can recognize the cycle beginning in March instead of early September now.

Yes.

Kitna has improved every year, and has never had a good team behind him. I don't think that Palmer was the big change that brought success last year, and I think that Kitna could have had similar numbers last season with the same supporting cast.

The guy has never had a team behind him, and he's done alright. Look at his last full season as a starter (2003) and then look at the team he was playinig with.

He's better than George, Collins, Bledsoe, Vinny... lots of guys who had a better shot at success than he has. I'd love to see him get a shot at the wide receivers that Detroit has assuming a) Charles Rogers isn't made out of glass b) they can avoid drug suspensions.

Killer Kowalski (local writer) was reporting on the radio morning show Drew and Mike (WRIF) this morning that Joey Harrington, according to the scuttlebutt coming out of Allen Park, isn't going to be in Detroit for more than the next few months, if that. He wants out, and with the cap structure, it would behoove the Lions to drop or trade him. Trade is unlikely since his contract is pretty cumbersome.

Brings up a few good possibilities. With Kitna signed, they have a serviceable QB that could lead the team for a year or two. Also, with the Saints getting Brees, the number two pick overall could be up for grabs to the highest bidder, and the Lions could easily trade up to grab one of the young up and comings QB's in the draft. This would allow them to develop this draft pick over time (read: a few seasons) without having to automatically drop him in as a starter too soon, like they did with Joey Ballgame.

I'm not going to debate the merits of Kitna, I think he's alright. Nothing spectacular, but alright.

However, there was a chance here for the Lions to GET spectacular. Drew Brees went to the Saints....the SAINTS!!!!!...on a one year option deal. It's basically a one-year tryout that'll hit the Saints' cap for 10 mil, and if he shows any fallout from injury or what have you, the Saints can drop him with no penalties. After one year. Now, Tony Ortiz (who is a local "in" guy with the Lions here in Detroit) has said the Lions had interest in Bree sbut balked. BALKED?!?! We haven't had a good quarterback, let alone a franchise one, since before the damn Super Bowl was around!!! Sure Brees may, *may*, end up with some issues rom his injury but the deal he has now with the Saints is not that overly pricey for a quarterback that could be a cornerstone of a franchise. At a key position that Lions fans have always griped about, and the Lions have needed. And he would've been on a one-year friggin' option that does not hurt the Lions should the injury show up again!!! Yet the Lions balked, and threw *11* mil at 33-year old Jon Kitna. Good lord I hate the Lions front office.

I happy for John to get a starting shot. He did really well for us, especially in helping to get Carson going. Good luck to him!

Perhaps the Lions would be better off drafting a defensive player in the first round of the draft one of these years rather than yet another offensive player. Then again, Millen probably would draft a punter in the first round and claim it was for defense.
As for Kitna: He's a serviceable quarterback. If he was special, he would have found a starting job in a league where Quincy Carter was able to start and where the Cardinals have rolled out stiff after stiff for over a decade. In terms of back-up quarterbacks historically, I wouldn't even put him on the level of a Don Strock.

And he's outta there!!! (sportsillustrated.cnn.com)

I can only wonder if, now that Harrington's available, the Eagles will complete their Detroit QB-controversy collectors set.

Well, not at the same time, as the Iggles have whacked McMahon and Andy Hall.
