See, that week, I didn't have ANY listing for South Park that night. Just a big ol' "To Be Announced" block in its place. Tonight, it actually says "Trapped in the Closet." And, Comedy Central's website is listing it, too. This, coupled with Trey and Matt on Letterman tonight makes me think we're going to see it.

Didn't they get in MORE trouble with their Catholic episode? Or did I just have to read more about those protests?

I remember reading this in Jan.

No Mea Culpa from Comedy Central

Comedy Central has contradicted boasts by conservative religious groups that they were responsible for pressuring the Viacom-owned cable network to yank an episode of South Park from its regular rotation. The episode, titled "Bloody Mary," which originally aired on Dec. 7, concerns the father of one of the South Park tykes who visits a statue of a bleeding Virgin Mary in the hope that it can cure him of his drinking habit. Protesters took their case to Viacom board member Joseph Califano, a former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, who called the episode "appalling and disgusting" and said that he would discuss it with Viacom chief Tom Freston. But on Monday, Comedy Central executives insisted that they had not yanked the episode, but had only removed it from the annual South Park marathon "in deference to the holidays." In a letter to viewers who expressed outrage that the channel had caved in to pressure, the executives said: "Despite misleading claims from those who would like to claim victory, we have not permanently shelved the 'Bloody Mary' episode from future airings due to outside pressure, nor will we exclude it from future DVD releases. ... As satirists, we believe that it is our First Amendment right to poke fun at any and all people, groups, organizations and religions and we will continue to defend that right."

According to wikipedia, the "Bloody Mary" episode caused QUITE a stir in New Zealand and Australia

In February 2006, leaders from the New Zealand Catholic Bishops' Conference, the Council of Christians and Muslims, and other religious groups together lobbied CanWest to stop a planned airing of the episode in New Zealand on the music channel C4. The network rejected the plea and said the episode would air as planned.[5][6] Leading Catholic bishops then called for a boycott of C4 and its sister network TV3. CanWest again resisted and decided to air the episode sooner than planned to take advantage of the media attention. New Zealand's Prime Minister Helen Clark issued a statement saying the episode sounded "revolting," but that the network was free to air it. One advertiser, who's a non-practising Catholic, withdrew his ads from CanWest's networks. Catholic group Family Life International set up a website for boycotting CanWest's other advertisers.[7][8] Another company named C4 Productions, which has no links to the C4 music channel, applied for a court order on the eve of the airing to stop the episode citing damage to its business because it thought people would link it to the channel. The judge ruled against the order.[9] C4 aired the episode on February 22, 2006 and drew 210,000 viewers, six times South Park's normal audience for the channel.[10]
In February 2006, Archbishop Denis Hart in Melbourne, Australia wrote to television network SBS asking them not to air the episode. The network's programming director originally rejected the request, but later decided to postpone the episode citing the controversy over the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons.[11]

My listing showed the 10:00pm spot was going to be "Trapped in the Closet" and instead we got Chef's big salty chocolate balls.

I don't have a source because I just heard it on the radio this morning, but supposedly Tom Cruise is more powerful than Isaac Hayes because he threatened to not advertise his new movie (MI-3) on Comedy Central if the Scientology episode aired. So CC cancelled the episode from airing. Or something like that. Anyone else hear anything like this?

Trapped in the Closet already aired at least once, according to TV.com, it was Wednesday November 16, 2005.

Do you guys not realize the irony of this situation? After all the controversy and all the outcry years ago...look who ended up censoring South Park.

It wasn't George W. Bush.

It wasn't the government.

It wasn't even the FCC.

It was fucking Maverick.

Well he hurt them, but I wouldn't call it censoring. I would imagine those guys will now create an episode ripping on everyone involved pretty heavily in repsonse to this.

Through his actions, Tom Cruise forced repeats of the episode to be pulled and banned in England. Seems like censorship to me.

That would not suprrise me. Especially after reading this in Flea's linked article...

Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! My hope is that Parker and Stone clearly respond to this bullshit in future episodes and take no f'n prisoners. If there was ever a time for South Park to address a topic it would be this one.

The topic that after 10 years of being on the air, Republicans and the government had nothing to do with their content being pulled off the air. It was all because of a humorless Hollywood diva movie star.

I can't believe this didn't occur to me until today.

Why didn't Hayes quit when the episode was made? Or when the episode aired? Why did he wait until right before the new season starts? This whole thing is nothing more than free publicity for the new season of South Park and now, with Cruise's *involvement*, MI-3. I'm sure that when Parker and Stone released the Scientology episode, they knew that Hayes would have to leave. I'd be surprised if they didn't do that episode with his blessing, given Chef's diminishing role. We're all being worked. This is all the scheme of the Viacom marketing department.

Was Chef even in the Scientology episode? I'm sure they don't run every script past Hayes if he's not involved in it. Besides, if it's the cult's higher-ups flinging around the orders, then when Hayes comes out and says it is really a moot point as it wasn't fully his decision in the first place.

He's not listed in the credits for that episode. All the others I saw featured him.

And lo and behold, the season premiere of South Park this Wednesday will be titled "The Return of Chef", sans Hayes, of course (zap2it.com).

Oldschoolhero, I'm not saying that they ran the script past Hayes, but given his diminishing role, they probably at least warned him the episode was coming. I'd think all involved would know that even if Hayes personally was cool with the episode, his superiors wouldn't be and he would have to leave the show. To that extent, I think there's no real controversy here other than the timing of Hayes' quitting comes right before the new season starts. Then some Viacom PR guy gets the idea to use the Trapped in a Closet episode to generate interest in South Park and MI-3, and there's much ado about nothing. Regardless, I'm sure the SP episodes about all of this will kick ass.
