Sergei Samsonov traded to Edmonton for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and a 2nd round pick.

Hell yeah Mike O'Connell, way to go! That's 2 trades this year where you've sent your most talented players out of town for about a 20% return. Seriously, did Harry Sinden think you were trading for Peter Stastny and this was 1982? I'm now doing to the Bruins what I did to WWE back in October - moving on and not looking back.

Samsanov will be a free agent after this season and had made it clear he was not resigning.

Anything they could have gotten for him is better than losing him for nothing after the season.

I know all of that. Mike O'Connell himself said in the AP article

"Part of it was the uncertainty of not being able to sign him," O'Connell said, adding that he did not attempt to negotiate an extension for Samsonov. "If it comes to the summer and he wants to come back, we'll listen. ... I wasn't sure of which way he wanted to go."

But like the Thornton trade I'm left with the impression the Bruins took the first deal that came their way. If they're throwing in the towel to start over, that's one thing. However, when Mike O'Connell also says in the same article

"We still want to give ourselves a chance to get in the playoffs," general manager Mike O'Connell said. "I think we've done that."

I can't bring myself to think that Marty Reasoner and Yan Stastny are better for the Bruins to have a chance at the playoffs than Sergei Samsonov. If someone else wants to explain it to me, go ahead, I'm listening.

Yeah, a/k/a the normal way Bruins ownership & management talk to the public.
