Spoilers are in abundance! Beware!

-----

"Fuck Me!"

...and with those words, I might have a new favorite book on my hands.

In case you don't know, AMERICAN VIRGIN is the new comic series by Steven T Seagal. He wrote the INCREDIBLE series THE CRUSADES a few years ago, and he's also done some Superman stuff, so OBVIOUSLY, I like his work; but this book surpasses his past work, in my opinion.

The book is centered around Adam, a kid who is on a religious campaign against pre-marital sex. His parents see great things in his future; his dad wants him to join his television ministry and bring in all those young viewers and his mom sees him going on to become President.

Adam, whoever, is looking towards the near future with his longtime girlfriend about to return from Africa. They are going to get married so he can finally get some action the way all good, hard driving christians want to. Marital bliss.

Yep, his world is perfect.

...until he sees on television that his girlfriend had been kidnapped by terrorists and is decapitated, just a few days from her coming back home.

Wow!

Scattered throughout the book, we are also told that Adam has an uncle Wilton, who is an ex-governor of Florida who was ousted amidst a nasty sex scandal, and he has a pervert friend named Levi and a brother who kidnaps Adam in hopes of getting a stripper to knock boots with him for his bachelor party.

This book can only get better and better. Go buy it!

I agree. I picked it up b/c it was a #1 and looked interesting on a slow week for my pull list and loved the story but then the end just blew me away and now I can't wait for the next issue.

Solely on Cerebus' recommendation, I went back to my LCS this afternoon to try and grab a copy.

It was sold out.

They get a second shipment on the weekends so maybe it will be there next week.

Meh. I flipped through it at the comic store, and it was alright. It has the possibility to be one of those "Y the Last Man"-style sleeper hits, but it didn't really grab me.

Seagle was the co-writer (and later solo) of Sandman Mystery Theater and the award-winning Superman book from last year, "It's a Plane."

And some X-Stuff.

Speaking of SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATER, DC's been (slowly0 putting that series out in TPB form. You should go buy those as well.

There is going to be a SMT revival later this year, but not done by either Seagle or Matt Wagner.

I picked up the first issue, and will probably at least get the first story arc before deciding if I continue or not.

Nothing that could knock off any of my current MUST READ titles: Infinite Crisis, The Walking Dead and Girls.
