Since there hasn't been a boxing thread in a while...

Did anyone catch that absolute schooling Joe Calzaghe laid on Jeff Lacy? It's interesting to see two fighters that haven't really been tested fight each other, and then see the huge distance in class between them. Calzaghe says he's moving up to Light Heavyweight now. Thoughts for the division:

Players: Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Clinton Woods, Glen Johnson. Let's pray Roy Jones doesn't make another comeback. None of these guys really has that much time left.

Woods and Johnson are fighting each other soon, and Hopkins and Tarver are supposed to also. I'm guessing Calzaghe vs. the winner of Woods-Johnson would be a HUGE money match in the UK, so look for that to happen next. I'm guessing Tarver dispatches Hopkins (who cannot fight 3 minutes a round anymore and shouldn't face a pressure fighter) and moves up to Heavy. Also look for Winky to absolutely dismantle Jermain Taylor in a similar fashion to Calzaghe-Lacy.

Anyone else psyched about the scene at 147-154? There's a bunch of great fights and even better intriguing matchups. Oscar-Mayorga? Anyone else picking the crazy Nica? Mayweather-Judah? Anyone else picking my fellow Brooklyn Jew? I could see it go either way. Floyd's not a huge puncher, so I don't think the "punk witha glass jaw" Judah's going to surface, but on the other hand Floyd's defence is so good, I don't think Judah will be able to wing any of his trademark left bombs. I'm guessing a fight similar to Spinks-Judah I, with a close decision that could go either way.

Obviously Floyd's going to take the money and fight Oscar (if he gets by Judah), but the match I'd really like to see is Tszyu-Mayweather. Everyone who says Tszyu is shot is deluding themselves. Tszyu dismantles slick lefty boxers - witness the absolute muggins of Judah and Sharmba Mitchell. I'd pick Tszyu by knockout in 4. Mayweather can take a decent shot (that's the only way to get by Tszyu - Ricky Hatton walked through half-a-dozen shots in his fight that would have floored anyone other sub-middleweight not named Erik Morales), but he definitely can't take a Kostya straight right on the money.

Dan Rafael said yesterday that Roy didn't have anything planned right now.

I thought Calzaghe looked like, well, Roy Frickin' Jones against Lacy. He was THAT good. I was also entertained by the Mosley-Vargas replay and the Cotto-Branco matchup, for what they were.

Next week is Rahman-Toney, which I'm pretty stoked for, because with that and Byrd-Klitschko some of the top heavyweights are fighting each other finally.

This is going to be a BIG year in many great fights coming up.
