This was the kind of episode that makes Lost the most obsessive show on TV. If this wasn't the best ep of the season so far, then it was 2nd. See what happens when you give some real answers?

The whole thing freaked me out. We really don't know why the Others were doing what they're doing, but at least we know *what* they were doing (I think). In between commercials, I was watching parts of Claire's episode from last season, cause I wanted to confirm that she wasn't "mixing up" flashbacks (with the dialogue she was remembering with Ethan).

But, the biggest revelation? Makeup and costumes? WHAT? Will we point back to that very moment a year from now and say that's when the show went downhill? That was Mr. Friendly (Zeke) talking to Ethan, right? Then who is the "him" that he was referring to? DeGroot?

In the shadow of the main story, Henry Gale ruled all. The dialogue throughout the entire was sharp, but Henry was the king. "How about you let me go?"

What happened in the last two minutes? My tape quit on me just when Locke was talking about Hemingway with Gale.

Gale asked Locke why he lets Jack make all the decisions. Locke said "we make all the decicions together," and then he left the room and angrily swept a bunch of dishes onto the floor.

Which I thought was odd -- I thought surely Locke was smart enough to see through Gale's transparent attempt to drive a wedge between the two of them (Locke and Jack).

As for the costumes -- what do the Others gain by wearing them? Well, I've been assuming -- partially, I guess, because of the way the Others look -- that whatever experiment that was going on there has been abandoned, or gone horribly wrong in some way. Now I don't think that's the case -- which might mean that the Others are in contact with the outside world. Which seems like a good thing to keep secret from the Survivors.

Beyond that, I dunno.

Thanks for the recap, Karlos.

The disguises are meant for one of two reasons. One: intimidation --- MC Gainey's character looks a lot creepier as a bearded mountain man than a clean-cut Other-looking dude. Two: disguise. It would be really interesting if Gainey showed up in the Lostaway camp and, say, Charlie or someone recognized him from their pre-island life. "Hey, you're the travel agent who sold me the ticket on Oceanic 815!"

Gale is totally an Other, and I thought Mr. Eko was going to beat it out of him with the Jesus stick. I wonder who would win a torture-off between Eko and Sayid?

Sayid. Eko's scarier and would pull out the most painful death for you, but Sayid is the extraction master.

Eko didn't have to beat anything out of the guy though, he knew the guy was an other the moment he looked him over. Good read Eko, you'd be a hell of a poker player.

They got around to having flashbacks that only flash backed to time on the island a lot sooner than I thought they would.

Fine episode, just not as geektastic as the Charlie/Sayid/Sawyer heel turns of the previous week.

Great episode - is there a better character on the show right now than Mr. Eko ? And what was the signifigance of his cutting of the little beard dread other than to put the fear of Eko into Henry Gale. Great move by Henry throwing out the line to Locke in hopes of driving a wedge between him & jack - not that that split hasn't been coming for a long time.

I couldn't help but wonder if the airplanes in the baby's mobile were Oceanic Air planes......

Granted, one could stick a wedge between Jack and Locke just by looking at them funny, but Locke should totally have seen how transparent Gale was being with this little manuever. I wonder if the writer's aren't intentionally 'dumbing' down Locke this season to disperse some of the theories that he was behind everything last season. (Like the theory that he allegedly had involvement in Claire's kidnapping; although this episode didn't disprove that theory, it sure seems alot less likely.)

There was a shot towards the end when Locke was talking to Gale in the cell. Over Locke's shoulder, you could see that the ventilation grate had been removed and was covered with two boards of wood. What was that all about? I thought that after last week, the way they showed Sayid dropping the pliers and leaving them in the cell, that Gale would use them this week. But if they are letting him roam freely around the hatch and even took the time to set up a bed and mediocre quarters for him, I would think they'd have found the pliers by now. Or is Gale using the pliers to escape through the air duct? Which I wouldn't expect because how could Locke and Jack not see that?

How come just about everyone agrees Gale is an other except Jack?

So, assuming Claire's memory is correct...

It sure seems like we are supposed to jump to the conclusions that Ethan, Friendly/Zeke and crew, and Goodwin are all working together. Apparently, Friendly isn't actually bearded. Was that supposed to be him talking to Ethan in the hall? It sounded like him, but I don't think it looked like him beard or not. Somehow, the revelation of the theatrical glue makes me question everything else we 'know'. Can't trust what the Others have said, can't trust Orientation film. The vaccine for Claire's baby... was that the same stuff Desmond was injecting? If so, I'd be willing to wager that Desmond is in on it too. It would seem that the Others are going to great lengths to keep the survivors (and Rousseau) in the dark.

This seemed to provide a lot of clues to a lot of questions, and I have no good way of sorting them out. Crazy episode. I liked how there was that screeching and thumping to signify a flashback instead of the usual jetliner sounds.

I noticed that Eko cut two knots out of his beard, which I assumed symbolized the two men he'd killed.

And while Locke is a lot more emotionally fragile than he lets on to the rest of the group, I agree it's dumb for him to fall so hard and so easily for Gale's attempt at channeling Battlestar Galactica's Leoben.

If the guy in hall and Zeke are supposed to be different people, they're both being played by the same actor (M.C. Gainey).

The theatrical makeup just reinforces my belief that the island is one big Skinner Box.

Maybe they're really trying to set up Locke as a guy who wants to believe. He got conned out of a kidney in season 1, and he got conned out of a cache of weapons in season 2, all because he believed the con artist (Daddy / Sawyer). That being said, that was some very transparent psychological bullshit from Uncle Henry from KansasMinnesota there.

I think we are being duped into thinking Locke is really stronger than he really is, much like the people on the island.

I like the way they did the flashbacks this week and it's good to get some more clues. It looks like the 'others' and Dharma might be one in the same, and the diguise is to look tattered when they really have access to the outside world. Also, who is the "He' that Zeke was talking about? The Asain man in the film reel? ... but why do they need children?

Locke is an awesome character and all, but let's not forget that he isn't exactly brilliant. Who knows what else he's been tricked out of besides a kidney and the guns...

Was I the only one whose jaw dropped right before Eko cut off the knots in his beard? When he said that he had to tell someone about killing the two men and then raised the knife to his throat, I thought for SURE he was going to slit his own throat. My mouth was agape for like the next 5 minutes, mostly because I would have been really sad to see Eko go.

I figure the costumes are necessary to convince the survivors that the Others have mastered the island. Right now the main thing that keeps the survivors afraid of the Others is their belief that the Others are masters of the island's wilderness, that they could be creeping around anywhere at any time. If the survivors knew that the Others were a bunch of wacko scientists (potentially in contact with the outside world), I think an upheaval would be a certainty.

I just watched this episode last night (extreme tape-delay), and enjoyed it. I've heard the speculation that Gale was in the operating room (lost-media.com)(guy sitting in front left "looking at the camera"), but that could be crap. Also, ABC has their diary (abc.go.com), but what is that about? Gale's brother? I don't know how legit this diary is (spoiler-wise), but being that the only people who know (or we believe to know) of this guy being in the hatch or existing at all are Sayid, Jack, Locke, Eko, and Rousseau. Who else is there, and who of these people would have said anything to anyone?

Don't get me wrong, I do like this show, and will be a total Lost beyotch until the end. One question I have though is if Rousseau has been on the island for sixteen years plus, how would she need to be lead ANYWHERE?? I mean, think of all the things you've done in the last sixteen years. She should know every inch of that island! She is not all there, of course, but still. She knows her way around a lot of things, so she obviously explores and doesn't stay cooped up in her hideout, so I would think she'd have a far better idea on where "the others" are at and what's really going on. SIXTEEN YEARS!
