| #1 Posted on 1.3.06 0026.33 Reposted on: 1.3.13 0026.40 | It's probably my second-favorite time of the year (with the Easter Vigil being #1). LENT! The title of the thread says it all.
For myself;
- Soft drinks. - Chocolate milk. - Ice cream. - Cookies. - Fasting and abstaining from meat on Fridays (one meal of plain noodles and a couple of things of bread). - Maybe fasting on another day of the week. - Focus on the repentance aspect of Lent. - Hoping to start praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy once a week. - Make the effort to go to Mass during the weekdays at least once while I'm still un-employed (FIND OUT TOMMORROW IF THIS WILL BE NO LONGER TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). - Try to continue praying for the souls of the departed.
And maybe some other stuff too.
EDIT: Update my sig more often to share some trolling love.

(I am excited to go to Southeast Christian Church's easter program this year - certainly the best such program east of the Chrystal Cathedral - we haven't been for several years, and they're taking a couple years off to retool it after this year. Back in 2001, I decided to give up being a 'smart' wrestling fan, and stopped spending so much time reading all the news sites and whatnot. Of course, that turned out to be one of the biggest news periods in a while, as Lawler got fired and replaced by Heyman, the WWF bought WCW, and Wrestlemania XVII all fell in (or right around) that time period. I fear for what could transpire if I decide to give that up again... | Matt Tracker

I kicked soda this way: Drink fruit-flavored water instead. As you empty the bottles, fill them again with tap/filtered water and drink all that. You'll get some flavor residue, but it will be diluted. Eventually you'll be drinking plain water. It took me about two weeks to do this.
You can get flavored water cheap at Wal-Mart or Sam's. I recommend Key Lime Water. Fifty cents a bottle. | CRZ

| #14 Posted on 1.3.06 1020.46 Reposted on: 1.3.13 1021.20 | Add me to the list of individuals also giving up regular soda for the duration of Lent (diet soda may still be deemed acceptable, though). I'm also going to avoid meat on both Wednesdays and Fridays; that's been a family tradition for some reason for as long as I can remember.
Other than that, I plan to get back into the habit of going to Mass each and every Sunday. Had a good run last year but unfortunately have missed about 50% of the time so far in '06. That has to change.
And, obviously, I'll get ashes sometime between work and class tonight. Tried to parlay that into a "mini Catholic date" and go with a friend in class but she doesn't seem enthusiastic about going... :-( | geemoney

| #15 Posted on 1.3.06 1134.54 Reposted on: 1.3.13 1135.06 | I kinda kicked soda and ice cream to the curb about a month ago when I started hitting the gym and trying to eat right here at college. If only I waited a month, I could've been set!
However, at about 1:00 this morning as I was going to bed, I realized I needed to give something up. My roomate suggested chocolate milk- I'm pretty much off white milk now, and I drink chocolate milk for dinner all the time, at home (mix it yourself!) or at college (pre-mixed!). This will be challenging.
And yes, no meat today/on Friday's for me. Unless I forget. Which I seem to do at least once every Lenten season. | Corajudo

Actually, only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting (defined as having two snacks and one light meal). The other Fridays are days of abstinence (no meat; not what you might be thinking!) but not fasting.
As for me, I'll be going to Mass one additional weekday each week, and my wife and I are going to do a daily devotional together. | drjayphd

The entire gesture just seemed empty (going without something for 40 whole days?) and was thrilled to get around the enforced fasting/abstinence a few years ago. Nowadays, my parents (more Mom, actually) respect that aspect.
EDIT: Seems I actually am giving something up. My relationship.
