On a lot of occasions last year a leadoff runner would get on, second base would be theirs for the taking (85 steals against Piazza), then you have no outs with a runner in scoring position. This obviously can be a problem. On the other hand he played 113 games last year and he would've led the Padres in homeruns and third in RBI. So considering how cheap they got him, I think it's a good deal.
And as a Piazza fan, i'm glad it's San Diego. If he ended up with the Yanks or the Phillies that would've killed me. I was hoping he'd get Oakland's DH spot though. | redsoxnation

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? Piazza has never struck out more than 93 times; with the exception of two years _ 1996 and 97 _ Klesko has never struck out more than 89. Bellhorn and Cameron? Yeah, they whiff a lot. But neither Klesko nor Piazza deserves to be tagged with that label. | Guru Zim

He's still a Goddamn Dodger in my book, and I don't like it. It's like Chris Gwynn playing for the Dodgers or Hoffman's brother coaching for them... it just sits badly with me.
Sure, it's not a terrible offensive move. I just think we're going to see just how bad it can be defensively.
ALTHOUGH: He has to be better than Miguel Ojeda, and we played him far too long, so... this might be good.
I'd say that Piazza leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but that would be far too easy of a setup.

I am definitely not happy about this. Piazza's best days are well behind him. He's a terrible defensive catcher. He's a terrible first baseman. He would be much better off in the AL, and so would the Padres.

As a life-long Padre fan and He-man Dodger Hater, I detest Piazza, Lasorda, and anything Dodger related. It took months for me to get used to Steve Garvey in a Padre uniform when he signed in 1983. Thankfully, Garvey provided the greatest moment in Padre history in the 1984 NLCS. He redeemed himself. Will Piazza?

David Ross is better than Miguel Ojeda. Dude fell apart last season. If Piazza can find his swing again, he could make up for his horrid defense. Oh, what am I smoking.
All four catchers (Piazza, Mirabelli, Ross, and Todd Greene) with MLB experience on the Padres Spring Training roster are stop-gap catchers. The Padres are looking forward to bringing up George Kotteras, who is supposed to be ready for 07 or 08. Kotteras had a great 05 Spring Training and had a fine season in the minors. | Guru Zim

The Pads stuck with him (well, it's not like people were clamoring to trade for him) for two seasons.
Dude couldn't really catch a good game. There is a reason that the Pads won when Ramon was behind the plate and lost a lot when he was injured.
I think Piazza can probably call a game. He used to be able to hit. Maybe he can do that here as well. Hopefully he didn't use steroids to create his numbers in the past, because he's probably off of them now if he was ever on them.
