I've been hearing, reading, and seeing a LOT of hype for The Arctic Monkeys. A fairly young group out of Sheffield, the band is being heralded as the best English export in a long time, and their forthcoming album hyped as "the Soundtrack for 2006."

I purchased (and have listened to) the "Fake Tales of San Francisco" (b/w "From the Ritz to the Rubble") single, and the "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" EP, because they were all told less than five bucks, and I wanted to get a taste of what I'm jumping into before I shell out ten bucks for their first LP (which was just released today).

I've had time to listen to the tracks, and really let what I heard sink in. I've given it several spins, and...um...

...yeah, am I missing something? I just don't hear this great tremendous band that everyone keeps harping about. Granted, these are just the EPs, and I haven't heard anything from the actual LP, although a few of the songs - "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor," "Fake Tales Of San Francisco," and "From the Ritz to the Rubble" - are on the track listing for the LP.

Are there any other Ws here that have heard them? Is it just me?

It's not just you.

They will be HYOOGE in the UK, but the success won't carry over here. I'm liking what I'm hearing from them ("Fake Tales..." and "I Bet..." in particular), but it's nothing mindblowing.

They're getting the press darling treatment, while other bands like Editors, The Rakes, and The Cribs are putting out the quality stuff.

The video version of 'I bet..' is so much more awesome as it sounds a lot less refined and produced.

I have been listening to the album several times last week and it's good music to listen to. Nothing new but worth your time. The songs get better after a few spins.

They are a bit more marketable I believe (straight forward rock most of the time) then bands as the mentioned Rakes and the Editors.

Personally I really dig 'We are scientists' as well.
