I haven't watched SNL in a while, and DAMN has it gone downhill!
I had to turn it off after the fifth sketch or so, which was a Horatio Sanz vehicle in which he plays a slutty, crass woman named Carol (a recurring character, I assume -- her "catch phrase" is...wait for it... "I'm Carol"... yeah, fucking hilarious!) at a gallery opening opposite Sargaard's sophisticated, yet lecherous, gallery owner. I didn't laugh once. Sanz (man of a thousand faces, all of them the same) the most over-rated performer in the show's history, has never made me laugh, but last night he reached a new low in not-being-funny.
The other sketches I saw weren't any better.
Sarsgaard appeared to reading cue cards and kept flubbing his lines. Normally, I quite like Sarsgaard, but he may have been one of the worst hosts since Nancy Kerrigan.
Feb. 4th Steve Martin is hosting, so that might lure me back, but otherwise, I think it's time to shoot this lame horse and plough it under in the back field. | Promote this thread! |             | ges7184

Reposted on: 22.1.13 0942.00 | It was horrible! I think I stayed for the skit just after the "I'm Carol" bomb, but I have funnier dreams, so I went to sleep. I like Peter Sarsgaard, but the writers of SNL failed him miserably-- Not one funny skit. Didn't help that he flubbed reading his cue cards from time to time, but it just wasn't funny.
I long for the day where SNL moves away from this sarcastic, dry, intellectual brand of humor and once again embrace some slapstick, borderline juvenile, over the top characters again. | JST

I wasn't sure who he was either. So I looked him up on IMDB and got this. Recent movies he's been in are Jarhead and Flightplan
As for SNL being unwatchable, yeah I really don't like it now either. I've hardly watched it this season. However, its always gone through down periods (the years between the original cast era and the Eddie Murphy era, then the years between the Myers/Carvey/Hartman/Farley cast and the Ferrel-led cast) so they might have another good run coming up, depending on who is part of the cast and on the writing team.

A friend of mine is a Harvard Bio-engineering student and she IM'ed because she was so excited that a former Harvard improve guy was on SNL.
I turned to it and caught that Target sketch. I was wondering like you, how the hell was that considered funny. I know one sketch doesn't make a show, but it didn't grip me. I was completely smegging ungripped. | Roy.

Of course, if I had any military secrets, showing a few Updates with her and Jimmy Fallon would pry them loose in no time, so maybe I'm just out of touch.
I caught a little of last night, and, like a lot of others have said, it was pretty sub par. I can't figure out if it was the awfulness of Sarsgaaaaaaaard or just the fact that there's very few consistantly funny people in the cast and writing crew. There seems to be a whole lot of "we're smarter than everybody" humor coming out of the show, and it's more condescending and/or obscure than clever and timely. | Oliver

SNL has always been the most inconsistent show on TV, able to go from riotously funny to embarrassing in the span of a sketch, but the current 'era' needs some revamping. Last season may have been the worst in the show's history, and that includes the legendarily bad 1980-81 and 85-85 years.
That said, I've been really impressed with the latest cast members they've added to the show (Will Forte, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg). The problem is the old warhorses like Horatio/Poehler/Meyers/Dratch/Hammond, who all need to be put out to pasture to really let the newer cast shine. Lorne Michaels used to not have any compunction about totally flushing an established cast if things weren't working properly, so let's hope he gets back to his old ways by next season. | The Vile1

No, it's Sarsgaard. He was the rich friend with the house in Garden State, for those of you that saw that, and one of the researchers in Kinsey. He was in Shattered Glass, I think as Jason Glass's boss.
I think he's a good (by which I mean "perfectly serviceable") actor, although I've never seen anything that really made me sit up and take notice.

There were some pretty decent gags, but I think their effect on a lot of people wore off with the workings of time and overhype.
