Quite an episode, especially in the non-Jack flashback (the 5th such by the way) portion of the show.

M.C. Gainey is perfectly cast as the leader of the Others. His "Light 'em up" was awesome and showed how in control of the situation he was and Jack wasn't. (To use a wrestling analogy, Gainey = Jake the Snake Roberts)

It seems we've found Rosseau's missing child; "Alex" was the person that brought the captive Kate out to "Zeke"

The show needs more Locke/Sawyer moments - the turning of the nicknames back on Sawyer was a great little moment.

Why would Jack use Ana-Lucia and not Sayid to train his "army" (and what a rag-tag bunch that would be) - is he saying the LAPD is tougher than the Republican Guard? I always figured way back when we saw Locke playing war games on his break at Initech that we'd see him using those skills, but I always thought the war would be Jack v Locke (a la The Stand, with Locke as Randall Flagg), but those ideas of island civil war are fading.

Does anyone else get a vibe that Locke's former paralysis and the island's resident spinal surgeon is going to become an issue one of these days? I can't believe I didn't think of it before.

Hurley's "on a desert island" scenario made my week.

ETA: Monica Dean (the daughter in Jack's flashback) needs her own show NOW, preferrably in a new Wonder Woman series. Absolutely breathtaking.

Perhaps he knew Sayid wouldn't want to use his soldier skills anymore. Didn't Sayid say something like that before?

Great episode though. I've really enjoyed the last two episode.

The Kate hate continues to grow, though..

They just got back to the island, and Saed has been making himself scarce since the death of Shannon. I think Jack just asked the closest person to him...I myself am guilty of the same thing, since I over-analyzed his asking of Ana Lucia for the better part of the night, but considering the circumstances it's not THAT ludicrous.

We're seeing the characters break down. Kate is losing her shit, Michaels has definitely lost it, and Jack may be losing it in his need to establish control. Train an army? OK, sure. Give everyone a gun and show them how to use it. But good luck tracking The Others or exploiting the land better than they can.

Zeke's comments tried to establish him as bad ass, but it doesn't jibe with what we've seen him do. He can't bemoan the Flight 815 people tramping on his island when he blew up the raft that might lead to their escape. Then again, what were the odds the raft crew would survive? Those left on the island would never have known what happened to them.

There's still a lot more going on here as we have to figure out where Desmond and Rousseau are busying themselves. And we need to find out what that cable leading out to sea actually does and what it's connected to on both ends.

Guess I'm saying the episode does more to reveal Jack than anything about the island, and that's a bit disappointing.

I hope, next week, they show Ana Lucia training Sayid on how to use a rifle.

Last night was a good episode, because it brought the focus back onto Jack, Locke, and Sawyer. The confrontation between them and "Mr. Friendly" (according to IMDB) was, on one hand, interesting and disappointing on the other. Obvious questions like "Why did you burn down our raft if you don't want us here?" and "Who are you?" didn't get asked which really plays to the intelligence-insulting that the writers give us.

I realize info needs to come out in small doses, but they're doing it at the expense of the characters. "Jack, are you married?" "Not anymore." never got followed up with a "What happened?", which is, you know, the natural progression of the conversation. At least we finally got some sort of answer to that last night.

I'm guessing that now things are building to a big battle in the season finale, where characters may die and blood will be spilled in the process of finding another hatch to leave us with all summer.

EDIT: It was "Mr. Friendly", my bad.

Definitely agreed that this was a hell of an episode. It was one that gave me goosebumps with all the one-liners.

M.C. Gainey = Mr. Friendly. What better source than ABC itself?

Though it's not part of the Lost TV show canon, everybody noticed that Friendly quoted Alvar Hanso, right ("From the dawn of our species, Man has been blessed with curiosity.")?

I wonder if there was any significance to the interaction between Friendly and Sawyer. For one, Friendly never addressed Sawyer by name. And the reaction Friendly gave when Sawyer threatened a return meeting was curious.

Granted, they probably should have shown them asking those questions, but who's to say that they didn't ask about that off camera while Locke was building the fire. And even then, the obvious assumptive answer is that 'Zeke' wouldn't answer the questions anyway. Even with some of the other answers you give, there's nothing to say that Jack hasn't discussed his marital situation with any of the other characters. We simply haven't seen it, and part of the fun (or frustration) is in the revealing of that information to the viewer.

Besides, I think the more obvious fact that Jack should have pointed out is that they don't want to be on the island anymore than the Others seem to want them there. If Zeke and co. can help get them off the island, then they can have the island back to themselves.

There was a small part of me that was thinking that Kate is somehow in league with them. That scene with her at gunpoint felt like the scene with the Nazi holding Elsa at gunpoint in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I kept waiting for Locke to be all "He won't shoot her. She's one of them." and then we get the reveal where he's all "She talks in her sleep..."

Still, I love how cold Jack is towards Kate now.

I agree that all of the characters are finally starting to lose it.

When Jack said they've been on the island 50 days, was that an estimate, or has it only been two days since they blew open the hatch? (that was day 48, right?)

By his logic, that raft was made from his wood, so why can't he do to it whatever he wanted.

I got the impression that Jack just came up with the thought at that moment if not on his way over to his. Besides, the reason he want to her first isn't just because she has 'combat' training, but also because she's killed some of the Others before anyway. Of the original group, only Charlie can claim that he's done that. I fully expect Sayid (and Eko, given his status as an Other-killer as well) to be roped into this training plan as it develops.

I don't know why I didn't notice this earlier, but what is the significance of Sawyer naming EVERYTHING? I liked the scene with him and Locke, because he calls Locke "Mr. Clean" and then Locke retorts by calling Sawyer by his real name. Names hold power, and while that exchange was a power struggle in its own way, I wonder if the issue of magic and knowing the true name of something won't come into play later.

I had heard that too, though I didn't notice it myself. Further evidence for the theory that Zeke/Friendly/Smiles is none other than DeGroot himself.

They blew open the hatch on day 40. (Season one was 40 days and 40 nights - very Biblical.) The tailies flashback was called "The Other 48 Days", so Day 48 must've been the day that Shannon died.

Just something I thought of...

Have "the others" killed anyone, besides the guy that Ethan killed? I mean, there is nothing solid saying that they killed the stewardess or any of the "tailies" they took.

Here is a pretty well thought out but out there theory that my younger brother just sent me. I have only had a chance to scan it do to traffic and too many meetings scheduled for this AM but it looks like it is worth the read.

Even if they didn't succeed, they did try to kill Michael, Sawyer and Jin by gunfire and a molotov cocktail. If Ethan really is in cahoots with Mr. Friendly, then yes; Ethan killed a crash survivor and hung Charlie.
