To everyone here: how did you meet the important person in your life?

With my sweetie, I found her bio on an online matchmaker site; We emailed and chatted for about a month and a half. We met, and we started dating shortly thereafter.

It's now been a month, and we're really happy. So far :-)

I was working in the SF area and was a last minute substitute for a workers compensation claims class back in NJ because the woman who was supposed to go got sick. (Thank you Linda Hess) I was one of 2 guys in a class with 17 women. I walked into the class and saw a cute girl with big brown eyes across the room. The next morning I changed the name tags around so she would be my table partner for the day. She ignored me. 6 months later I was transferred back to NYC and a year after that she finally agreed to go out with me. We have been together 14 years and married for 11 1/2 of those.

How were you guys keeping in touch all that time? Were you chasing her the whole time, or did it take you that long to muster up the courage to ask her out?

In my case, I moved from a fairly urban area to a little farm town when I was 13. My (now ) wife was in my class, but she was a really goody two shoes and I was a hood. But she tells me I had a nice look to me and she had her eye on me. I really never had my eye on her until our Junior Year. We had a date after both of us attended a state civics program called Boys (and hers was Girls) state between Junior and Senior years. The rest (through Army and College and almost 27 years married) is history. So I guess it's been 35 years since we met. A little more than that, I guess.

My girlfriend and I sat on a citizen's development advisory committee. We went out for drinks a couple of times to vent about the crazy landlords who we had to deal with on the committee, and realized that we were a match made in political hell.

Ironically, we knew all of the same people, we lived a block away from each other, but we had never met until the day she was appointed. We still laugh at the absolute lunacy of having a long-term relationship develop out of that stupid committee (I still serve, she resigned after a year).

I saw "that hot girl from OChem class" at a party we were having at my frat house a couple of years ago. I jumped at the opportunity to actually meet her rather than pretend not to stare at her from across the lecture hall. I still think to myself sometimes "dude I can't believe I'm with the hot girl from OChem."

Chat room. No, *really.* I was more a lurker than a participant, but she must have noticed me and we had a few conversations, and we got along well. We dropped out of touch a while, but met in the room again at a time when she'd just broken up with her long-time boyfriend.

She was about 100 miles away, so eventually I invited myself down to visit her, although she claims to this day that she was the one who did the inviting. In any case, we finally met in person, really liked each other, and the next weekend she came up to visit me. And today she's Mrs. Shem.

I was chasing with the help of one of her girlfriends. She was constantly talking me up to the future Mrs. Dunk and making sure that I got invites to the same parties.

Honestly? She was my wife's best friend.

We met during rehearsals for a musical, and my wife at the time thought we'd get along great, seeing as how we were both English majors. And we did. Absolutely nothing happened between us until my wife went loco and ran away. We two English majors hooked up, and we got married four years later.

She's technically the second The Lovely Mrs. Tracker, as my firt wife was TLMT Version One-ah.

I went to Ocean City, Maryland with 3 of my buddies for a seven day woman chasing vacation during the summer of '91. Met my future wife while my buddies and I were throwing a football around on the boardwalk. I quickly found out that she lived about 30 miles away from where I lived back in Pennsylvania. One of my buddies and I got her and her friends phone number, and when we got home from the beach we called them up and double dated a couple times. My friend got dumped after his third date, where as I ended up marrying mine in the summer of '96.

It's the first sentence to this story that always gets people... :-)

I'd been subscribed to a mailing list for vampyres-related lore and fiction for some time and a through some collaborative writing for the list "met" her. The list had a get-together in Illinois and she took a bus to meet me in Columbus, where I lived, and I drove us to the party. After coming back, nothing much came of it until I went to visit her at her college during a stressful time and at that point things clicked. After she graduated, she moved to Columbus for a year and a half, and we relocated back to MA and got married at that point. Been married a little over 8 years now and all said and done have known her for about 11 years.

I'm just glad that her mom got over referring to me as "that Internet person" once she actually met me. I really wouldn't have wanted to deal with the stereotypical mother-in-law.

She was dating a guy from my high school and church when I first met her. I wondered why a hot chick like that was with a guy like him. He was a nice guy, but nothing special. Then I wondered how come he had a girlfriend (that was hot) and I had no one. Then she began flirting with me but I was oblivious.

She got a promise ring from him for Christmas 1988 and she and I had our first date January 6, 1989. I always kid around with her when she "promises" something, whether its a "real" promise or a "promise ring" promise.

Then I duck as she throws something at me...

I'm a big Usenet guy, especially the TV and music groups. About two years ago, I got into a little thread with a female poster on the 24 group. I decided to do a little flirting...turns out, she knew me from the West Wing group, and had admired my writing and my (liberal) politics. So we started e-mailing. Then it turns out, she lived about 9 thousand miles away from me, and I mean that literally. BUT...she had a cousin attending college in New York City, and was coming to NYC twice a year to check in on the cousin. So we talked about meeting up on her next visit. Her cousin ended up transferring to a school in Europe, but by that time we'd gotten serious enough that she just came here to see me. She was supposed to come for a two-week visit, but she's basically been living here ever since, and just flying back for about a month at a time.

We're pretty deliriously happy, and shopping for rings.

I was doing volunteer work for one of the Christian groups (Catholic Christian Outreach) at the University of Ottawa, and she went to it because they were the only Christian group who put up posters advertising their exsistence for the first week or two of school (and she wasn't Catholic at the time either....she's becoming one though, we start RCIA TONIGHT~!!!). She went, we met. Three days or so later we started dating. Been over a year now, and after I find me a job we be getting married.

Mrs. JJD was living at the same apartment complex as my dad and brother, way back in the summer of 1993. I was visiting one weekend, chilling in the pool, probably big-timing everyone my brother's age because I had moved out and was the only one there that had done so. Mrs. JJD lived in a second-floor apartment and was chatting with someone from her deck, and I hollered for her to come down and join the party, which she did. I honestly didn't think anything of it at the time, as she had a boyfriend and I wasn't looking for a girlfriend.

(NOTE: Mrs. JJD's version of the story includes the line "I bit him on the back on the pool." I have no recollection of that happening, but it would surely have been in response to something I would have said.)

A couple of months later I went down for another visit, and this time Mrs. JJD and I ended up spending some time alone after everyone had hung out for the day. Mrs. JJD still had a boyfriend, but we definitely had "thoughts", as it would turn out. I didn't do anything at the time because I lived three hours away and didn't want to go into a long-distance relationship. Oh, and she still had that boyfriend, so there were no guarantees there anyway. I DID make sure to send her a birthday card as soon as I got home, though.

I think we'd spoken a couple of times on the phone, totally randomly, in the months around that time, and finally, bored one day at work I decided to ring her up. She answered the phone sounding sleepy/sick and asked if she could call me that night.

When she called me that night, she explained that the reason she sounded sleepy/sick was because she was IN THE MIDDLE OF BREAKING UP WITH . Spooky. I mean, what ARE the odds of that? I think they had gone out for over a year, and she'd never outwardly expressed any unhappiness with the guy, and I call her in the middle of their breakup? Awesome.

Naturally, I did NOT make a move right away. In fact, I didn't make a move AT ALL. One day Mrs. JJD called me and asked me to be her date to this formal thing they were having at her school. Her and her girlfriends had volunteered months before, obviously thinking they would take their boyfriends, and now she was single but she HAD to go and would I like to go?

I didn't say yes right away, because it was Thanksgiving weekend and I was already coming down for that and the thing was the next weekend and I didn't want to commit to going down there two weekends in a row, but halfway through Thanksgiving weekend I decided there was NO WAY anyone else was going to be her date for it.

Seven months later she finished school and moved in with me, and we got married in '97.

I've known my girlfriend for 15 years. We met in youth group, but never had a relationship beyond being friends (she's two years older than me, and I had no courage when I was 13). Three years ago she got married and I attended the wedding.

I was single for eight months after ending a five-year relationship when I found out on Christmas 2004 that she had just gotten divorced. We started hanging out, and we've now been together for a year.

I've been talked into telling my story:

We were both on the (obviously co-ed) church basketball team, and we kept ending up sitting next to each other at all of the after-game team dinners at Denny's.

After practice one night, we were the only ones that wanted to go out to eat, so we went by ourselves (she also snaked me into taking her to Home Depot so I could use my van to carry a big space heater to her house for her).We spent the night trading bad ex-relationship horror stories & I mentioned to her that I had sen my P.O.S. ex the previous weekend where the ex hinted to me that I should come to her house the following weekend so we could do it because her parents wouldnt be home. I told my now-wife that I was tempted to go over there for the free action, but I really didnt wanna get mixed up with that ex again. My now-wife said she knew where I was coming from because she had been in that situation too, and wanted to do what she could to keep me busy so I wouldnt get bored & give in to the temptation. So we ended up going to the movies on Friday night, I think I helped her move furniture in my van on Saturday, dinner on me after our basketball game on Saturday night, church & a church luncheon on Sunday, and she made me dinner on Sunday night to repay me for paying for the dinners & the movie on Friday & Saturday. That Sunday, we had the "Thank you for keeping me from giving in to action from my ex, but where is this going?" talk, and we started dating officially after that.

That was all in late 2001. We got engaged in 2002 & married in 2003.

My girlfriend and I worked in the same place. I still work there and she now works somewhere else. But while we were still working at the same place, we had to keep our relationship a secret for a long time. After she got a different job and we could tell people, everyone said they already knew because we never spoke to each other at work, and it looked like we were trying too hard to seem uninterested in each other.
