Only the unlikely scenario under which the two sides do not strike a contract agreement will keep New York Jets coach Herman Edwards from moving on to the Kansas City Chiefs in the same capacity, ESPN.com has learned.

The two teams late Thursday agreed on compensation that will free Edwards from the two years remaining on his Jets contract.

Under the agreement, the Jets will receive a fourth-round pick in the 2006 draft. The two franchises had been haggling for days.

Didn't the Jets kinda screw themselves when they said that they didn't want Edwards back. Weren't they originally going to get a 2nd round pick?

I've always liked Herm and thought he did a good job....is there a reason the Jets are letting him go so easily?

He went 4-12 this season yet wanted a contract extension despite having 2 years remaining on his contract.
As for the Chiefs fans: Remember those exciting offensive games you've witnessed the past 3-4 years? Well, commit them to memory as Herm 'Plays to Win the Game' and yet finds a way to lose 13-10/16-13 with Larry Johnson running up the middle 800 times per season and Tony Gonzalez being used exclusively as a blocker.

I'll give you the contract extension, but I would think you could hardly blame him for the Jets 4-12 season, what with all the injuries.

Herm Edwards is a fine coach, and this is from a Jets fan. The cover 2 defense isn't the best in the world, though, so maybe somebody can clear that up.

What scares me is the name that's been tossed around for NY: Haslett. Wait and see.

There was a rumor going around the Cities for a while about Tice flying up there.

Good luck with that.
