Happy New Year. Weird New Year show as the part before the New Year kind of ended on high note. The part immediately after midnight really was weak. Should Auld aquaintance be forgot and all that. I was pretty sick when wrote this the other day but still stand by most of it (although I don't think I got over how listles the pull apart brawl was).

WHAT WORKED:

NOISE MAKERS~!!! Wowii I hate me a TNA chanting audience they got a stupid song for every wrestler and a stupid chant for all occasions. But you put noisemakers in their mouths and they can’t be bothered to sing the Song of the Volga boatman every time Abyss comes out. It really felt like a lucha show with just loud noisemakers, faces getting cheered and heels getting razzed. They need to give the audience noisemakers every week.

BULLET BOB ARMSTRONG~!!!
Three Bullet segments and damn does Bullet rule. Not only is he really good but the way people react to him in all his segments is really great. As everyone in this angle treats the Bullet with respect and deference. Shane Douglas comes off as less of a goofball. Kip James will bow his head when the Bullet admonishes him, etc. Watch the second backstage Bullet segment where Bullet is talking with Konan. And holy shit I was just blown away as well it’s wrestling and you knew Konan’s gonna stab him but watching that segment it really felt like the eventual turn was going to actually mean something as well Bullet was a guy who took him into the family. Really watching that segment made me go “Damn this angle might actually draw” maybe not in TNA but if they do the turn right and Homicide forks Bullet in the head this might draw Ward Family numbers for Wrestling Birmingham. They kind of blow the turn later in the show but still Bullet is great in actual turn and the way Konan feels awkward calming down Apolo…wants to send a message but still…was cool.

Nice bumps by Kenny King

Thiago is the greatest name ever.

Joe vs. Roderick Storng was the best of the competitive squashes on the show as Joe gives Strong more offense than anyone else has in Strongs time in this fed. We interrupt this match for MYSTERIES~!!! Look Shanon Moore is on the entranceway wall. What’s he doing? Ron Harris is looking upward at him…has he figured out how to climb that wall? Are the TNA bookers inspired enough to try to recreate Dreamer v. Lee with Moore and Don Harris? Look it’s a Hebner brother? He’s wearing a TNA shirt? Why haven’t I gotten a memo explaining? He has a clipboard…what do you suppose he’s writing in his clipboard? Did you understand whats behind Jackie Gayda deal? Match was fine even with the interuption of multiple mysteries as it all takes place during the early Joe control section but still left me wondering where was Alex Shelley and the Shelley cam? Where was Ryan Shamrock collecting money from Slick Johnson?

AJ STYLES vs. JAMES STORM—this is the match of the night. I think both guys were probably legit busted up from the PPV during the tapings and so both are a little looser and more careful with each other than usual but their worked stuff looks sharp so you’re less aware of two guys being careful and more aware of the actual angle of two guys still banged up. Really liked Storms whirly bird and the way AJ ate it. Also the fighting German into takedown section was sweet. The “overbooked” finish with all the interference spots (and the set up for the tag was super southernfried) the difference between that match and how the interference worked in it and the Christian vs. Harris match and the interference in that was night and day. Its difference between by the numbers southern finish and by the numbers Patt Patterson finish. AJ’s good at working hot over southern face and Storn was really fun here working heel. I would like to see Storm more in singles. His heel stuff was pretty on the money, the holding onto the headlock, the bailing to floor, the throwing AJs head into the turnbuckle as an escape. It’s odd as he’s a lot better at working heel in this singles match, than AMW is at working heel in tags.

AJ/Daniels vs. AMW was a fine little match later in the night. But it was somewhat disappointing. Its nice that AMW actually gets heel heat from the shitty Orlando fans. I talked about the lucha like razzing of the heels and its what AMW gets. AJ v. Storm doesn’t get the dueling “lets go ” v “lets go” chants…it gets dueling “AJ, AJ “ v. “kill the cowboy, kill the cowboy”chants. And so I like the AMW as team that at least elicits heel chants but AMW just isn’t as good as a heel team as they were as face team. And the tag match was also just disappointing as it didn’t stand up next to the singles earlier in the night or to some of the more by the numbers AMW face matches. AJ was pretty good in this as he did an amazing job of making the catatonic look good. But just disappointing. Oh yeah and the Shanon Moore finish is stupid. I assume AJ and Moore have worked each other in Carolinas before and might be a good matchup...plus if the Prince of Punk starts reciting Anarchy in the UK lyrics I imagine this could be heated... but still seemed really out of place in terms of the story being told in the tag match. That kind of what the fuck isn't how you should end a show.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

I don't think Impactful is a real word. I'm sure impactfullest is not a real word.

Hey its night of squashes. Dull squashes is how you get people to watch your show on New Years???

Do I need to even mention the Jackie Gayda mic work?

So the story with Dusty as booker is that he's supposedly very smart at what sketches you do in front of live crowd and what you do as backstage pre taped segments. The studio wrestling fans turned on Dusty at one point and so he realized that he couldn't cut promos in front of the live audience so he did his promos as taped segments edited in. During the time when Dusty was booking for TNA a lot of the Jarrett stuff was pretaped and he seemed to have a good sense of what you do with Nash live in ring and what you do with him in pretaped segments. Dusty isn't in TNA anymore. Watching this episode I had a sense that the folks in charge have no idea as to what "Sports entertainment" segments should be done in ring and what should be done backstage. The whole "you like pop cultural references" v. "you wear goofy pants" Christian Jarrett verbal confrontation into "I'm tired of verbally abusing you I want to physcially abuse you" should have at least started backstage with the whole pull apart brawl spilling into the ring. The Dámore/ Mitchell aliance probably should have been a backstage angle...as wow was that underwhelming live. The Puerto Ricans attack Bullet segment on the other hand should not have been a backstage segment. That angle has been moving slow and deliberately and they need the big climax to be in ring otherwise it just came off as throw away. It needed a video package recapping angle leading to Konan finally agreeing to listen to hear Bullet out but only willing to hear him out ring...and then you do the whole Puerto Ricans attack with Bullet taking a big bump and Homicide forking him. You need to do that as a live moment. It had to be violent and in front of crowd. Because this is the act that is going to turn Apollo, Konan and Homicide heel. I don't have confidence in backstage segments turning a heel stable heel. The segment itself was good but they really hurt this angle by doing the"nefarious deed" backstage. It was just stupid move.

Christian as hype man!!! So the local Orlando crowd loves to listen to Christian on the mic, that doesn't mean you use him as your hype man. Zbysco comes out to make the tag match for later in the evening and then Christian runs out to tell the fans don't turn the dial you'll want to see that match??? Christian is what Flavor Flav to Zbysco's Chuck D? What the fuck. When WWF did their lightheavyweight matches they'd always bring out Sable or Tammy to watch at the announcing table because the WWF didn't trust that their fanbase would actually watch or care about those matches (they were probably right). But this is TNA and its the TNA fanbase and a match between two heavily pushed adversaries and a heavily pushed tag team. They don't trust that the match will sell itself instead they need to have Christian come out and say "hey I want to watch this match"...you should too." That's shitty. Borders on burrying the guys involved. Christian's doing the hypeman role with Mike Tenay (less Flav to D more Two Big MC to Hammer) on part two of the show may have been even more shitty although didn't feel like it burried anyone so less objectionable.

I used to be a giant asshole who loved starting fights at partys"hey this party is kind of mellow..some shit needs to happen". My favorite fight picking strategy behind just knocking into someone was being a smarmy asshole talking about thier clothes. I've started many a fight by going "Hey man nice sweater...you thought that out all day. ‘I'm going to wear this sweater out tonight. Yeah this will work for me yeah..nice sweater.’ Your mom buy that for you or you pick it out yourself? Huh? Leave you alone? Fuck me? I'm just complimenting your sweater. Wait wait you and your boys went shopping together and they said hey you should buy this sweater so you can wing better?". Aww. I miss being a jackass at parties, I'm goint to shed a tear to my lost youth. "Hey man thats really daring that vest with t shirt combo. I wouldn't have thought to do that. All retro Brian Austin Green. And such a nice vest...the Stussy label says quality in a vest...you thought that out all day. ‘I'm going to wear this vest out tonight. Yeah this will work for me yeah..nice vest.’ Bet the salesman told you the vest will get you the ladies. Can I try on the vest. C'mon man I want to try on the vest..Let me try it on.. What you're not gonna let me try on the vest. I don't think its working for you as well as it would for me. I put on the vest and shout 'It is I Kevin Sorbo Hercules the Legend Continues'and I bet the tang comes running. You could get some of the tang overflow". Guaranteed either punches will be thrown or the guy will live the rest of his life knowing he's a pussy. I've melowed out a bunch in my old age and don't do stupid stuff like that anymore but well it was New Years so I see a guy in sunglasses and well “Hey Mr. I wear my sunglasses at night…is that the light in here or are those blueblockers? Man let me try those on don’t turn the blade on the man with shades”…and so I was all willing to forgive Christian for his “you wear squirly white pants” fight instigating mic work...it was bad but on New Years forgiveable...you can start a fight saying just about anything on New Years. So I was all willing to let that mic work slide…But it’s New Years I saw a ton of pull apart brawls, saw pull aparts by what appeared to be Jonathan Taylor Thomas and his boys v. a Lawrence brother and his boys, saw a pull apart between what looked like drunk Magik the Gathering players, and the Jarrett, Brown, AMW v. Christian, Rhino, Dudleys pull apart brawl may have been the weakest shittiest pull apart I saw January 1st. Not willing to let that slide. That whole opening segment from Tenay's announcement through to brawl SUCKED~!!! But even if Tenay had announced something cool like Too Cold Scorpio or Choshu or Jeff Farmer instead. And even if the Jarrett v. Christian mic work was actually inspired. That brawl was some weak shit.

We should mention the length of it. I Tivo'd the show and fast forwarded through it on the second viewing. It went on for about five minutes, chockablock with wrestling monologue cliches. The best logical payoff was to use her to bring in Haas, and now that's not very likely. Is this supposed to be our first main-event women's feud, Jackie and Gail? I can't see Gayda improving that much in the downtime no matter how much Haas might have trained her. Gail will kill her with that Perpendiuclar Octopus submission.

Watching the crowd react to Brown, I can't believe they turned him heel. His is a natural all-ages face gimmick.

So you were that type of guy. My friends and I used to call you all closet homosexuals. Wonder if we were right.

Monty Brown creeps me out... when he sniffs the camera, I feel like I am watching something I shouldn't be.

Konan has three members total in his stable and it appears like it's only Kip and BJ at this point so who is the third member Killings, Bullet Bob or someone else? I'm not sure how I feel about seeig Bob wrestle these days. Is Killings going to start his own stable? Is this a rehash of the NoD, DoA, and Gen X fued?

Anyway, I thought that segment was done well and I'm actually curious about what will happen next.

Cool I was worried when writting that that it wouldn't come off that way.

As really that was the secret.

You're not going to start a fight by just walking up to someone and verbally insulting his clothes...the obvious response is just to insult back.

Just shoving someone can get a "Hey man...calm down what's up".

But to walk up to someone and repeatedly sarcastically compliment their clothing is especially queenish and will trigger the queen inside every man to loose it.

It's playing to the closet.

----------------------------------------

Five minutes?
Holy shit.

Actually the best possible use of her is as Raven's girlfriend. She facially looks like Perry Saturn. It would make sense.

-----------------------------------

Smart move would be to have Killings do an in ring promo next episode:

"You know I wasn't gonna be a part of all this. Crew was done. Family was over as far as I could tell and I was on my own. But after what Konan did to Bob..I mean he let you in his home. He let us all in his home. Kip here ain't blood of him but he's adopted the name James. I ain't blood of his neither but until he's out of the hospital..I too am gonna take the James name. And Ron The Truth James is gonna beat a mudhle in you in his name"

I guess you could do the Flair goes to Blackjack's ranch angle and have BG recruit a Fuller to fill out the trio...but I don't think thats an angle that they'de be able to explain.

Fuerza repays the blood debt.

You could also just bring in any of the other Armstrongs to fill out the trios feud.

In the best of all possible worlds you eventually bring in an older Puerto Rican (Pierroth or Gypsy Joe) to set up in 8 man brawls opposite Bullet.

Monty just bores me. I don't like his promos and his ring work is too pedestrian for me. I don't believe I've seen him in anything but squashes to be fair though so he may be amazing in a real match.

He's a short guy with a tackle as a finisher.
So a more charismatic Rhino.
