Week 17 is over and another regular season is in the books. Must mean it's time to fire some coaches! And a lot of them went down, including:

Dom Capers (Houston): Not surprised here. When they draft Reggie Bush, they'll want to hit the reset button. But I still maintain the notion that Reggie Bush will be a total bust with that shitty Texans offensive line. This is where NFL coaches will go to die. A natural destination for...

Mike Tice (Minnesota): This was kind of like putting down Old Yeller. He put up a good year after everything, but if he had stayed, it would just be more talk next year of firing him. Better to put him out of his misery now. He'll probably end up with Houston.

Dick Vermeil (Kansas City): Happily retired. Had a great career. But who could possibly follow up his act?

Mike Martz (St. Louis): Finally! There was talk of Martz leaving a long time ago and things were never the same since he and Kurt Warner bitterly parted ways. The Rams need a fresh start. It'd be funny to see him once again succeed Dick Vermeil by going to Kansas City.

Mike Sherman (Green Bay): This will cement Bret Favre's retirement, as he's said on many occasions that if Sherman's out, he's out.

Jim Haslett (New Orleans): The most unfair of the firings, Jim Haslett tried his damndest to make a diamond out of a turd, but this was an impossible task after everything that happened. From "home games" in New York to the owner trying to relocate the team on a daily basis, this season was NOT Jim Haslett's fault and he should have been given one more chance to turn things around, with a healthy Deuce McAllister and possibly even with Matt Leinart at QB. Haslett will be fine, as a former Coach of the Year can find work anywhere, most likely coaching a college team.

Please show me one quote with this. No paraphrasing, one reliable quote.

It hasn't been said. What Favre HAS said is that at this point in his career, he doesn't figure to want to learn another system. That's (1) his down-home, awe-shucks putting down of himself. He's more than intelligent enough to pick up another system in a heartbeat. and (2) as much support as he can give his head coach without saying "I like him".

I don't think Favre honestly knows if he'll be back or not, nor whether or not he wants to be back.

I think this was just the end of the rope for Haslett in NO. He hasn't taken the Saints to the playoffs since 2000, his first year as a head coach and has only one playoff win in six years with the team. The '01 and '02 were in contention until collapsing down the stretch to miss the playoffs and last year's team needed to win its last four just to get back to 8-8 for the year. This particular year wasn't Haslett's fault, but the rest were, and it was in the Saints best interest to make a change before next year.

Sherman should have been fired from Green Bay the day after the playoff loss to Philly in January '04 when he didn't go for it on 4th and less than 1 on a day when the Packers running game couldn't be stopped, and then his defense gave up 4th and 28. That game closed the Packers window of opportunity, as I still think they would have knocked off Carolina in the NFC Title Game. Don't know about winning the Super Bowl against New England, but, better than screwing up a shot to get there.
As for whether Favre stays or retires: The Packers went 4-12 with him. Can't do much worse without him. Before bringing up the injuries, they did get off to a horrible start prior to the rash of injuries, and their only win early in the season was against a Saints team that didn't know what time zone they were playing in on their itinerary. Speaking of the Saints, Haslett had become the second coming of Wayne Fontes in the 'How did he keep his job this year' category.

And you should really add Dick Jauron in Detroit - he's at best a candidate to get a contract for that job at this point.

Of course, that one playoff win makes him the Vince Lombardi of Saints' coaching history - heh. I wouldn't put it past Benson to fire Haslett to get some of his heat back after Tags cut off the San Antonio caravan at the pass.
