From Boston Wrestling (via WrestlingObserver):

WWE Smackdown!/Velocity Tapings
Tuesday, December 27th, 2005
Mohegan Sun Arena * Uncasville, CT

Dark:
Aaron "Idol" Stevens def. Scotty Too Hotty
Stevens came out with valets Beth and Shelly, finishing
off Scotty with a rocker dropper.

Velocity:
Simon Dean def. Brian Kendrick
Fast paced and sloppy in spots.

Paul Birchill def. "John" Xavier
Birchill had Regal in his corner and look impressive in
a match the crowd was into. Birchill won with a knee
to the back from the top rope.

Jamie Noble def. Paul London via submission
Noble got a fairly decent reaction coming out

Legion Of Doom def. FBI
At least it wasn't LOD vs the Dicks from Springfield
two weeks ago

Smackdown:
Show opens with Chris Benoit, Booker T, Sharmell and
Teddy Long (no sign of Palmer Cannon) arguing in Long's
office. Booker is injured and can't compete, claiming
he should therefore win the best of seven series and
become US Champion. Long said that wouldn't happen and
he'd forfeit that match if he didn't wrestle. Benoit
said he wanted to win in the ring so he'd let Booker
pick a replacement to wrestle for him. Long asked if
Benoit if he realized that he'd lose the series if he
lost to whoever Booker chose.

Matt Hardy def. JBL via CO
JBL appeared to have the match in hand until the
Boogeyman's music hit and he slowly crawled to the
ring. JBL bolted from the ring and was counted out,
knocking over Jillian Hall in the process. They fled
thru the crowd.

Orlando Jordan offered to wrestle Benoit for Booker T.
Sharmell said Benoit squashed him everytime they faced
each other and had no interest.

Mexicools def. The Dicks
Super Crazy pinned a Dick with a moonsault

Booker T found a sad looking Randy Orton in the locker
room and said the best way to get past losing to
Undertaker at the PPV was to go out and beat someone
like Benoit. Orton agreed.

In a horrible segment, Melina came to the ring with
what appeared to be her attorney. She claimed that she
was raped by Batista a few weeks ago (funny, the camera
recording the incident didn't make it appear to be a
sexual assault) and she was going to sue him. The
crowd was so sympathetic that they chanted "What?" and
boring with a segment that never seemed to end.

Legion of Doom made a New Year's resolution with a poem
from Heidenreich saying they'd win the belts in 2006,
all but foreshadowing what was to come.

Chris Benoit def. Randy Orton via DQ
Booker T and Sharmell joined Michael Cole and Tazz for
commentary. No sign of Bob Orton. Benoit and Orton
worked a very good match. As Benoit had Orton in the
crossface ready to tap, Sharmell dashed into the ring
and hit Benoit with a really bad crutch shot. As the
seven year old sitting next to me stated "why would she
get Orton DQ'd if Booker would lose another match in
the series?" Orton RKO'd Benoit after the match.

In an old school Mene Gene/Superstars interview segment
with a podium in the back of the arena with the fans
and the empty ring in the background, Sho Funaki
interviewed Kid Kash about winning the Cruiserweight
Championship. Nobody cared in the least. Kash ragged
on Funaki and gave him a ghostbuster on the podium.

Bobby Lashley squashed Sylvain

A Fit Finlay promo aired that is apparently leading to
his return to the ring

Josh Matthews interviewed Batista to see if he was
worried about Melina's lawsuit. He said to think about
who was making the claim and that he was focused on his
tag team title match.

MNM def. Batista & Rey Mysterio to win the tag team
titles
Very good tag team match with Mysterio doing the brunt
of the work and Batista getting his power spots in.
Mysterio hurrancanranaed Nitro from the top rope off
the apron to the floor. With the ref knocked out,
Batista was setting up Mercury for the demon bomb when
"Sexual Choclate" Mark Henry made his long awaited
return and KO'd Batista. When the ref was revived,
Mercury was covering Batista and MNM began another
reign as tag team champions. Most of the fans either
didn't know who Henry was or simply didn't care.

------

It's official. Benoit's an idiot.

Dave Batista vs. Mark Henry? I smell a buyrate....

Hey, it's great that they are putting youngsters like the Undertaker over in their PPV main events so they can showcase them on their TV shows....

Knoble/London! Hopefully this got some decent time. Kendrick/Dean should be fun, too, although London/Kendrick should be getting time on SD. MNM vs. London/Kendrick would be all kinds of fun.

SD looks pretty decent, although I could do without Mizark Henry.

So are we to assume the Heidenreich will turn on Animal, thus (thankfully) ending the "new" L.O.D.?

"Nobody cared in the least" or not, this is great. I've been pining for the return of these segments for years and years. They make everything look like a big deal and provide a more believable and effective avenue for some guys to get over than coming out and cutting an extended promo in the middle of the ring. Plus having Kid Kash do one of them automatically makes him one of the most-pushed cruiserweights ever. Kash looks a little like Owen Hart, by the way.

Incidentally, while not so blatantly offensive as some, this recap exemplifies much of what is stupid about people who write into wrestling sites with live reports. Most of the fans didn't know who Mark Henry was? I find that pretty hard to believe considering he returns constantly and was around on a regular basis as recently as, I guess, a year ago -- I really don't think wrestling is so popular these days that the majority of fans who are dedicated enough to go to live shows have started watching in the past year.

So, the Thank God he's back is for Fit Finlay?

I liked Fit in WCW, understand. 10 years ago, he was a fair midcarder. Decent workrate. I was hoping for Brock Lesnar with that tagline. Maybe Terry Taylor could lace up the boots again with Fit aand Michael PS Hayes.

Somebody else for Edge and Orton to squash.

Maybe we should watch the show before we trash it completely.
SD has a lot of injury problems (and hell, if they're dusting off Fit, they must be desperate---love him as I might.)
It doesn't sound like a bad show, prolly some decent matches.
And hey, war MNM for becoming 3 time tag champs.

Quite truly. Also good was this part:

Since Booker would also lose if they just stood there while Orton tapped out, it would seem that "Orton in the crossface ready to tap" is pretty much a lose/lose situation at that point. I don't think showing that his ability to grasp the obvious is just as poor as a seven-year-old's is quite what the author had in mind there.

Is the Smackdown roster THAT thin that it calls for the return of FIT FINLAY? Fit was a great hardcore wrestler, but it's been almost five years since he wrestled his last match. I can't see him going any longer than five minutes, nor can I see him making any kind of real impact.

You know, the scary thing about Mark Henry coming back isn't that he immediately got shot into the main event with Batista. It's the fact that Batista's still on a bad lat and we're possibly one more in-ring mishap away from World Champion Mark Henry.

In '04, the world wasn't ready for Lesnar-Holly. In '06, beware of Batista-Henry.

For some reason, I'm delighted that they followed up on the Melina/Batista shenanigans. WWE.com posted a transcript (wwe.com) of Melina's statement. It's not long at all.

He had a chance to go up 3-2, but then he chose (actually, insisted!) for Booker to find someone to wrestle for it. He could have taken an easy victory. I know they wanted to set it up as Benoit not wanting a cheap victory, but who WOULDN'T (in storyline terms) take that opportunity? Why does the WWE continue to book their babyfaces without common sense?

To continue booking Benoit as a guy who would rather settle everything in the ring.

It seems more obvious every week that the WWE intended to put the belt on Eddy that Sunday. The world title has been defended against Orton and now apparently Henry which is a giant swing in contender quality. Prior to this, the belt was secondary to the tag titles at the SD PPV. Is there anyone who wouldn't rather see Batista simply defend his title in squashes each week to both shorten his risk of injury in the ring and display him as a beast? I like Henry as a character much more than a performer and even less as a title contender.

Hmm. Sexual harassment instead of rape. At least they're smart enough to go that direction. Here's the writeup from the spoilers for that week:

Batista is shown backstage, and Melina enters and begins rubbing his shoulder and chest. She kisses him, and Batista grabs her on his lap, as she grinds him, and they make out as the screen fades to black.

Screen comes back and Melinda is shown fixing her hair, insinuating that Batista tapped that ass, and says something to the effect of asking Batista if the match with him and Rey tonight against her MNM is off. He laughs and tells her he's going to 'kill those guys.'

I *guess* they could make some case that there was a general "quid pro quo" arrangement reached off camera -- "sleep with me and I won't beat your boys tonight" -- and Melina's comment at the end is intending to confirm that. That, technically, could be sexual harassment, because she could claim that he demanded sex in exchange for furthering her career as manager of the tag champs. The fact that he reneged on that promise is moot.

Hmm, a storyline with a woman alledging sexual harassment and immediately being the one vilified. Seems like yet another example of WWE's writing being politically incorrect just for the sake of being "edgy".

I expect Batista to announce next week that Melina is a slut, and therefore it's OK.
