Just as I'd come to terms with G4TV.com being canceled...

Filter's gone too.

No more Net to Know.

No more John Walsh pissing people off at movie premieres.

No more Tech Toss Ups.

No more Diane Mizota every week.

Oh, but they're going to air Star Trek. Oh boy.

The thing that irritates me about everything G4 has done is that instead of finding their geek niche and combing it out (which they could have done by not gutting Tech TV and now keeping the focus on the games content) they are trying to become Spike TV junior. We should have seen this coming with the advent of the Whipset.

Edit: And as someone who was not (and still isn't) a G4 fan, I too will miss Diane Mizota...

Filter had pretty much run its course. I liked it when they actually talked about the games on their countdown, but then they added all that extra crap that just took up time.

I agree the whipset has got to go, but I kinda like the addition of Fastlane(I never watched the show and Tiffany Amber Thiesen does it for me ) and the Man Show.

I sense that Electric Playground is next in line. But I'll be damned if they cancel Icons. It is a great show if they would quit doing stupid stuff that has nothing to do with VGs!

I'd given up on them having anything interesting when I saw what they'd done to TechTV, but these moves just look completely aimless. Seriously, who, exactly, are they trying to appeal to?

I wonder how this will affect the Canadian G4TechTV.

Almost none as it's owned by an entirely different media conglomerate, the only thing they'd need to do is find something else to replace those runs of shows (well, that and try to keep Call for Help from completely falling apart).

As for Electric Playground, they can't REALLY cancel that, because Tallarico's company is the one who produces it (and Judgement Day). They could choose to stop airing it, but he'd end up turning around and selling it to someplace else.

What really disgusts me is the constant reairings of SEVEN YEAR OLD "Man Show" episodes. Which they paid a huge amount of money to buy from their own parent company's vaults.

But G4's success or failure rests entirely on X-Play and, to a lesser extent, Attack of the Show. Those are the two ratings champions, and where they go, so goes the network. As far as I know, AotS is actually still BUILDING audience over and above what the network had projected, even though they've lost a heavy amount of the creative staff and X-Play is still one of the highest rated shows on Digital Cable. Everybody knows the draw for X-Play is Webb and how long that holds out (either by fans losing interest, which seems to have been detured by the FHM thing or her leaving the show). Sesslar's a sharp guy and he's stuck it out for as long as he has, but there's only so many times you can rotate the eye candy next to him.

On the other hand, AotS' sucess is completely baffling. In a lot of ways it's like a show I would have put together back in my radio days. I think that might be its appeal, that it's really just accessible to pretty much anybody who flips to it in some way or another, but I kind of wonder how much juice a daily "Internet Pop Culture" show really has left in it.

I'm trying to care, but after what they did to TechTV, I'm hoping G4 dies a slow, miserable death.

Well seeing as Paul Allen was trying to sell it or shut it down, and Comcast was the only serious bidder, you're lucky to have what you got left.

I can understand recruiting Star Trek into the fold if they want to be a geek channel, but if they're switching to a Spike wannabe why mimic one of Spike's poorest judgments? Star Trek is NOT macho.

They don't need the Man Show, anime runs on the weirdest schedule... they just canceled most of their stalwarts and they've fired everyone else.

I'm a HUGE AOTS fan (but I started watching in April) and only in watching the best of specials have I gotten retroactively angry about Kevin Rose's firing.

Hell I know Geoff (Sp?) has that SpikeTV show and didn't exactly look hurt that his show got canceled but what about Diane?

Kristen Holt is probably working on her resume as we speak.

Speaking of which... the new co host thing on AOTS was never solved. If they're not going to bring back Nar WTF is wrong with bringing Tina or Diane on board?

Laura Foy update: Caught her on Cold Pizza while surfing. Odd how she didn't announce it on her blog.

Rose quit. The only reason he came on to G4 in the first place is because he was dating Sarah Lane at the time, and she was going to move down to L.A. to continue on with The Screen Savers (along with Rose's friend Dan Huard, who was shortly fired). Shortly thereafter, they broke up and he started doing his Internet Media projects (namely Systm and Digg, The Broken he'd been doing for a while), and once those got off the ground, so to speak, he moved back to San Fransisco.

Frankly, I'd love it if they kept Seanbaby on there, as he's the only one who really seemed to enjoy being on the show the whole time he was there. I know a lot of people don't like him, but Wil O'Neil would have been good too, because he really knows his stuff. Though my personal choices would have been either Webb or Chris Gore (just because Gore offered to buy me a drink if I see him again at the Wisconsin Film Festival).

However, I think they're just going to stick it out with Kevin, Sarah and Brendan. A fourth person at this point would kind of feel like a hanger on, hell Brendan hardly does anything as it is, all the segments are Kevin and Sarah's (and other than the "Dark Tip" they always were). So I wouldn't suggest that anything will ever be resolved from the whole "Host Search" debacle.

Rose was... that lucky bastard.

Out of all the wannabes, I liked Nar the best. He was the absolute geekiest so I identify with him and he looked like he was having fun. Superman codpiece test anyone?

Not to mention they stole Fresh Ink from him.

Sean Hart was alright too...

Gore doesn't need to be a regular on AOTS he needs G4 to give him The New Movie Show Part 2. Ben Stein, the huge gay black guy from E!, that show was awesome.

Seanbaby too, needs his own show or segment. I think throwing him as an extra on X-Play might work. Of course, I'd suggest throwing him on G4TV.com but you know how that ended.

Will was cool too, but that Mohawk HAS to go.

G4 is going down the same path MTV did. And that's not a good thing.

Like MTV, G4 was all about one thing. For MTV it was music videos, for G4 it was video games.

But then something happened. The powers that be wanted more ratings, so they change up the programing. MTV added a dance show, a game show, and later the first reality shows. G4 adds some tech shows, and now reruns of old network shows.

MTV fired some of it's popular VJ's at the time, becasue they didn't fit the new format of the nework. G4 fired a vast majority of it's origianl hosts becasue they don't fit the direction that the network is going.

I don't know anyone who watches MTV these days.

I used to watch G4 all the time, nowthe times I tune in are few and far between.

MTV at one point didn't care what was popular, and played the music they thought was good, and in turn it became what the viewers liked. G4 likewise didn't care what was popular, and showcased the games they thought were good, and in turn that became what the viewers liked.

Then the suits got a hold of both. Now they only show what's popular, not nessasaraly what's good.

Like MTV, G4 forgot what brought them to the dance and lost what edge it had.

I only watch two shows:

Call for Help strikes me as the most useful show on TV right now, and it provides me a regular dose of that dirty-cute blonde girl.

X-Play ... I don't know why the bits between the reviews are even there as they offer nothing but forced banter and flat line-reading. Maybe Morgan would be more interesting if she didn't present herself as disdainfully earning a paycheck. But the review segments are exactly what I need: short, casual, balanced, and clear.

I tried Cinematech a few times, but it seems like just a half-hour screensaver.

The only shows I watched on TechTV were X-Play and Unscrewed ... X-Play is still around (and is still funny, I say!) so I'll continue to watch G4 for that; everything else on that network can end up in the shitter, as far as I'm concerned.

Braniac is really good, although it is a British replay and not original to them.
