Simple question from a non-Hockey fan.
Since they added shootouts, how can their be ties? At first I assumed that they limited the number of shots in a shootout, but last Saturday night they showed highlights on Sportscenter of a game that was won on the 30th or so shot! So how the hell do they tie if they just keep shooting till someone makes and someone misses?

They don't. The 3rd number you probably saw in the standings isn't for ties, it's for overtime losses. The league gives two points for a win (in regulation, overtime, or by shootout), one point for an overtime (including shootout) loss, and zero points for a regulation loss.
