World Classic calls Barry 'U.S.' Bonds (San Fransisco Chronicle)

Well, he certainly is hellbent now on proving that he's clean he'll be clean by the spring. The exhibition game March 5th against the Giants should be interesting.

Regardless of my pathetic cynicism, I'm really looking forward to the Classic.

Bonds on Team USA provides motivation to root against them.
I completely abhor the idea of this competition. Pitchers throwing all out in early March has disaster written all over it. Bad enough if a player goes down in spring training to screw up a season, worse if they do it in this competition. Spring Training does serve some purpose in developing clubhouse chemistry as well. Why have teammates competing with each other when it doesn't do any good in trying to win a World Series?
George Steinbrenner was correct to oppose this tournament, and I wouldn't blame him if he prohibited his players from competing. Not worth letting some Cuban pitcher, or Pedro Martinez, throw at Jeter. Let Pedro, or the Cuban pitcher, headhunt David Wright instead. And yes, I can definitely see Pedro throwing at a major league teammate in this competition.

The tournament was agreed to by the MLB owners. None of them can stop his players from playing or even pressure them not to play.

I'm sure the Giants don't want Bonds to risk torpedoing another season. And the Dodgers won't be happy with Gagne's gamble either, but they can't do anything to stop it.

And all of the weight loss will be from his head, oddly enough.
