Tonight we got the Ana Lucia back-story taking some of the edge of her character with a little sympathy. It was pretty obvious she was a cop, but now we know a little more about why she is so edgy.

Did it work for you? It did for me a little. She was already a little quick with the trigger before the island, considering they lost half their party she was a little more paranoid, add some voices and Shannon was pretty whacked out running through the woods anyway so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Although we learned she's also a cold blooded killer too.

So where does the island go from here? There's been a lot of build up, but little real action other than the tail of the plane showing up and the Shannon killing ... I think we're on the verge of something big going down.

Um, yes.

I don't know if this episode was supposed to continue to soften up her character as you suggested, but for me, this episode cemented her role as uber-heel. When she told her mom that she wouldn't ID the guy, I just KNEW she was setting him up for a cold-blooded killing later. Funny, when Sawyer killed his victim, I didn't think any worse of him. But for some reason, this episode convinced me that there was nothing good about Ana Lucia.

As for the rest of the episode, I enjoyed it (as always). I particularly enjoyed the final scene where everyone was reunited. I've long been waiting for the Bernard-Rose reunion, and they totally paid it off. By far the most emotional moment for me in the series, and potentially the best overall moment.

Meanwhile, the teaser for the next episode (is it next week?) left me with mixed feelings. Obviously I want to see what's happening with Sawyer, but I got the feeling he did something not-so-cool to/with Kate in the hatch when he woke up. I guess only time will tell.

I think the difference with Sawyer is that Sawyer's always had an anti-authoritarian air to him (probably forged by the loss of his parents so early.) Ana Lucia is a cop, and for as much as she tries to maintain order on the island, she went against the premise of law and order (which she was supposed to uphold, no less), by explicitly denying the police their chance to deal with the situation and instead handling it on her own.

Regarding Ana Lucia, though, I'm more interested how she got out of a murder conviction. Especially since she's now on the record as having said that that guy wasn't the guy that shot her. I can only guess that her mother helped her cover up whatever evidence existed and since the guy was an alleged cop killer no one else in the force cared. Or maybe she's in Australia because she's also running from the law?

It was nice to see everyone reunited, but Vincent running to Michael was sorta funny. I also found it slightly strange that the dog would have bonded with Michael given that he's only known him maybe a week more than anyone else on the island.

Everyone on the beach seemed so happy to see Jin again, did they forget why he went out, or did word of the bottle spread amongst everyone more than was shown?

The looks on Hurley and Charlie's faces when Jack showed up was awesome. Here's another Jack-Kate scene...

I look forward to seeing Echo integrate into the group of survivors. He and Locke already look like things will get interesting.

Despite what happened with Jin before, I can totally see everyone being ecstatic to see him again just to know he's safe. Same with Michael and....well, maybe not Sawyer.

I think now Lost will get back to feeling like Lost again; the 'brand extension' of the other castaways is over, so now we can get back to the one main group again, with Eko, Libby and Ana Lucia melding into the mix.

She said they never found him. I'm sure the LAPD didn't go out looking for the guy real hard, considering everything.

Wow now I know she was ALWAYS a bitch who made poor choices. Way to win me over fellas!

Seriously, she's like the Brady cousin times twelve.

I hope Sayid fuckin goes Lord Vader on her ass, is redeemed, lives, and everyone forgives him because they hate her as much as I do.

The Eko/Locke first impression made the night for me. It looked like two evenly matched poker players (who enjoy even matches) sizing each other up and then realizing their equality only to become the best of pals. [/run on sentence]

Agreed. That was definitely a highlight, as was (as another poster pointed out) the Bernard/Rose reunion. That one definitely illicited an "awwww" from me.

I get the feeling that we're going to see Sawyer and Kate finally submit to the romantic tension, and Jack (perhaps on a rebound from his feelings for Kate) end up involved romantically, or very close to it, with Ana Lucia.

I'm still reserving judgment for the Ana Lucia character, who obviously went through something very traumatic that threw her all topsy-turvy. Sure, killing the guy in cold blood wasn't cool, but it's not like he was an innocent bystander or anything.

As for something big happening...well, instead of two groups of survivors on the island, now they're all consolidated. I almost think it's more detrimental, since they're all in a central location now to be picked off. It should get real interesting the next few weeks.

I doubt that Ana Lucia would be stupid enough to shoot the guy with her service weapon and just leave the body there. And why does there have to be a cover up? I'm quite certain it wouldn't have been all that hard for her to get her hands on an untraceable weapon, and nobody is going to mourn some scumbag drug dealer. Also, if she were in Australia running from the law, it would've been awfully silly of her to get on a flight back to Los Angeles...

I don't doubt that she wouldn't have tried to cover her tracks, but then again, its always possible that she shot him in such a blind rage that she didn't think to cover her tracks. Still, weren't there any witnesses that would place her there? Security cameras? I just don't like the thought of her being able to get away with such a cold-blooded murder so cleanly, even if the cops wouldn't be too concerned with tracking him down.

Happens every day, twice on Sunday. Do you have any idea how many murders are solved? It's a relatively low percentage. I think it's under 70% nationally - and you must know that a very high percentage of those are solved at the Crime Scene cause the killer still holds the smoking gun (or other weapon) in their hand. Because they're family members. The ones that are left - well, let's just say Without a Trace and CSI are a touch more successful than your local PD. My last year on the PD we only had 5 total murders, 4 were family, once wasn't and it was unsolved - to this day, as far as I know.

Everything Ana Lucia did was premeditated...she knew what she was going to do when she refused to ID him. She was waiting for him and knew enough to make sure nobody was around. And really now, it probably wouldn't have been all that hard for her to find him someplace isolated...

I don't doubt that its possible that she'll be able to get away with the murder, especially if she planned it out carefully enough to make sure that there's no evidence about it, I still find it hard to believe that someone in the force won't find his body, realize that this is guy that confessed to shooting Officer Cortez, and then knowing her crazed state of late, put two and two together and figure out she did it. Maybe whoever does that won't have enough evidence to arrest her, but, from a fictional standpoint, I can't imagine her crime going completely unnoticed.

There's also the distinct possibility that she was never arrested because she "disappeared" herself the next morning. Australia seems like a good place to hide out...

Do we know how it's been between the shooting and the crash?

There are so many reasons for her to come back, from something related to the case to her mother's death.

In the bar scene right before the shooting, "Outside" by Staind was playing, which if I recall correctly came out in late 2000, right? Assuming the crash was in September of 04, that means it couldn't have been more than four years ago.

Wow, did everyone miss the fact that she likely killed the guy not just because he shot her four times, but also because she was pregnant??? Safe to guess that because of getting shot, she lost her baby. While it doesn't make it right, it makes it understandable.

And I will go along with StingArmy to chalking up the Bernard/Rose reunion as the show's best moment, right behind anything Hurley says. My wife, however, will only rest once the fate of Jack's marriage to Sarah is resolved.

Which is why that I think a good part of this character being unlikable is the fault of the actress. Even when she uttered this line, it just didn't sound believable. It was almost as if she was making it up to justify her own actions. I'm sure that wasn't what the writers were shooting for, but that's how it came across to me. And because of such a poor delivery, it was easily forgettable.
