Fiction: Europe Central by William T. Vollmann. Non-fiction: The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. Poetry: Migration: New and Selected Poems by W.S. Merwin.
The Merwin is amazing, and the Didion is a heart-breaker. I haven't read the Vollmann, but I plan to.
And in Canada, the Governor General's Literary Awards have been announced:
Fiction: A Perfect night to Go to China by David Gilmour. Non-fiction: The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant. Poetry - Processional by Anne Compton.
Vaillant was a good choice, but the fiction and poetry winners are disappointing. IMHO, the fiction award should have gone to Joseph Boyden for Three Day Road, and the poetry award should have gone to Over the Roofs of the World by Olive Senoir (this is, of the books that were nominated).
