| #1 Posted on 15.11.05 0931.16 Reposted on: 15.11.12 0931.45 | As the guy who started THIS THREAD it pains me to say this, but the 360... probably not this Christmas.
Which is sad really. My X-Box will cost $80 to fix, and renewing my Live will be another $60 or so.
Not to mention the $400 version of the 360 will include the DVD remote (which I paid for separately for my X-Box) and include a Live subscription.
So why not drop the extra $260 and get it our of the way? Oh I was going to, but then...
THIS. The list of backwards compatible games.
Now granted this is being updated as we speak but at first glance I have only half of my games available.
I have very few games but they're pretty diverse in genre and developer but still only half.
My games (Bold where compatible) ---------------------------------------- Halo 2 Jet Set Radio Future Karaoke Revolution KOTOR KOTOR 2 Mech Assault NBA 2K3 Sega GT World Series of Poker
So let me get this straight... I drop $400 on a new system, thus not being able to afford any new games, losing my saves and probably the expansions I bought for Karaoke Revolution (not to mention not being able to play the new Karaoke Game if I buy it) and my options are watching DVDs, Halo 2, and motor cycle racing?
Uh... no.
Once a generation every console does something really stupid. Saturn (bitch to program for) Playstation (hello load times) Dreamcast (can't play DVDs) Jaguar (existing) 64 (cartridges are all you need!) PS2 (buy the multitap/modem... but we don't have an online network really) Gamecube (What does "online" mean?) X-Box (any wrestling game released/buy the DVD remote/Wrestlemania XXI)
And now this. Buy a 360, and play old X-Box games. Just make sure they're shooters. Or recent sports games. Or awful platformers. Or RPGs. Good ones, but ones that take 60 hours to beat. Or utter crap; Fuzion Frenzy I'm looking in YOUR direction.
But pick up and play? Party games?
Well at least they don't support XXI. But then again, neither did the original X-Box without a friggin patch. Promote this thread! | | EddieBurkett

Ouch!
I'll just add that I thought Fuzion Frenzy was a great party game. With the exception of the actual Frenzy itself (What's the point of winning the minigames if you can just gank other people's points at the end?) all the minigames were quite fun to play. | J. Kyle

But the sad fact is if they don't make my other games playable I'll need another X-Box. Which after the 360, may not be all that more than $80. But... paying the $80 gives me another year of warranty. And I can return to my plan of waiting for the Revolution price drop.
As for must have games, the only ones I can really think of are Gun and THAW. But both those aren't much of a step up from their regular X-Box counterparts.

Well it's no more bogus than the PS2's memory card/controller/multitap compatibility mess.
And as far as all the press releases have said, my saved games are doomed. Of course, if I send in the ol' X for repair, my saved games are not guaranteed to come back.

Which I think is a shame, since it has no owner mode and no mini-camp stuff. I'd much rather play the real version, not a stripped down port for a new system. | Cerebus

I learned my lesson. After buying a Dreamcast morning of launch and an XBox at MIDNIGHT launch, and then seeing both of them significantly price drop in less than 6 months, well, patience pays off.
Get the premium system down to 300 bucks and the core down to 200-250, then you're talking. I want this system to succeed since the XBox was my system of choice for the current generation, but at the same time I sure as hell won't show blind loyalty to a company who is screwing up big time.
There are zero launch titles that grab me here, and the fact that there has been next to NO hype for Perfect Dark Zero (their supposed system-selling monster) with the console out in a week is troublesome. PGR3 is apparently just PGR2 with nicer graphics. NBA2k6 seems to be almost exactly the same as the XBox/PS2 versions aside from the player models. EA offerings like Madden and Tiger Woods actually removed features present in the current console versions. Amped was never that great of a series and it looks to continue the tradition here. Call of Duty 2 seems ok, but it's still a PC port and WWII games have been done to death. King Kong sucked ass (anyone else played the demo?). We fill it out with Kameo (supposedly decent, but not something to start off the console with a bang) and some other racers that will likely just get buried under PGR3 (NFS Most Wanted, Ridge Racer 6). Not the most exciting lineup in the world. Plenty of games, but where's their Super Mario Bros.? Their Soul Calibur? Their Halo?
Oh, not until the PS3 comes out. How nice.
Yeah, the games look great...if you have an HDTV. Those are still far too expensive for most consumers to get the most out of this system. Asking the consumer to drop 400 bucks for the system, 50-60 bucks for just one game, AND have a fast broadband connection/router, AND have an HDTV to "see the games properly" is really pushing it. God bless you if you can afford it, but I have no problem waiting until the price is reasonable...hell, I still have Forza Motorsport and MGS2 Substance unopened on my shelf of XBox games. | Jaguar

Back on topic for a moment. If this is a sign that all or most of the X-Bok Super Swank Edition kits are defective, talk about bad PR. If someone is already committed to getting one despite the reported shortages and the $300+ price tag, I would think that it would take more than a few bad consoles to scare you off. Even if Kameo is the greatest game ever made, I would have to think more people are buying it now just to be able to say "I have a 360!!!" as opposed to actually enjoying the gameplay/graphics, and to that extent, MS could ship them a hollowed out plastic shell and it would suffice for the time being. | vsp

Tempest 2000 remains a perfectly good justification for owning a Jaguar. Very little that Jeff Minter touches isn't gold (apart from farm animals, but Minter's personality quirks are fodder for some other thread).
I've never been an advocate of early console adoption, as prices are high and games are generally iffy until the second or third wave arrives. (My exception that proves the rule is the Dreamcast, which had a fairly strong launch but then had little else for the next 6-8 months.) |
