If you don't already have TiVo, but you are thinking about getting one, there is a referral program and I'd love to work with you to get you set up.
Here are a few of the reasons that I love my TiVo
* TiVo to go. You can now transfer recordings off of the TiVo to play back on up to 10 different items including laptops, PCs, other TiVos in your home, etc. Plus, you can playback photos and MP3 files that you share off of your home PC. I've got mine running through my 5.1 amp and it does a really good job of making even the 128 mp3s sound pretty good.
* You can move video files off of your TiVo to a computer on your home network. If you have a 40 hour TiVo like I do, that means that you have 40 hours of stuff to watch right now, with your long term storage limited by how much free hard drive space you have at home on your network. Considering I have the terabyte of drives from the old web server, that's quite a bit for me 
* Galleon. Holy cow, this is a pretty cool app. Galleon allows you to playback Shoutcast streams on your TV, check movies in your local area, get a weather report, and more. This is possible with the HME enabled on your home network if you have a USB adaptor.
* More! I am going to try to write some custom apps to see if I can do it. It looks like I just need to use java to do this. Luckily, I know a little java.
Anyway, there is a deal right now where you can get a 40 hour box for $49 after $150 back. You need to commit to a one year service agreement at around $14 / mo., but I think it is well worth it. Considering that's the price of a cable movie channel, or a ticket to a movie + a popcorn... i get way more value out of the TiVo.

TiVO service is available in Canada......but you gotta get it imported. (tivo.com)
HOWEVER....I am heading to the USA in December, so if you get back to me, we'll see what we can do. I'll be located in Winnipeg in 2006.

I'm just not sure if I would use it enough to justify the expense. By my math $12.95 / month + $49.99 for the unit is $205.39 in the first year. On the other hand, that is only about $4 / week. Taping every syndicated Seinfeld episode is almost worth that. If PBS still showed Red Dwarf or if I had BBC America so I could tape Monty Python I would be sold. Still, it's something to consider.

For those of you who don't have an auto comercial skip, like me, and find yourselves fast forwarding too far all the time here is a nice easter egg.

you should hear three dings.
Now the button on your remote that takes you to the next time line, or to the start or end of a program, will give you a 30 second skip.
Its great for getting through comercials faster, or if you are like me and watch alot of football, there is ~30seconds between snaps when the team huddles. Just keep hitting the button and see nothing but game play.

Yes, it can be moved back and forth from the HD to the TiVo. It's quite handy.
You can start watching it on your TV within 20-30 seconds, but if you want to FF you have to let more of it buffer.
If you get a USB adaptor, make sure you get 100 base if you can. I think mine is only 10baseT and it is pretty slow - 8 minutes or so to move a 30 minute show. It's not really that bad though, after you get past the first commercial break if you FF you are fine. You just can't skip right to 3/4 of the way through at the very beginning, so it might be a pain if you were storing something like RAW and wanted to skip a lot of craptacular early stuff. | vsp
