I could have sworn it was way earlier. I was in high school when this happened and the way news was back then, I heard about the disaster when Lightfoot's song was released. I even saved file video of earlier coverage of that sinking...somewhere 'round here... On a lighter note, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is a GREAT karaoke song to do to get under your friends-who-wanna-sing-dammit's skin...'cause it's longer than an Iron Butterfly drum solo.
