The Llakor Project - Year Two Chapter Nine: This is Lazarus
“Hello”
“This is Lazarus from Kansas City. I need to speak to a Michael Blade.”
“How interesting. Michael is not here right now, but he will be back soon. But I have never heard him speak of a Lazarus, either from Kansas City or anywhere else.”
“That may be because Lazarus is my middle name.”
“I see. And your first name is?”
“’When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.’”
“Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. I admire your erudition, if not the relevance of your quotation.”
“My apologies. I was referring to the fact that my first name was the name of my first life. My new name is the name of my middle life.”
“I see. You are a philosopher. I knew an Irish man who was a philosopher.”
“All the Irish are either philosophers or sober.”
“AH! Now that is an excellent quotation. Was that Oscar Wilde?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Who said it then?”
“Me. Just now.”
“I see. Interesting. Mr. Lazarus, you intrigue me. Few people do more than bore me. Still, I have heavy business to undertake. If you will excuse me, I will tell my nephew Michael, that a Mr. Lazarus from Kansas City is looking for him. He can call you back at the number that you are calling from?”
“For the next twenty-four hours.”
“Very well. I bid you a good day on your road to your personal Damascus, Mr. Lazarus.”
“Good day, Uncle.”
