Yet another sign that at least some NFL teams are beginning to recognize that selfish players can do more harm than good regardless of how talented they may be. Apparently the maximum suspension in this type of situation is four games. However, I can only assume that you can pay a guy to stay home. If the Eagles wanted to do that, there'd have to be something else other than "conduct detrimental to the team," otherwise his agent and the player's union will be all over the team asking why they don't want to play him. Because if he's healthy and he's served the agreed upon suspension for the infraction, what reason can the team present? I suppose it might fly if TO and the team came to a mutual understanding that he wouldn't play for x amount of time with pay, but the chances of that happening are practically nil. Otherwise all that's left is to dress him on game day and leave him on the sidelines as a DNP-CD.

| #5 Posted on 6.11.05 1421.39 Reposted on: 6.11.12 1422.03 | Let me first say that ESPN's "All TO! All the time!" activities this week have annoyed the heck of me and it's not so good how they made themselves the story by perhaps airing things out of context in the ESPN.com interview (to the point where they had to spend a second day showing the whole interview to deflect blame.)
However, this story on ESPN.com right now - I actually want to know a lot more about.
It might not have been just Terrell Owens' fighting words that led to his suspension from the Eagles.
It seems a fistfight also contributed to his being banished indefinitely.
A team source told Mortensen that Douglas, whose post with the Eagles he re-titled "bad-ass-ador," entered the team's training room Wednesday and announced "I know there are people in here faking injuries." The comment apparently led to the scrum between Owens and Douglas.
One source told the Times the fight "was like WWE Smackdown." Another source told the paper both Douglas and Owens threw at least two punches before Owens challenged quarterback Donovan McNabb and then everyone else in the room, saying "You want some? Anyone else want some?"
There's also a good Team Meeting story in there.
CBS is saying TO is only Inactive and not suspended today; I'm actually starting to hope he plays, just because we might see the first fist fight between teammates during a game.

Gotta agree here, as a Niner fan I enjoyed his antics. Even when he was being a jerk during his last year as a Niner I'd look back to those moments.
However, this season I realized T.O. is a dick. How the hell can you start a bitter verbal media assault on Jeff Garcia or Mcnabb? Both of these QB's rank pretty close to the top of the list as far as character goes. Now he wants Favre? As much as I hate/respect Favre I wouldn't wish that on him.

But Chris Mortenson on the Dan Patrick show today said he was expecting that the Eagles may release Owens after he had served his suspension. This sounds awesome, because they wouldn't have to pay him (as long as he was picked up by someone else), and he would be subject to waivers. Mort said if he was on waivers, someone would probably pick TO up. He gave about a half dozen teams who might be interested in him if available (they discussed Miami, Green Bay, Denver, Seattle, Oakland, Washington, and even New England).

This is going to be the most fascinating part of all of this, what team is going to try to roll the dice next season and take the potential (may, certain) poison pill that is TO.
If there is one player that is insane enough, disruptive enough, and clearly selfish enough to demolish even the most harmonious locker rooms (like New England) it is TO, and the one-two punch of TO and Drew Rosenhaus.
Philly was a pretty cohesive group before TO got there, which is why Andy Reid thought he could take the chance with TO. He an established Alpha Dog in place in McNabb, and other leaders like Brian Dawkins. And now we see how it has played out, one Super Bowl appearance and now one likely lost season. Was it worth it is an interesting question.
That said, two fascinating scenarios emerge:
- TO is released after the 4-game suspension. This is unlikely, given that it will cost the Eagles just $1M to pay TO the rest of the season, and a) the Eagles surely don't want him going somewhere else to hurt them this season, and b) enough has happened now to the organization that I'm betting there is enough spite to "Keyshawn" him and deactivate him.
- TO is "Keyshawned" and then let go (or traded, which is extremely unlikely given the circumstances) before the 3/1/06 "roster bonus" is due. Then the fun starts.
A team that is close, and needs one big playmaker on offense to get them to a Super Bowl NEXT YEAR would have to be intrigued at taking on Owens. What will play out for the '06 season is no doubt like the '04 season - TO will be on his best behavior, we'll get a couple dozen "TO is a changed man" articles from ESPN (all brought to us by Michael Irvin), TO will put up big-to-huge numbers and generally toe the line. For 2006, this will be a good gamble for a few teams, and they will likely have few bidders for TO, so he can be had for maybe $.70 on the dollar (is this scenario sounding familiar?). Of the teams listed above, Seattle and Denver seem like the best fit, and can make the deal with the devil. After all, Super Bowl banners fly forever.
Then, should TO's team somehow win the Super Bowl or exceeds their pre-TO expectations (like TO taking Seattle to the Super Bowl), all hell will break loose. With TO's advancing age for a WR (Terrell will turn 33 in December of the 2006 season) and the corresponding diminishing of the likelihood of more big TO seasons, TO will look for that last big payday, and it will make this season with the Eagles-TO saga look like Hines Ward's negotiations with the Steelers this past offseason.
Of course, the most obvious outcome is that has there ever been a player (except perhaps Randy Moss) more meant to be a Raider than Terrell Owens? | Jaguar

Quick answer: no. They didn't win the Superbowl. I'm not saying it's all his fault they lost the Superbowl last year, but they brought him in knowing full well what his attitude and demeanor was. They weren't signing him because they felt he was a prospect for the future they could build on, or because he'd be great for team chemistry, they signed him because it was the one single component they felt was missing for a championship team. Turns out, there was more to it than that, and now they're staring down the barrel of .500. So no, it wasn't worth it.

I refer you back to what I just wrote, since I sort of (unintentionally) addressed that, too. The Eagles did it, and it cost them dearly this season. I don't think anybody that close to a Superbowl is going to make that mistake again. I think the more likely scenario would be him going to a team that, for now, is just looking to put people in seats.

| #18 Posted on 8.11.05 1238.21 Reposted on: 8.11.12 1238.39 | The thing is though, that last season, for all intents and purposes, T.O. served his purpose. Sure, the Eagles didn't win the SuperBowl, but that was due mostly to the fact that the Patriots last season were so unbelievably superior. Even if McNabb had been able to run a hurry-up offense down the field, I don't doubt that the Patriots would have still stopped the drive or scored again to still win the game. The Patriots were the best team last season, and I don't know if anyone will rival that team for anytime to come.
Regardless, though, the two big improvements that got Philly to the Superbowl were T.O. finally giving McNabb a legitimate deep threat weapon and Trotter's return leading to Philly's sudden ability to stop the run. Specifically on offense, TO, combined with McNabb's mobility and Westbrook's versatility meant that opposing defenses had three threats to prepare for. What that did was allow the Eagles to go on the 12-1 run to get home field advantage so they could sit everyone and throw away the last two games of the season in preparation for the playoffs. Without TO during the season, that run becomes questionable. It wasn't that long ago that Westbrook got injured in the last game of the regular season resulting in his loss for the playoffs. I'm sure Reid didn't want to face that situation again, and TO gave him the opportunity to avoid that.
This season, with the struggling defense and offense, TO isn't enough to guarantee a victory for the team anymore. There are too many problems for one reciever to alleve, and given that he's causing enough problems of his own, it makes sense that the Eagles would ditch him. I wonder if part of the reason is that McNabb was starting to look rather mobile again during the Washington game. If McNabb's potency as a weapon can return, the Eagles might still be decent enough to win a few games. However, the bigger issue is that the defense needs to return to form. Plus, the loss of Akers thus far has had an impact in its own right. There's too much going on for TO to make that big a difference. So it makes sense they would let him go.

It was not worth it, but it was not a failure either. They got to the Super Bowl and ran into a juggernaut.
But T.O. said he WANTED to be in Philly. He bitched and moaned about being traded to Baltimore. He and McNabb were buddies. He loved the West Coast offense.
It wasn't until after he came back on that broke ankle and had a great Super Bowl that his usual dick self reimerged. Some agents put thoughts in client heads.
