The Llakor Project - Year Two
Chapter Five: The Man Who Wasn’t There

“I am not sure that I would worry too much for our ‘Pauvre Detective Gideon’”

“Why is that Daniel?”

“The less evidence that he finds to lead him to the bombers, the more that he knows about them. There are only a very few people in the world who could have planned that bombing mission. To plan it and to leave evidence, this narrows down your search. To plan it and leave little evidence, this narrows down your search even more. To plan it, to execute it and to leave no evidence, well your list of names for that is slim indeed.

Our Gideon is looking for men who have no shadow, who leave no traces. But a man with no shadow is an unusual man and will eventually become noticed. Like a naked man in a crowd.”

“Even the invisible man leaves traces of being there.”

“Exactly. ‘There was a man who wasn’t there on the stair the other day. He was back again today. I wish, I wish he would go away.’ Except of course, these men won’t be going anywhere. Like sharks, they have tasted blood and I fear that they will circle these feeding grounds until they are caught.”

“It seems like an odd paradox, Daniel. Are you saying that the best way to stay hidden would be to make some mistakes?”

“You have to make the right mistakes. Mistakes that don’t lead the police back to you, but at the same time that lull the suspicion of the police. The better that you are, the better that you inspire the police to be.”

“Just a second, je prends la telephone.”

“All right.”

“Daniel, it is the front desk. Your car is ready.”

“Ah parfait. Au revoir, ma cherie. I have to see a man about a boat.”

“Au revoir, Daniel. Bonne chance. How do you say it? Good hunting.”

“Merci. Good hunting indeed.”
