Wait. Did Meltzer and Keller say the contract is expiring? Or did they say the contract is expiring and WWE is planning to lowball Benoit like they did Christian? It's the last part that's causing all the speculation.

I'm not moving to Florida - besides, I'm only slightly LESS fat than Scott D'Amore.

This thread is stupid because there's no story here - just lame speculation. If anything, it looks like someone might be hoping that a "leak" would generate just enough Internet buzz that it might help any potential bargaining position the next time discussions happen...or it would help the WWE decide to make one decision because it goes against "what the Internet thinks." I, as a member of "the Internet" would sure hate to be used like that, especially as it appears to have been proven more than a couple times lately that this mentality does exist over there.

Plus, if it turns out he DOES decline a new contract and leaves the WWE, it means I have to read this exact same thread all over again in (x) weeks. Better that everyone just prepares their Opinion now and actually POSTS it when it happens. If it doesn't happen...well, you can just save it for the next darling, darling.

They said both. "Chris Benoit's contract is also expiring in three weeks and word has it he was also given a lowball offer." - today's Observer.

Ironically, lowballing some of these top guys and having them go to TNA could, in the long run, be a tremendous boost to the WWE's business, simply because, although they don't seem to realize it, having viable competition would HELP. Hence the much higher ratings during the Monday Night Wars.

One of the big problems for WWE right now is that it's hard to get fresh main event matchups. Being able to bring over TNA stars who actually mean something would be a big help. Sure, TNA would at that point be able to do the same things, but the important thing isn't to compete with TNA, but to compete with all the other entertainment options out there. Again, that's why it worked during the Monday Night Wars....

The speculation of Benoit in TNA seems like a long shot right now because, as Eddie said, if he were to walk he would have a veritable bounty waiting for him if he were to return to Japan. Plus, Japan's just more his style.

Concerning LOP: if I could find a great wrestling newsboard that works well on my WAP enabled cellphone, then I'll probably swith to that. LOP is decent, but they're pretty pathetic when it comes to some things. Example: sending news to them is a redundant waste of time, because they never respond or put stuff up. I tried to tell them about the WWE Homecoming schedule (for TSN in Canada) and they never put it up, and they were a week and a half late in posting the news for the Crusher's death, when I got it as a BREAKING NEWS notice by W365 in my email.

Now, concerning Benoit...if TNA tapes in Florida, doesn't tour, and Benoit is in Atlanta...and seeing as though many talent live in Florida, maybe heading to TNA is a logical step. He is married and has a kid, right?

Although, I'd keep them away from Team Canada, except maybe Jericho. The nWo-esque angle sounds like a decent idea, especially if you add Team 3D to the mix.

Didn'they tease an angle similar to that not too long ago? When all those people got cut?
Jarret was going around saying "they're coming and going to take all our jobs" then it was forgotten, and everyone who came ended up siding with Jarret except for team 3D.

Yeah, they haven't mentioned it recently -- but no one from "Black Wednesday" (as they call it) has shown up at all yet. When (and if) they do start coming in, they could easily start it up again.

Jarrett isn't a booker. Do you follow TNA at all? D'Amore and Tenay are the bookers and are solely responsible for the matches and storylines being booked for the past 8 or so months.

If you followed TNA at all you'd probably think Jarrett had some significant input ... which he does. He's a minority owner, not that that means he calls all the shots, but he's got some, uh, stroke. Plus guys lower on the creative totem poll like Jeremy Borash and Dutch Mantel are still loyal to Jeff.

I hope he goes, along with Jericho and Christian, just so it lights a fire under the WWE's ass to start putting a decent product out there. VKM always steps up to the playte when another dog enters his yard. Having TNT put together a roster people will want to tune into will jsut mean the WWE will try harder to keep their viewers, somethign they have not had to do for a long time.

I'll chiime in with my theory that WCW wasn't really in trouble until they let Benoit and Eddy go. If WWE truly hasn't learned anything from history, they'll let Benoit go.

Uh yes they were. WCW lost millions in '99 with Benoit and Eddy on the roster. Did the quality of the shows suffer greatly after they left? Yes, but the damage was long done before the bolted.

It's absurd. Benoit's still the guy you can go to if you want a main-event match that leaves the fans on their feet and draw a standing ovation. Yeah, if he lets TNA cherry-pick him along with Christian, it will instantly legitimize them. And it'll make it easier for them to pick up other talents, as well. All those guys who may have stayed away from them because the WWE said to may end up having second thoughts.

The only problem I have with TNA just snatching up all the ex-WWE guys they can find is that it might actually hurt their legitimacy with wrestling fans new to the franchise. I remember when I first heard about TNA, and I heard that one of the top guys was Ron "The Truth" Killings. The last time I had seen this guy, he was "K Kwik" in WWE, and his claim to fame was being Road Dogg's little buddy. Same with seeing Jeff Hardy and Raven (even Rhino, now) in the title hunt; they were jobbers and tag team wrestlers in the WWE, and that's how new viewers will remember them.

Christian would be a similar situation. Everyone seems to want TNA to sign Christian and push him to the moon, and I think that would just make them look more bush league. A guy who was a continual also-ran in World and US title matches is now one of the top guys? I agree that he has the tools, but the casual fan that TNA needs to interest in their product will probably not.

I agree that Benoit is a much different story, as he still has a lot of credibility with WWE fans. I just think that signing ex-WWE guys should not be the way TNA spends their money. They need to be signing new, unique wrestlers -- guys like AJ Styles, Monty Brown, Samoa Joe -- that will give them a personality of their own.

That really should read "If one followed TNA at all, they'd probably think ..." Pronoun inconsistency notwithstanding, the way I wrote it makes it sounds like I was pointing an accusatory finger of condemnation, which is not how I meant it.

It's an interesting topic. Their departure was the big turning-further point in between the turning point of beating Goldberg/fingerpoke and the turning-furthest point of RuBisch cubed era irrepairably destroying the fabric of ... everything.

Obviously there was a ton of serious damage done in 1999, but the big thing about Benoit et al leaving is that is the affect it had on the one thing they still and had always had going for them, the quality of their roster and their (largely hypothetical by that point) ability to put on really strong wrestling shows.

Instead, it put WWF in a position to, for basically the first time ever, carry a roster that could put on great top-to-bottom PPVs, which was a huge subtraction by addition since WWF all of a sudden had literally everything going for it and WCW no longer had anything. To bring that into modern relevance, a big part of WWE's slide has been their own PPV quality declining back down from great (2001) to good (2002) to hit and miss (2003) to mostly miss (2004) to mostly bad (2005).

Plus instead of having Benoit and Eddie as the untapped future options to be top stars if they ever got a chance, by the time WCW finally realized they had to turn midcarders into top acts, their best remaining options were Booker T and Billy Kidman, which with all due respect to the deserving them is a dropoff from Benoit and Guerrero.

Still, the underlying, or probably overlying, point is that even if Benoit and Guerrero were in the company in spring 2000, the booking was going to be so awful that it's unlikely that their presence could've made too much of a difference. But I guess it would've been better to still have their potential ... potential there than to not.

I see your point, especially as it would apply to bringing in the likes of Charlie Haas, Shannon Moore, Kidman, Akio, etc. all at once and pushing them as would-be stars, because those guys, while really talented, all have the stink of WWE loser jobber all over them. But Christian would be mostly immune or above that, I think, in that he's a guy who people "know" -- even if they don't understand everything behind it -- is really great and was being underutilized. Kind of like Chris Jericho leaving WCW for the WWF, to bring this post FOOL CIRCLE. Jericho debuting in WWF didn't make people go "what, the guy who lost to Bobby Duncum? as if," they were like "oh man, the guy who's awesome? I'm happy."

I'd agree that TNA would probably be best served by not putting the belt on every WWE cast-off as soon as he shows up. Especially if they're just going to give it back to Jarrett two weeks later. Not withstanding, I'm looking foreward to Christian showing up there just because TNA might give him the opportunity to be awesome when the WWE was trying as hard as possible to keep him from that. I don't care if Christian is ever TNA champion, I just want him to have tv time for promos, and maybe win a match or two.
