I've missed a couple of local elections along the way (which in Chicago are basically irrelevant anyhow), but I've never missed any actual, you know, contested elections where there are two real candidates running. I say this because one year (1995 I believe) the GOP candidate against Richard Daley was a professional clown. Not in the "politicans are clowns" way, but a real big shoes and red nose honk honk clown.

I always vote, and since in the last election there were no good candidates for President, I looked up the State of Illinois' policy on write in votes and with the greatest of accuracy cast my ballot for

Homer Simpson.

I tried to vote write-in in the last election, but when I went in I learned that in order to cast a write-in vote a candidate, that candidate first has to declare themselves by filing a form in that state. States that have electronic voting (like Florida, where I was) won't let you vote for any write-in candidate unless there is a write-in candidate on file in the state.

I've voted in almost every election I've been eligible to vote in since I turned 18 in 2000, though I think I missed one because I didn't realize it was Election Day. I vote in as many primaries as I can, too.

I think I missed one election somewhere along the way while I was out of province, but apart from that, I've voted in every election since I've been eligible. However, I'm not opposed to wasting my vote if it is an issue where I don't support any of the candidates or don't know enough to make an informed decision. At work, about a year ago, we got a ballot to vote on a new union treasurer. I'd never heard of any of the candidates and there was no place to find out where they stood on the issues (or, indeed, what the issues even were), so I did the only thing my conscience would allow me to do - I voted for Gene Snitsky. He didn't win. It wasn't my fault.

I vote on the even-numbered years. On the odd-numbered years, I vote if there is a particular issue I care about.
