Joey Styles spotted backstage at Taboo Tuesday
Nov. 1, 2005

Joey Styles, the voice of ECW, arrived at 1:45 p.m. ET to San Diego's IpayOne Center at the Sports Arena via limousine.

Styles was immediately taken behind closed doors, but agreed to do an interview WWE.com as soon as his meeting with WWE officials is over.

Do we have a new third announcer now for Raw or is this just wwe.com just messing with us again?

edit: If he is brought in, I want Joel Gertner with him. Come on Vince, he's the only announcer out there thats willing to work for minimum wage!

Not sure if

a) WWE wants Styles as an announcer, as he has powerful enemies in the company, or

b) Styles would agree to do it (he's turned down the offer in the past).

But, boy, am I hoping that's the case. If JR is truly not coming back, then Styles would be a great addition to the painful team of Coach & Lawler.

Oh my God!

In the list of people who could possibly replace JR successfully, Joey Styles is the only name on it.

Boy, do I hope something really good comes of this.

Do y'all really want to hear Styles slow down his delivery for the WWE pace or hear him yell OMIGOD for the Ego Trip?

Well, this could be a one time thing. I mean, Coach is wrestling tonight, so he can't do the commentary. The only other option is Grisham, and since you have voting results to announce, you may want Grish backstage to get the wrestlers' reactions or somesuch. So maybe Joey is there to fill in for tonight alone.

Big Dave (Meltzer, not Batista) has spoken:

Joey Styles was flown out of nowhere to San Diego to meet with Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn today about taking over as the lead announcer on Raw, and he may debut on tonight's PPV. This is an amazing about-face, because just a few days ago the office feeling on Styles was that they wanted nothing to do with him.

The new feeling is they have to drop the Jim Ross storyline because they realized they have no way out of it. Jim Ross' job is not on the line in tonight's match with Batista vs. Coachman. The feeling is the company needs to move on from Ross, that Coachman simply can't handle the job after his performance last night nor is the idea of a heel play-by-play guy, a few days ago touted as a new novel approach to TV, one that can work long-term. Styles is now believed by the company to be the only person that fans may accept in the Ross chair without a significant backlash.

Wow. Styles gets the announcing job. They're dropping the shitty Ross angle. You'd think the company has gained some sense. Then you remember all they did to get to this point.

C'mon Zed, send in a tape! You've already got the IWC behind you! :-)

Anyway, I've been hoping for Joey to get a shot at the WWE for some time, partially because JR would at least use the old bowling shoe reference when it situation warranted it and given the proper amount of slack, Joey would be able to maintain some of that same kind of credibility with the crowd. Do I honestly think he'll get that slack if he is hired? Not a chance.

Joey has spoken:

Earlier today, former ECW announcer Joey Styles was spotted backstage at Taboo Tuesday.

WWE.com: Why are you here and who invited you?
Joey Styles: I was invited by Kevin Dunn (Executive Vice President of WWE Television Production). Because Jonathan Coachman will be getting his head kicked in during his match tonight, there was an opening at the announce table, so I was brought in for the night to do play-by-play. Being a huge Internet wrestling fan, I couldnt think of anything that would be more fun than Taboo Tuesday the interactive pay-per-view. I think its a great idea to have fans pick the stipulations for the matches. Im a little surprised the fans didnt get to choose an announcer for Taboo Tuesday, but I like to think that if fans did get to choose, they would have chosen me.

WWE.com: What do you think lead WWE to calling you?
Styles: Im sure the decision to call me was made a few seconds after WWEs original choice realized he didnt know enough about professional wrestling to fill the shoes of Jim Ross, even for one night.

WWE.com: At this point, do you know if this is another one night stand for you? Or is this a permanent move for you into the RAW announce booth?
Styles: As far as I know, this is another one night stand, which is funny because I was never the most successful single person in the world. The only pickup line that ever worked for me was Will you marry me? So Ive now had two one night stands in one calendar year, which is probably more than I had in my entire single life.

WWE.com: At this point, has WWE told you anything about your future past Taboo Tuesday?
Styles: First of all, I want to say that I think Jim Ross was the greatest play-by-play man there has ever been in professional wrestling. I dont think anybody could fill his shoes, his hat or his headset. But Id like to think if somebody can, it would be me. It would be an honor. As far as I know, though, I was brought in for one evening because Coach cannot wrestle and do play-by-play at the same time, and some would argue that he cant do either. So Im just here for the one night. Ill be doing play-by-play tonight. Then Ill be on a plane, going back to my anonymous career in advertising sales in Atlanta. While Im here, though, Ill be sure to check out catering. The cheese plate was exquisite in New York at One Night Stand. I cant wait to see what it looks like here in California.

WWE.com: What will it be like working with Jerry Lawler?
Styles: I have not seen The King since ECW Hardcore Heaven when he battled Tommy Dreamer. Ive never had the opportunity to work with him in the broadcast booth. Im looking forward to it because hes a lot of fun.

WWE.com: If you had to pick a broadcast partner, who would be your dream color man?
Styles: I would rather slide over and do color and sit beside Jim Ross. Hes the best theres ever been. Seniority means something in this business and I would be honored to sit next to good ol Jim Ross.

WWE.com: Do you have any thoughts on the way that J.R. was let go?
Styles: I think it took great restraint on his part not to take a swing at the McMahons. Ive got somewhat of an undeserved reputation of being a loose cannon, which is usually reserved for wrestlers. Ive been put in some compromising positions. Ive probably been beat up and bounced around as much as any other play-by-play man, but to take that much abuse by three members of that family after everything that has happened to him over the years, Im surprised he didnt say to hell with my job and start swinging.

WWE.com: What have you been up to since One Night Stand?
Styles: About a year-and-a-half ago, I moved from my hometown in Stamford, Conn., coincidentally enough, and took a job with an advertising agency in Atlanta. Most people dont realize that ECW wasnt a full-time job for me. It looks like it is because youre on TV once a week, but a lot of it was post-produced out of a studio in New York. So I always had a full-time job in advertising sales. When ECW ceased operations and I was unable to come to terms with WWE, I went back to my career.

So basically, Im under contract now to WWE as the ECW announcer and Im available at the companys convenience. When they need me, they take the hammer and break the glass box that says in case of an emergency, and you need an announcer, break glass.

I sure hope it isn't a one night stand. I can't go from Joey Styles back to fucking COACH.

Oh, and:

I was brought in for one evening because Coach cannot wrestle and do play-by-play at the same time, and some would argue that he cant do either.

Best. Line. EVER~!

While I get your point, Cubs, it's kinda hard to argue with the truth. If J.R. coming back was never an option, first choice with a bullet was always Styles.

What the hell?!? So the WWE pulled the fire alarm in a panic because things weren't going as planned. Understandable...yet a very funny analogy by Styles. At one point in time he wouldn't piss on the WWE if they were on fire from some of my past understandings about him.

Jesus Joey, could you swing from JRs nuts any harder?

Oh, and every time I see "JR was the best play by play announcer ever" I want to slap people.

How long would Styles be able to walk that company line? I guess that depends on how big the deal is.

I always thought Ross was ok, but the last few years he's sucked and become a parody of himself. Im glad they removed him. And as far as the greatest announcer in wrestling (not color commentary) I think Gorrilla Monsoon is deserved of that title.

Not hardly, but it's close enough that I wouldn't be made to want to slap people who said otherwise.

Gorilla Monsoon is the "best PBP announcer of my childhood memories of watching wrestling," but he's far from the best, or even a good, announcer. In other words, he was great at having chemistry with Bobby Heenan, but terrible at calling wrestling.

I understand that people romanticize the past, but JR, for all his mistakes, was a FAR more entertaining announcer than the monotone Solie. Yeah, Solie called it like a legit sport, but JR called wrestling like opera, which is what it is.

A large part of it is likely who the voice of wrestling was when you were growing up, and the thing about both of them is how much they transcended their job as mere guy who calls the matches to become reverential figures and TV stars in their own right. But that being said, I agree 100% with you.
