I would love to purchase the Wrestlemania Anthology DVD set but for $195.99 at Amazon.com, I don't know if I should for these reasons:

1. Jesse Ventura Commentary Edited Out? (WM1-WM6)
2. The phrase "WWF" edited along with that
particular frame being edited as well.
3. WWF Blurring (Attitude Era WM 14-18). Please WWE
work out a deal with the World Wildlife Fund so
this collection can be censor free.

I'm sorry but I just can't stand the blurring. This is because it's a major distraction and it takes away from the fun of the matches. Also, the concept of Jesse Ventura's voice being edited out is just ridiculous. I will not purchase this product if these things are in the wrestlemania set. WWE needs to compromise with the World Wildlife Fund so they will be able to show the matches "as is." Also, pay for Jesse Ventura's royalities fee. Otherwise, I'm happy with my WWF Coliseum Home Video Wrestlemania Set on VHS.

Didn't WWF Home Video release Wrestlemania 1-15 on VHS around the late '90's early '00's? Those are totally unedited as far as I recall.

I really don't understand. Why can't they work out a deal with Jesse Ventura to use his audio commentary for wrestling matches?

Another concern is the overflowing illogic of buying an "anthology" of an ongoing series. What is the point of buying it when there's a new one every year?

I would guess that WWE worked out a deal with Jesse Ventura. When they need to, WWE can come to an agreement to use Ventura's voice, and I can't imagine WWE releasing the first 6 WrestleManias with Gorilla Monsoon talking to himself for 3.5 hours.

As for the WWF name and Attitude logo: I wouldn't expect an agreement with World Wildlife Fund, which means WWF editing and blurring.

That's funny 'cause this morning on the radio they were talking about a new "Rocky" movie being made and a caller was complaining that his "Rocky" DVD anthology set would now be obsolete.

I agree with it being quite sad if they did have Gorilla talking to himself for hour upon hours. I watched the WM6 match Hogan vs. Warrior off the Warrior DVD and it was quite boring with Gorilla talking to himself the whole time. They even cut out Gorilla's lines if they were directed at Jesse in anyway so 75% of the match was silent.

Could be worse though because at one point in the Warrior DVD they dubbed Jessie over with Dusty Rhodes pretending he was doing commentary with Gorilla. It was very weird and terrible at the same time.

So what, they should never release any Wrestlemanias on DVD until they stop doing Wrestlemanias?

WWE is really only banned from using the WWF initials and logos in Europe. I wonder how hard it would be to make unedited Region One DVDs?

If they made a deal, it's rather recent (and possibly just for the Mania set), because WrestleMania VI Hogan-Warrior is on the Warrior DVD, and it's just Gorilla's commentary.

Oddly enough, on the WMX8 set, with Hogan-Warrior as an extra, from three years ago, both Monsoon and Ventura are on commentary.

I'm just making guesses and assumptions, but they probably edited Jesse out of the Warrior DVD just to avoid having to pay him for only one match. I don't think they have to make a deal with him, I'd imagine they already know what they have to pay him. It's just a question of whether or not they want to. It's one thing to take him out of one of the extras on a Warrior DVD, but editing Jesse out of an entire WrestleMania would throw off the whole show, would probably be more difficult, would get them lots of complaints, etc., so I'd be pretty surprised if he wasn't in there.

Almost surely there will be blurring on the attitude logos and mutes of "WWF", though. And there could be an issue with certain music... like on the Undertaker DVDs they put out a few months ago, they edited over Rollin' with some generic song for his match at X7. But maybe for something like this they'd be more willing to pay the licensing fees, assuming that's the problem.

Are you referring to the Royal Rumble '90 segment? I can't remember off-hand, but I know that Gorilla called some events with Superstar Billy Graham at points, or some other guy. They played around with the announce teams from time to time. The wierdness may just be the lack of chemistry from the announce team. Just a guess.

I was considering buying some of these WrestleMania DVDs, but I find the packaging to be screwy. I only REALLY want 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (yes, 9), and 10, but I don't want to get the different DVD sets just to get them. And I think the value of the DVDs is considerably less with the blurry logos and WW(F) instances.

Worse yet, by releasing these DVDs, it's essentially Vince showing his grapefruits to the WWF and saying "I don't NEED to use WWF ever again". I would say that, due to the investment of releasing and compiling these DVDs, Vince isn't going to contact the World Wildlife Fund and we'll never see a special agreement for less restricted archival usage. This version will probably stay the officially released archived way for all future releases.

EDIT: Edited for a (slightly) more coherent statement in light of more accurate info.

I asked my buddy who that other voice was when we watched the Warrior DVD, he recognized it right away as Billy Graham (who was terrible, BTW).

What exactly leads you to believe that was ever a possibility? The Fund didn't want Vince to pay THEM to use the acronym; they wanted them to STOP using it altogether.

(The following comments are not meant to be directed to SKLOK specifically)

I really don't see how people can still whine about this because it's not that difficult to comprehend - WWE screwed up when they signed the agreement in the first place; WWE compounded matters by screwing up AGAIN when they violated the agreement. WWF won THREE YEARS AGO. PLEASE LET'S SHUT UP AND MOVE ON

Honestly, you can threaten to withhold as much business as you like, but since that's NOT going to change what's happened, I'd really rather we not rehash this issue YET AGAIN on this board.

If you are REALLY REALLY desperate for WrestleMania as it was, you're going to have to find a way to make your own copy. Obviously, this is easier if you taped it when it originally aired. If you haven't, I'm not going to go into detail about the ways videos are often made available to collectors, but if you have any brains at all you'll figure something out. Hint: put some of that energy you're using to whine to use

Actually I coulda swore it was the Summerslam 88 segment where Warrior beat Honkey for the IC championship. And it sounded just like Dusty.

Regarding the Warrior DVD (to settle the debate), Superstar Graham did do commentary for SummerSlam 88, because Jesse Ventura refereed the main event.

Um, no. But they shouldn't call it an "anthology", which implies a complete history. At least in this context, I've never heard of releasing an ongoing series and calling it an "anthology". Seasons of T.V. series DVD releases are not billed this way, but you can get a Beatles' or a Judy Garland or an Elvis anthology, which are all complete. I am objecting on the basis of semantics, but words are important.

And I know I wouldn't buy anything that costs two hundred dollars and will be made incomplete in a year.

Actually, the two sound eerily similar. It's only when Superstar drops in a line about pumping iron or getting in shape that you realize it CAN'T be Dusty.

First, it is complete, at least until Wrestlemania 22. So I wouldn't call it false advertising if they were to call this set "complete," because they need to basically say "This isn't just highlights; this is all of 'em."

Second, the word "anthology" only suggests a collection, not a complete collection. Maybe anthologies of the Beatles, Elvis, and Judy Garland are complete, but that's not because they're anthologies--it's because the Beatles disbanded and Elvis and Garland are dead. When they released the WWE Anthology album, did you expect it to contain every WWE entrance theme in the history of time?

There simply is no precise term WWE can use for this set that succinctly explains that the set contains everything up to this point--at least not one that hasn't been used on at least one complete set.

Which comes back to my question, more or less. If you won't buy the Anthology DVDs because they're incomplete, then you're essentially saying you won't collect the Wrestlemania series until you're confident that there won't be any more Wrestlemanias. You can pick some of them individually, but so many of them are out of print that the Anthology is the only way to go.

Well, to each his own.

Dunno bout the only way to go, though. I only liked III, IV, V. VIII's okay. X's good. Anything I want after that I already have, but most pretty much blew, except X7, which was clearly the best one ever.

Now, if there was commentary about, say, who was going to main event the shows, then you'd have me interested. Imagine Savage and Hogan's DVD commentary for Mania V. That's earnin' the cash. A creative reassessment of what went into planning the matches/feuds. That'd be worth it.

Actually, Silver Vision are releasing double DVDs of classic WWF events called Tagged Classics in the UK. I picked up Royal Rumble '89 & '90, Summerslam '92 & '93 and Survivor Series '89 & '90. All of them make mention of the WWF and in the case of RR '89 and SurSer '89, Jesse Ventura is clearly seen and heard. He even utters the verboten initials. We'll see what happens when they get to the scratch logo era, though.
