RealGM and Screamin' A says Allan Houston is officially calling it quits today.

Well, I really don't have much to say here expect that you can't say this wasn't expected. His knees are completely shot. It wasn't his fault for getting that criminal contract. His career year in 2000 and Scott Layden's stupidity attributed to that.

Press conference happens in about an hour.

What does this do for CAP purposes for the Knicks? Can they trade the contract of a retiring player?

I'm not sure if they can, but I bet'cha they're pissed that Houston didn't make this decision earlier, when they had the opportunity to waive him and save on luxury tax.

Even then, though, it wouldn't have affected the team's cap number. And doesn't he have two more years left on his contract? I can't imagine any team that would be willing to trade something for his contract; what would it accomplish?

Maybe next year, the same thing as Terrell Brandon's in that four-way swap? He was never going to play for whoever he went to, but it's a contract that they can take in return for a player they don't want, and that contract would be off the books next season.

Actually, the rumor that he was going to retire came out while they could still cut him. Someone posted in that thread this article.
