I'm doing a scientifical survey over at DVDVR and I would like the Ws input:

When you get a fountain drink, what do you call a drink where you put a little of each flavor in the cup?

Suicide. Back when Slush Puppies were our thang, a squirt of each flavor was a Suicide Slush.

I heard it first called a "gravedigger". That was fifteen years ago, and it hadn't come up again until now.

I've only heard swamp water and "what the hell is wrong with you, dood?"

Maybe it's a regional thing... perhaps there is a corrolation between the name and if it is a soda or pop place?

Swamp water. Though I hadn't even heard it called that until college.

We called it a Suicide, my brother and I, while we were growing up.

My mom, on the other hand, reffered to it as (Now imagine sitting in a car's backseat with your mom in the drivers seat, and you are at a drive-thru window...) "What do you want to drink, and you're not getting that shit you usually order that embarrasses me in front of the waitress."

I've at least heard Swamp Water. But I don't think I've ever called it that.

For the life of me, I can't seem to recall if it had a special name, but I did it all the time when I was in 4th and 5th grade.

Suicide. My little cousin taught me about years ago at a Taco Bell, and I still do it every time I go to a Taco Bell.

And Cerebus: LOL, I have had many a moment like that.

In the Maritimes it's definitely called swamp water. It was also ordered fairly frequently when I lived there up until 1995. By frequently I mean at least once per shift.

I have never heard it ordered in Quebec, or Ontario sadly.

I've never heard it called either, but I didn't know there was a proper name for it.

My friends and I usually called it a Royal Flush or Cocktail.

It's definately a nationwide thing. From the answers on the DVDVR board and answers here, it's pretty much a "suicide" in America and "swamp water" in Canada. My fave thing is that it actually picks back up as a "suicide" when you get to Alaska. And the "swamp water" pockets in the US are in two places so far: Rhode Island and San Francisco. The rest of California is "suicide".

It's really cool becaquse I figured everybody had a different name for it in every neighborhood. It's weird that it's so pervasive.

Wait... you mean people actually order it? I thought that was something that was done strictly at a self serve fountain. I mean a mix of sprite and lemonaid, or orange and coke is one thing to order, but... Really? That just seems like a good way to make someone screw with your food and/or drink.

Yep, it was a "suicide" at the little league park outside Modesto, CA.

(This is probably a One Question... thread, by the way, but I know you live in only two forums here. ;-) )

I'm a big fan of JUST root beer and orange, by the way, but I "grew" out of all of them when I stopped getting fountain drinks... and now, only open one can at a time.

Here in Saskatchewan, I've always heard of it as Swamp Water. But we also wear "bunny hugs"* here, so what the hell do we know?

*you may know these items as "hoodies"

I had never heard either term before in my life...when I saw the thread title I had NO IDEA what it was about.

The next day, one of my students came into class and said the coffee she was drinking was "suicide". Which led some of the other kids to think she had soda in her coffee cup, but it was just a mix of different flavored coffees.

So "suicide" is the term here in NJ. The things I learn on this board...
