Anyone catch any of the hearings? I watched Sens. Schumer and Graham and caught soundbites from a few of the other Senators. Of course the Republicans (except for Specter) gave him softballs to make him look good while the Dems wanted him to swear a loyalty oath to Roe v Wade and somehow managed to slip quite a few mentions of Katrina in there which was odd to say the least. I don't see how SCOTUS justices are responsible for curing the country's socioeconomic ills, but I'm sure I'm just missing it.

Roberts is going to be confirmed easily so that's not really an issue. The Dems would be foolish to fight this one hard, and I don't think that they will. I could see Roberts getting between 70 and 75 votes. He should get a near unanimous confirmation considering Ginsburg and Breyer (and to be fair Scalia) were all around 95+ votes I believe. I think that the O'Connor nomination is going to be a bit more contentious than this one, to say the least.

Edit: Breyer got "only" 87 votes. The other two were confirmed unanimously.

Senator Kohl needs a civics lesson badly.
He asked a question that went something like this...
Due to the large disparities of wealth that exist in our society, the less fortunate people of NO could not escape Hurricane Katrina and were left to fend for themselves. If you were nominated SC Justice, what would you do to try to correct these social injustice?

And I don't know what the hell Sen. Feinstein is talking about. She jumped from backalley abortions to accusing Roberts of being against women in the workplace, but when he tried to respond she quickly said she didn't want to spend anymore time on it.

Daily Show had a hilarious bit about Tom Coburn being caught on the air doing a crossword during the hearing. Then, they mocked Coburn's tearful breakdown about the "hateful partisanship" in the government contrasted to Coburn's hateful past comments about homosexuals and abortion doctors.

Not one of these senators looked like anything but a moron. Nice job, America. "But BB, aren't Canada's senators just the PM's appointed cronies?" Oh, shut up.

Does anyone else remember the Bork hearings?
The chairman was Joe Biden, fresh off having
to drop out of the Democratic Primary after
it was proved that he had stolen his speeches
from the Kennedys and Briton Neil Kinnock.

Biden spent most of his time attacking Bork
while reading from 3 by 5 cards handed to him
by staffers. Rather than quote law, Biden
would talk about the way he felt things should
be when arguing against Bork's decisions.

I don't know if Bork was a good person or if
he would have been good for the country, but
he was a hell of a lot smarter and a hell of
lot more honest than Joe Biden. It's a sad
commentary on voters that Biden still serves.

Supposedly he might be running for President again though, so it could be all the voters. And, to be fair, my state in '06 will have Democratic and Republican primaries with candidates so despicable that I'd actually vote for Ted Kennedy's kid before I voted for any of the 4. And, do you think Ted Kennedy's staff stressed to him 'Don't bring up New Orleans drowning victims. For the love of God, don't mention the word drowning.'

Boston likes to think of itself as the true seat of
American patriotism, enlightenment, and culture. It
was, locals will quickly recall, the biggest city in
America when New York City was still an outpost.

The Kennedy family plays into that misguided sense of
importance and nostalgia by serving as the embodiment
of the American aristocracy, the patriotic, cultured,
and enlightened leaders who set Boston above the rest.

Unfortunately the most significant living Kennedy is
Ted, the embodiment of the greed, lust, and vanity
that often plague the less talented children of rich
families. But heck, he's the only royalty they've got.
