I've been having a couple of problems with my SpyBot: Search & Destroy lately. First, whenever I run a check, it comes back with "Error during check! Zwax (Ungultiger Datentyp fur ")" (both of the lowercase u's are actually umlauts).

Secondly, it says that it cannot delete certain viruses (usually AbetterInternet and AbetterInternet.Aurora, which are evil pop-up causing bastards) unless I restart. And then they come back anyway. What should I do?

Do you have Ad Aware (download.com)? It's just like Spybot S&D but sometimes it seems to catch different things so perhaps it could delete the files you're having trouble with when you use Spybot. If not, it's still handy to have.

Ad Aware's not doing anything with them.

If I'm not mistaken, your Aurora stuff gets reinstalled as soon as you reboot. It's hiding in the system restore or something I turned off system restore and finally got rid of it.

Here's (service1.symantec.com) how to turn System restore off. Note the paragraph in the middle:

While this is a desirable feature, in some cases it should be temporarily turned off. For example, if the computer is infected with a virus, then it is possible that the virus could be backed up by System Restore. By default, Windows prevents System Restore from being modified by outside programs. As a result, there is the possibility that you could restore a virus-infected file, or that the on-line scanners would detect the virus in that location.

After turning it off, run your removal programs, and reboot. I'd be willing to bet that helps. Good luck!

I'd also heartily recommend Google searching whatever virus or malware that's bothering you at the moment. Most likely there are sites or threads out there that have step by step instructions for removal.

At work I usually go with Spybot, adaware and hijack this.
Each of them will get rid of parts of your problem/s.
Doing it all in safe mode is also the way to go.
If you are not sure about HJT, you are deleting stuff from your registry, as Jag said a google search will turn up some forums with VERY specific instructions to follow.
