I still laugh when I think of Hall doing Henning in the "A.D. Part V, A New Beginning" (snl.jt.org) (Hall doing Henning playing Jesus):

A really close second would be Will Forte as Zell Miller. I love how he turns redder and redder as the scene progresses. | samoflange

He's a ten foot tall beastman who showers in grain alcohol and feeds his babies shrimp scampi! He drives an ice cream truck covered in human skulls! I once saw him scissor kick Angela Lansbury! Like an alligator, he can fully digest a turtle shell!
I freakin love those skits.

Oh, and for comments' sake, I dispised Jon Lovitz on that show. I didn't care at all for anything he did. He was terribly unfunny on SNL...IMHO.

See, I really debated about adding this, but it really came down to the fact that Walken on his own is awesome, so he could make damn near any character awesome. Like the "Census Taker" sketch with Tim Meadows. That was BRILLIANT. Tim: "How many people live here?" Walken: "Oh gosh, I don't know. 80?" Tim: "80? Isn't that a bit high?" Walken: "You're right. Maybe four. I'm bad with numbers."
As for the Ferrell Goulet reference, how about his Neil Diamond? Neil: "Hey! Cool out! Just everyone cool out. COOL OUT!! [pause] This next song, you all might like. Few people know that I am fueled creatively by my massive hatred of immigrants." | Texas Kelly

As for other favorites: I consider Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase and Mike Myers as people who could be funny in almost any different type of sketch. Some (Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley) were great at certain characters, but weren't capable of doing anything with equal talent. | dwaters

Besides that, Norm McDonald's 'Bob Dole' killed. That REAL WORLD spoof was classic. The shedding of one tear floored my.
Also, I've gotta give special mention to Al Franken's Weekend Update mobile reporter when he wore the sattalite dish on his head and was dying from dehydration.
EDIT: Testing something...
