I just overheard someone say "Doug Henning", and remembered Rich Hall playing him (snl.jt.org) a bunch of times when he was part of the Billy Crystal/Martin Short/Harry Shearer cast.

I still laugh when I think of Hall doing Henning in the "A.D. Part V, A New Beginning" (snl.jt.org) (Hall doing Henning playing Jesus):

"And the people truly believed that he turned water...[pours water from one glass into another, with it appearing in the second glass purple].....into wine....Thank you! Thank you!"

Of the recent seasons, I thoroughly enjoyed Will Ferrell as Harry Caray, specifically the "Space: The Infinite Frontier" bit with Jeff Goldblum. "It's a simple question. Would you eat the moon if it was made of ribs?"

A really close second would be Will Forte as Zell Miller. I love how he turns redder and redder as the scene progresses.

Bill Brasky. Not a character played by an actor so much as a character talked about by the actors.

He's a ten foot tall beastman who showers in grain alcohol and feeds his babies shrimp scampi!
He drives an ice cream truck covered in human skulls!
I once saw him scissor kick Angela Lansbury!
Like an alligator, he can fully digest a turtle shell!

I freakin love those skits.

The Samurai. Everyone else is playing for second.

(Also, Buck Henry deserves an honorable mention for being Belushi's striaght-man in those sketches)

That's a good question. I loved Molly Shannon's work on SNL; anything she did was gold.

Tied for second is Mr. Subliminal and The Church Lady.

Oh, and for comments' sake, I dispised Jon Lovitz on that show. I didn't care at all for anything he did. He was terribly unfunny on SNL...IMHO.

I was always more partial to Irwin Mainway, but that's me.

"Look, we put a label on every bag that says, "Kid! Be careful - broken glass!" I mean, we sell a lot of products in the "Bag O'" line.. like Bag O' Glass, Bag O' Nails, Bag O' Bugs, Bag O' Vipers, Bag O' Sulfuric Acid. They're decent toys, you know what I mean?"

Very good question ... mine changes from day to day. Right now it has to be Will Ferrell's Robert Goulet ...

See, I really debated about adding this, but it really came down to the fact that Walken on his own is awesome, so he could make damn near any character awesome. Like the "Census Taker" sketch with Tim Meadows. That was BRILLIANT.
Tim: "How many people live here?"
Walken: "Oh gosh, I don't know. 80?"
Tim: "80? Isn't that a bit high?"
Walken: "You're right. Maybe four. I'm bad with numbers."

As for the Ferrell Goulet reference, how about his Neil Diamond?
Neil: "Hey! Cool out! Just everyone cool out. COOL OUT!! [pause] This next song, you all might like. Few people know that I am fueled creatively by my massive hatred of immigrants."

I can say the same thing about Will Ferrell's Alex Trebek.

"Welcome back to Celebrity Jeopardy. I thought we were done with this, but Regis Philbin, that mongel idiot, decided to do a Celebrity Millionaire, and network competition being what it is, I stand before you a broken and miserable man."

I'll join in on the Norm McDonald love. The guy was criminally underused during his time on the show...

As for other favorites: I consider Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase and Mike Myers as people who could be funny in almost any different type of sketch. Some (Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley) were great at certain characters, but weren't capable of doing anything with equal talent.

Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker (Chris Farley)
"Well La-Di-Freakin' Da! You'll be living in a van down by the river!"

I also like the duo of Wayne and Garth--great comedy chemistry.

Least favorite: The Sweeney Sisters.

That crazy old lady that was on all the meds played by Cheri OTeri. What ever happened to Cheri? She was hilarious.

Harry Carray is always gold too.

I'd have to say Eddie Murphy's 'Buckwheat' was the best and the most memorable. He even made Mary Gross watchable as 'Alfalfa'. Besides that, Norm McDonald's 'Bob Dole' killed. That REAL WORLD spoof was classic. The shedding of one tear floored my.

Also, I've gotta give special mention to Al Franken's Weekend Update mobile reporter when he wore the sattalite dish on his head and was dying from dehydration.

EDIT: Testing something...

I must be the Anti-SOK, as I'm a Lovitz mark.

- Evelyn Quince, host of "Tales of Ribaldry"
- Master Thespian
- Annoying Man
- Satan
- "Get to Know Me!"
- Girlwatcher (with Tom Hanks)

But my true favorite, all time, because it reminds me of half of my dad's family, is Phil Hartman's Gene, the anal-retentive chef/carpenter/fisherman.

Least favorite: Probably the Sensitive Naked Man

I did Master Thespian for an acting gig dealy last year...just an awesome time.

I'd have to add another vote for Matt Foley...pretty much anything Farley did worked for me.
