I hate to use other message boards to link news but I don't know where or even how to read the Meltzer dirt sheet. Anyways...apparently, for what it is worth, the FNS first edition might be delayed an hour or pre-empted totally from the report below.

***EDIT***

Also, not that I lack morals or live in a cave that doesn't get current events, please do your part and help out the people involved in our greatest natural disaster in United States history.

Here is the wrestlingobserver.com report this site is linking to.

Just getting the shows taped is going to take to extra effort; they were scheduled to run thru Louisana this week for house shows and tapings. The house shows are all canceled, and the TV tapings have been moved to Texas. (I read wrong; they made the move for the shows at the end of the month.)

If this had happened any week before this week, and they were doing the telethon on Thursday, they'd happily just give them Friday to get their two hours. UPN, nationally, has never gone three hours on weekdays and it doesn't seem like there's a strong enough relationship between UPN and WWE to do it at this point. (UPN's not going to be unfriendly with WWE because they're doing an evil UPN character, but that the WWE would do something like that probably tells us where they're at.)

Since SmackDown is not close to a PPV and they just screw around unless they're close to a PPV, it probably wouldn't mess up bookings plans to stretch what was supposed to be one major show over two weeks; a shortened one hour SmackDown could easitly fit in OJ/Benoit and JBL/Batista and probably one more, making good on enough of which was promised to keep the (surely understanding) people happy enough to hold over for Rey/Eddie and whatever else an extra week.

There's not much they can do to let the public know about any change till Monday (Heat and Velocity are already taped and unlikely to be altered), so they'll probably take the weekend to figure it out.

You'd think they'd still have to deliver two hours of show to some of those other countries that air the show, though, yeah?

All right...

Batista/JBL at The Bash [19:20] & SummerSlam [9:08]
A&H/MNM at The Bash [6:47]
Benoit/OJ at The Bash [14:23] & SummerSlam [0:24]
Eddy/Rey at JD [18:29], Bash [15:37] & SummerSlam [20:16]

There's no reason to believe, based on the last few weeks, that Benoit won't squash Jordan. There's no reason to believe that the MNM/Animal & Heidenreich match won't go fairly short given who's in the match (Animal, I'm looking at you) and the fact that tHEy probably can't go very long anyways.

The other two bouts is where the problem lies. Batista overpowered JBL at SummerSlam and probably will do the same. Eddy/Rey should by all rights go long, and be the workrate part of the show. With commercials, a one-hour clipped (no backstage stuff) domestic version of Smackdown would go about 44 minutes. 5 minutes for the Tag Titles [39 left], 10 for JBL/Batista [29 left], up to 3 for Benoit/OJ and 15 aired for Eddy/Rey (assuming they go on over a commercial break) and there's something like 11 minutes left for angles. As CRZ said, they HAVE to have something 2 hours long for the international markets...but they could probably shoot a 2 hour version and clip out everything but the bare essentials for a quickie domestic showing.

The much-ballyhooed debut of Friday Night Smackdown will probably air on Saturday, methinks. It'll be like when they pre-empt it for baseball, only on a national scale.

I think in situations like this the stations would just go to their B-Footage of the Water Skiing Squirrel or whatever other filler ("Just Shoot Me") that they air. Like when a baseball game ends early on TBS and they just plug it up with World's Deadliest Police Chases.

SD is going to be preempted in New York and Boston for baseball on Friday's through September anyway, so they'll take a hit in losing the #1 and #5 TV markets, that are traditional WWF cities. Now, does the UPN affiliate in each city pick up the fundraiser and dump a double digit rating for Red Sox vs. Yankees on 9/9?

SD had been pre-empted here in Los Angeles a couple times, I think they just moved it to Saturday afternoon or something. Cant stations just do something like that?

According to the UPN website, they're going to bump it back an hour this Friday.

Actually, that schedule seems to indicate they're cutting the show to one hour. No mention is made of them extending programming an extra hour.

I'd guess, for foriegn markets, they could come up with enough filler to make up the missing hour. Maybe some Velocity matches, video packages, and repeats of previously aired matches (if they put off Rey/Eddie a week, they could air the ladder match from SummerSlam, for example.)

They should do an hour of interviews promoing the biggest Smackdown in history the subsequent week and video packages for Rey/Eddie Saga and the Unleshing of the Animal in 2005. You can't fit all the matches w/ entrances and promo time for the title match into one hour.

Freeway makes a good point using the Bash match times, but I would've expected JBL/Dave to go significantly longer than the SummerSlam match, where they cut time on half the matches. Since nobody cares about MNM/LOD and Benoit/Orlando, they could do a really loaded single hour with two matches, which I guess accomplishes the same thing anyway. But being that they were trying to establish the new timeslot with a BANG, I would wait until I was in that timeslot proper to run my big kickoff show.

Isn't 10pm EST when the local syndication starts? In theory, I guess they could run a 2 hour show it would be up to the local networks on showing it.

Yes, 10pm is usually when my syndication is played, Smackdown is recorded off the satellite for the local stations for local replay. When Smackdown first started years ago my Fox affiliate had the rights to UPN for the first year so I'd get Smackdown at 2am Saturday night/Sunday morning. Then they dropped the UPN network.

Well, enter new local WB channel WHCP. THey picked up UPN programming so I started getting Smackdown, again after about two years of not seeing it, at 10pm after it played live. Now with UPN going to the comedy style Thrusday and WB having a Friday night line up until 10pm I'm not sure when they are going to play it. I'm hoping for Fridays at 10pm but I still haven't seen the fall scedule for the local station. I'm crossing my fingers though.

I don't know if it was a local commercial or not, but last night during Raw they hyped up a special 1 hour debut for Friday Night Smackdown consisting of the Batista/JBL bullrope match and the Eddie/Rey Cage match.

They didn't think through some of this well at all. There also appears to be a general problem with TiVo season passes for SmackDown.

Looks to me like WWE used this "opportunity" to officially rename Raw & SD (but not Velocity -- hmm) to be "WWE Monday Night Raw" & "WWE Friday Night Smackdown". My TiVo season pass for Raw tracked this fine. However, TiVo wasn't able to track the SD move. (My guess is that between the name change *and* the day/time change, Season Pass manager wasn't able to recognize that it was the same show.) So I just had to add a new season pass for "WWE Friday Night Smackdown", & delete the now-empty one for "WWE Smackdown".

I wouldn't worry about it; they posted this.

"SmackDown Board ruling: Both hours of SmackDown WILL COUNT for points this Friday night. The first hour will air on WWE.com because of a network fundraiser for Gulf Coast relief."

Sky TV here in the U.K. shows Smackdown! every Friday at 10pm our time, which is at the moment 4pm EST. It'll be interesting to see whether they continue doing so, as it would mean the U.K. getting to see the official broadcast of the show before the U.S...
