| #1 Posted on 1.9.05 1246.37 Reposted on: 1.9.12 1247.20 | Let me preface this topic by saying that compared to what's going on in Louisiana, Mississippi & Alabama, football has little relevance.
My question is, have the Saints played their last down of football in New Orleans? There has been some past disdain between owner Tom Benson & the state of Louisiana.
We know that the NFL is a business & Tom Benson is a businessman. And who knows when the Saints will be able to play in the Superdome/city of New Orleans? Will Benson see this as an opportunity to uproot his team to LA, San Antonio (where they are holding practices) or some other destination? Promote this thread! | | Battlezone

So that first game against the New York Giants could be at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Or at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Or even at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.
Yes, the Los Angeles Coliseum is among the sites suggested as a possibility for this season.

It might be out that week, but according to "The Dan Patrick Show" today, the Texans have volunteered use of Reliant Stadium to the Saints for other dates this year.
That at least comes the closest to replicating the indoor feel of the Superdome...except Houston's turf is actual real grass, and the ceiling isn't the absurd height of the Superdome.
A high school buddy of mine, RB Aaron Stecker, is still on the Saints roster...man, I hope he and his home down there will be OK. | redsoxnation

| #6 Posted on 1.9.05 1800.16 Reposted on: 1.9.12 1801.28 | This is as good an excuse as any to move the Saints to L.A. Play in San Antonio at the Alamodome this season, then move into the #2 TV market. Put St. Louis in the NFC South with the Falcons, Panthers and Bucs and move the new L.A. team into the NFC West with the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals. No Super Bowls scheduled for New Orleans, so there would be no reason to waste the money/time/material to rebuild the Superdome or a new building for the Saints. Put the money/time/material to a better use.

Not that I disagree from a business perspective, but have you considered the Sugar Bowl? Pretty big game, played there every January (until this year, maybe). | Oliver

I disagree. The NFL, in my eyes, should work at giving the New Orleans Saints a new home as close to the Superdome for this coming season. Just because they can't play there doesn't mean they should be ripped from the area and moved halfway across the country.
Football may be the least of their worries, but come on...if they've lost almost everything, spare them some Saints football...as close to home as possible. | DrewDewce

I agree, but how many people will be around to support the team? And I don't necessarily mean this season, I mean in the future. I loathe the practice of teams up and moving on people whether they support them without question every season or not (like when Behring almost ripped my heart out with the 'Hawks a number of years ago), but ultimately, the team and the league will most likely make the best decision for business, and that may be moving the team to LA.
The community could use the team to take their minds of their troubles, but unfortunately, there likely won't be much of a community there to experience it. | Oliver

I see your point, but the entire state of Lousiana hasn't been blasted off the map. The WWE moved a TV taping (?) to Biloxi, LA...so perhaps there are closer venues.
To ask as to how many people would be around to support the team is kind of a dumb question; it's not like the entire city and population are gone; I'm pretty certain taht people travel from out of town to attend their games.
I look at it like this: If the area around the Air Canada Centre in Toronto (including the Skydome and Exhibition Stadium) were to be stricken with a hurricane, I doubt that the people that own the team would move them half way across the country; instead, they'd find some place suitable in town where the games could be played while the stadiums were repaired.
I would suspect the same should happen with the Saints. Now, I've never been there, so I don't know what stadiums are in Mississippi or Louisiana, but I can't help but think that there is something available that would suit them. Something closer than Los Angeles, I hope. | StaggerLee

Any of those three would probably draw big crowds and allow people close to the city to get there in a days travel.
Although, I believe the Alamodome is probably the most suitable for NFL games. | The Thrill

Giants-Saints game moved to Meadowlands (NFL.com)
No word on other venues to hold subsequent Saints home games.
From the article:
Originally posted by that article linked above There are many reasons for this decision, including recognizing that the overwhelming priority for public and private resources in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region in the weeks ahead must be the essential needs of the public and the restoration of the area’s infrastructure.
With the support of Giants fans and others in the New Jersey/New York area, this Saints-Giants game will be presented with elements that will highlight and contribute to the national relief effort. The Saints and Giants will donate a portion of the gate proceeds from the game to Hurricane Katrina relief.

| #14 Posted on 6.9.05 1538.09 Reposted on: 6.9.12 1542.35 | I appreciate the NFL's desire to help and the Giants desire to help but I find it hard to believe that the NFL has given the Giants a 9th home game. It puts the Saints at a huge disadvantage having to travel to NY for a Monday night game and then having to travel the next week to Minnesota when they should be playing the game as close to home as possible and with as little stress as possible. This was supposed to be the Saints' home game and the Giants were supposed to be the team that traveled. There were other options available but the NFL took the largest market option and cut the Giants a break. If I were a fan of another team in the NFC East I would not be happy right now. | pieman
