The sooner WWE takes the "interim" title off of Heyman for this, the better. I'm nowhere near Louisville, but I'd dare say that the buzz around OVW has never been greater than in the time that Heyman's taken over for Cornette. It's a perfect arrangement for both Heyman & WWE: Heyman gets to be the radical and train the next generation, and Steph & Co. don't have to put up with him (but at the same time gain from his work). | The Thrill

| #5 Posted on 11.8.05 2300.31 Reposted on: 11.8.12 2301.37 | I attended the show last night. I do agree that Heyman is putting on good shows right now. I don't think they are really that much different from what was there when Cornette was there YET (emphasis on the YET there; I suspect Heyman knows it IS still OVW and if a formula works don't suddenly mess with it overnight). However, it certainly is better than the nearly pain-enducing feel of the Dreamer shows, and even some off-nights that Cornette had in the past year.
As to the final match: Cappotelli was setting himself all up for the headshot with the chair and the crutch throughout the match. In fact, he had a hard time keeping the crutches in a position so that Jeter could easily get to them when he needed them, as they kept falling over. These were metal crutches and when Jeter hit Cappotelli with one, the bottom rubber cap came flying off, exposing a rather large metal edge to the crutch as Jeter was swinging it back down on Cappotelli. I'll have to wait to see the tape on Saturday, but I suspect that had something to do with Cappotelli bleeding. In other words: the beating was a work, but the bleeding - if real - was a shoot. Why do I mention "real"? I'm still not completely convinced that Cappotelli was bleeding that much, if at all. I certainly didn't see any blood until AFTER the medics and the wrestlers grouped around Cappotelli and hid him from view for several seconds (and the cameras went dark). Now maybe the tapes will tell another story, so I may be wrong there.
Now Al, who was down with the medics for some time, finally came back up with his hand all red. He stared at it for several seconds in order for the camera to get a good shot of it. Dean, who is always concern when someone gets hurt but stays out of the way in order to let the medics do their job, managed to somehow get blood all over his hands as well and then purposefully waved them numerous times at the camera as he made some final comments for the ending of the show. Only faces came out to check on Cappotelli, and if Alexis was legit crying, I never saw it and I was only a few feet away in the stands at the time. Also, the medics ran out immediately, without delay after Cappotelli was hit; a little too fast really.
Now, relating all this to something that happened last year: Passion broke her nose in a match last year. When it occurred, they took her backstage bleeding and stopped the show for a bit. To fix her up? No, to shoot a promo of her with her broken, bleeding nose and blaming it not on the person she just had a match with, but on someone she was having a feud with. Could Matt have been a similar case - that of unintentionally getting hurt, and everyone backstage saying, let's run with Dean at the desk waving his bloody hands because it makes Jeter look even more like an animal? I wouldn't be completely surprised.
So, like I said, definitely a work. Possible with a bit of an unintentional shoot mixed in. Definitely not a shoot, however.
Keep in mind too, that Danny Davis, OVW, Johnny Jeter, etc. all have to answer to the KBWA (Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority) and there are specific regulations pertaining to intentional bloodletting in wrestling matches. There's a reason why the only time you see someone bleed is when it's an accident, even in the most hardcore of matches in OVW (you have to go back to when they were in Jeffersonville, Indiana to see that type of situation).
One moment Dan forgot to mention was when ref Chris Kay threw up in a corner of the ring, he nearly caused Brent Albright to vomit on the spot as well. Some people in the audience did follow Kay, however. Fortunately, it didn't suddenly turn into a moment from Monty Python's Meaning of Life. The cameramen did a good job of avoiding it (as, you can guess, did the wrestlers), while Kay walked back to the spot a couple more times to vomit later on. While there were a handful of people in the audience laughing at him, you've got to give him credit for sticking with the match until it was over (which, actually, was only another thirty seconds or so).
Not to pick on Dan, but he is incorrect in his statment about no after-show dark matches. While it was a norm during Cornette's run, it did not always happen. Plus, once Cornette left, there have been a few shows where there were no after-show dark matches. Furthermore, the show last night was top-heavy with before-show dark matches, letting the card end just about the same time as it normally would if there had been an after-show dark match. Again, another reason to believe it was a work.
Somewhat off-topic, but Puder needs some serious work. His punches are supposed to come off as a speed-of-lightning fury around the body and head of his opponenet, but they really come off as him half-assing it. Remember the scene in Blazing Saddles at the big studio fight in the end, where the one dancer is beating his hands against the unflinching cowboy and crying, "You brute! You brute!" That's Puder. | meaty_buys

Not that it would matter, since whatever great gimmick/character he would potentially create, the writing team would just disregard it and give us a watered down piss pour version of what they were. or, just completely ignore the past gimick and give them something out of left field. I hope Heyman just leaves when his contract expires and either joins up with Joey, TNA or his own upstart. | Mayhem

I just got caught up with the last month of OVW via TiVo today and totally agree. The biggest change I see are in the backstage vignettes feeling a little different (can't explain why yet), and quick cuts to break. I had Cornette's flow down and could hit the pause on the recorder much quicker.

The last hardcore OVW match I can recall was a brutal affair between Flash Flanigan and Trailer Park Trash back in the old studios (12/8/01 to be exact)(read my report on the show here: http://slashwrestling.com/ovw/011208.html)

and I hope the WWE realizes what they have in Heyman and promote him back to Raw.

Yep! That's the one I was thinking of. They could get away with that type of match in Indiana, but when they moved back over the river to Louisville, they had to stop that.
(Off-topic, but I sometimes miss that old studio. It was a hole in the wall in a falling-down building, but it had a certain charm about it. Ever go there, Drew?)
One of the biggest differences I've seen is that of Dean and Al going over the matches for the Six Flags shows on-camera instead of the ads that would appear 2-3 times in the show when Cornette was there. It seems they (along wiht the storylines) are trying to tie in more with the WWE connection than when Cornette was there.
BTW, went to the Six Flags show last night. Very small crowd for Chris Benoit's appearance, but the temperature was near 100 yesterday and school is starting up again as well. Good show. Jeter came out to do his match with Maria against M-N-M, and was supposed to announce a teammate to replace Matt for the match. Instead, he announced that he had better things to do and walked off; leaving a defenseless Maria against M-N-M. They were about to attack her when Seth Skyfire and Tommy Dreamer (who seems to be Heyman's catch-all wrestler when needed) came out to do the match with Maria. M-N-M lost with Maria getting the pin.
The Ken Anderson/Dan Puder vs. Brent Albright/Chris Benoit match went well. They at least tried to give Puder something more to do than a couple of kicks and punches; still, it's Anderson carrying the ball most of the time for the team there. Puder had his own high-gloss trading card that was handed out before the show, and some four-color silkscreened posters for the event that were up at Davis Arena on Wednesday. So he's flanting the money behind him, which is where I think they're taking his character storyline-wise. Anyway, Benoit hit the crossface on Anderson while Albright hit the crowbar on Puder for a tap-out win.
Good show, really.

No, I never made it over there. The best part was the pole (load-bearing pole, not stripper pole) at one corner of the ring. That Flash/Trash match was neat because of how they used the quirky dimensions of the building and incorporated them into the match. TPT's best match in my opinion.

| #12 Posted on 13.8.05 2313.02 Reposted on: 13.8.12 2313.17 | Just watched the show. If you didn't know it beforehand, you never would have guessed that Kay had thrown up in the corner of the ring.
My memory was faulty about the crutch, however. Jeter kicked it away from Matt and it did snap, but he never used it on Matt. Instead, Jeter swung the chair at Brent first, than Matt - both on the heads. Then he beat Matt with the flat of the seat on Matt's back and chest a few times before being dragged off by a bunch of faces and refs. It is only after Matt had a group of people around him that he "suddenly" began bleeding from the head (even though he took the same chair shot as Brent and had a kerchief for protection as well). So definitely a work, but nicely done.
I think the funniest thing about the old Davis Arena was how tiny the whole thing was. That, and they had only one cameraman for filming the matches. Everything else was done with stationary cameras set up in the back and on a pole aimed at Cornette and Dean in a box above the arena.
