No thread about the big, gala UFC live event last night? That doesn't bode well for Spike's decision to lose WWE & push UFC instead, does it?
Am I remembering correctly that all of the faces won? Interesting booking choice. (*ahem*)
Koscheck's improving. That was a pretty nice submission he won with. He looks really skinny at 170 though.
Stephan Bonner seems to be turning into the guy who can't just flat out win. Has nobody explained to him that it's a lot less work to win outright, rather than having to go the whole distance & get the decision?
I really wanted Cote to take out "head case boy". Lunatics are dangerous people, but I just prefer skill, technique & strategy.
Mike Swick landed all 4 of those shots good & clean & damn fast. "I've got me some quick hands." No shit.
Main Event was boring-boring. Crowd was totally right to boo. I've seen Ivan Salaverry before, & had much higher expectations. There is such a thing as too much respect for the other guy.
Anybody else watch this?

Was out on a date, so I missed it. Either way, I dont really care for 3/4 of the people who fought, so I probably would have only showed passing interest anyhow.

I was rather disgusted that Leben took the decision over Cote -- aggression is a good thing, but when aggression constantly meets a fist to the face, it isn't "winning" it's "getting pummelled". Then again, they're REALLY pushing his star, whereas Cote doesn't really lose much lustre losing a decision. C'est la vie.
Bonner's performance against pudgy-bald guy made me wonder which was more true: a) pudgy-bald guy is a solid fighter with heart, or b) Forrest Griffin is an average fighter who went to war with a mediocre fighter and took a decision.
Swick threw WILD punches, but sometimes wild is effective -- if he learns to pick his shots better, his speed will be lethal.
Quick stoppage in the Sell / Quarry fight was maddening, and briefly made me wonder if they weren't protecting Quarry's star by affording him that luxury. Then the fans started booing, and I figured if that were the case it was a pretty bad decision. In any case, Sell was anything but beat. I would like to see them rumble a second time... this time for real.
Lastly, yeah, Salaverry / Marquardt was rather boring. I would disagree that the fans were right to boo -- booing is disrespectful to the extreme, and it wasn't that this was a bad fight with bad fighters. It was an unexciting fight with two good fighters (maybe even "great fighters") who respected one another too much to risk opening up. Ah well. To me it was a draw, and didn't detract too much from the entire event.
Only thing that truly sucked? The Coq Roq commercials. Yegads. Whoever at BK thought this was a good idea should be turned into chicken feed.

I watched it, I enjoyed it, I wasn't near a computer. By the time I was, I couldn't really remember the specifics so I didn't post anything. Even now all I REALLY remember is "wow, Swick really made that guys face ripple" although reading Sobriquet's rundown, I pretty much agree with everything there...except the evaluation of COQ ROQ. BOB YOUR HEAD
Ultimately, this STILL didn't make me want to PAY for a card, but if the TV's on when the next one comes around, I'll definitely catch it. I MAY even sit through "Unleshed" ;-) after RAW tonight because the one I caught on replay Saturday just before the live show really was pretty good, if possibly unreasonably setting up my expectations of Salaverry and making me that much MORE disappointed in the main event.
EDIT: Looking at the results page at http://www.ufc.tv/events/ppv/ppv.asp, did we not get the Florian/Karalexis fight on TV? Also, since the Swick fight was listed as a "prelim" I wonder if they performed some videotape magic to insert that into the "live" show...which would be a little disingenuous, since they didn't actually say anything about that during the broadcast.

Though this is pure speculation on my part, I'm relatively sure the Swick fight was indeed pre-taped and used to pad the card in case of quick fights (Quarry and, to a lesser extent, Koscheck).
It also may have been thrown in simply because it was so damned impressive (my mild criticism of his wildness aside). The free card was first and foremost meant to build a wider fanbase as well as build new stars. Swick's fight serves both purposes. His goofy charisma is undeniable, and he showed that MMA isn't just two guys sweating on each other in the clinch.
The Florian / Karalexis fight was also a prelim, and from what I've read it was pretty good. Apparently Karalexis was winning pretty handily until one of little Kenny's vicious elbows opened him up like a can of tomato paste. Florian should drop in weight another step -- he could be a force against similarly small guys.
My biggest dissapointment is that they didn't include a fight with an established MMA superstar in order to solidify him as a mainstream star. Salaverry is popular in MMA circles but he isn't exactly A #1... a title match would have been great (though perhaps the idea is "don't give it away for free").
I'm with CRZ in that the card doesn't really motivate me to pay for the next PPV. Then again, I've only ever forked out cash for PPVs of any sort on a few occasions. It does, however, get me excited for the Unleashed shows. "The Best of UFC" is really something they should have done years ago. They stand to make more money off of those archives through commercials and endorsements on TV than they do for the rather small DVD sales, I'm sure.
As for Coq Roq, ok, it's catchy the first three times. The twentieth time in three hours, though, I begin to want to introduce the band to a meat grinder.
Having said that... I must confess i do believe I have to try these so-called Chicken Fries. Mission accomplished, Burger King. I hate you.

Guys, dont base the next PPV card on this one. Have you seen it?
Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and George St. Pierre!
All should be good fights.
Plus, guys this is not Pro Wrestling, this is a sport commissioned by the Nevada athletic commission. They have judges who don't give a hoot about who the mma world is rooting for(plus Leben doesn't have a contract)
The ref just made a horribly move when he stopped Nate's fight. He didn't have the angle to see that Sell was catching his fall.
